Been using the Sheath since I got it and honestly I’ve come around. Yeah the sides could be a little tighter but I don’t feel them getting wrapped over time. Yeah I would like a slightly larger lip for protection but I can’t get past how light, slim and grippy the case is. Really liking it right now. Editing my review now.
It really is a surprising winner.

It’s my favorite. That was a detailed and realistic review. Especially about the fit. Day to day, the fit is great and I never feel it pull away. More folks need to subscribe to Tee’s YT channel. He puts out some nice content and he’s a cool cat as well.

You know what really grinds my gears? Case review on dummy units......how in the world can you do a case review on a dummy unit where the buttons don’t even work?!

I went to Best Buy to get a case for my XS max and the only case I saw that I liked was the cheapest one in the store. Made by Insignia and has held up very well.

Top 3 isn’t easy, but I’ll give it a shot

2. Presidio Grip- if you can get it on sale, it’s an excellent case that can take a beating

I've had the CandyShell Grip in the past for the 5 and 6 and really like them, more so since I got them cheap at a discount store. I know the common complaint is that the grips come loose and detach, but since I've used them mainly on part-time "vacation" rotation duty, it hasn't been an issue for me.

Most cases seem to prioritize looks over grip, which then puts the onus on protection, but my philosophy is that: good grip = lesser probability of drops = less reliance on protection = safer phone.

Anyway, Best Buy has been putting the dark blue/black and black/black colors on "clearance" for a while. The normal clearance cut is a joke at only $4 off ($36), but when they have a weekend sale like now, it drops to $11.99. I missed the last couple, but finally ordered one for store pickup next week.

But I am curious as to whether this is one of those instances where the camera cutout isn't optimal for the XS. Not a big deal, but I'd still like to know, since the cheap blue one is model #103131-6587 and there is a full price blue is model #117124-6587 (also the one selling on Speck's own site). Obviously, something changed or was updated.

At one point, Speck was putting absurdly large camera openings so that they could be extra lazy and claim wider compatibility without having to update their designs, but they've since shied away from that practice.

Apple's little trick with the X/XS camera dimensions was a bit sneaky, but I still hate it when case makers first claim (compromised) compatibility, then come up with stealthily revised versions.

Big fan of your channel btw....I have been on the fence about this case for awhile now and have yet to pull the trigger. After seeing the hands on video, I think I may have to grab this one. The only thing I am unsure about is if I should go just the straight black or carbon.

Can anybody recommend a case that offers at least decent protection (sheath level) but has exposed buttons?

Either one is great choice. I have them both and I would be happy with either. I’m using the carbon now and leaning to it, because of the extra design—but that’s personal preference.

You guys got to me. LOL. I was totally happy with the cases in my rotation but then all these recommendations for the Sheath - could this be my perfect case? I ordered one yesterday. But seriously, that’s the very last case, I’m going to buy and this time I really mean it. :)

Do you really, really mean it? I’ve said that before to @AE14 and then bam, bought the Supcase UB. I really mean it this time, I’m done! :D

Looking forward to your thoughts about the Sheath. :)

Thanks for posting a picture! Maybe it is just me but doesn't the carbon look out of place on the back?

SCJR - you are killing me.

I will share my thoughts on the Sheath when I get it.

My current go to cases are the Apple black leather - love it but wish it covered the bottom and was just a tad slimmer. Totallee clear soft - simple thin clear case that has very clicky buttons. It’s my daily driver as I can feel almost like I’m using my phone naked but with more grip and some protection. I also have the black Tozo super thin case which is more slippery than the phone itself. Here’s hoping the Sheath will be my perfect black, thin case.

The close up pictures pick up the carbon pattern in great detail. In real life, that carbon pattern is very subtle. When I saw the pics on their website, I questioned whether I would like it. In hand, I really liked it. But—it all comes down to personal preference. :)

i got this case from ebay that look the same as my max.its like 2 bucks.soft tpu hydroplated case or something it looks nice on my gold max.

I really like the lip on the Caudabe Sheath BECAUSE it's not so huge. It's just high enough to protect the screen, but not get in the way of my swiping motions. Any bigger of a lip and it would be annoying.

.

A lip doesn't interfere with accessibility. I have the OtterBox Defender and it has a huge lip, there are zero issues with swiping or gestures

Carbon was the only version they had for the X originally, then introduced the all black.

If anyone is a dropper I wouldn’t recommend the sheath.

I had the same and its peeling apart and dont know what to get now. I hear the apple leather cases are very poor in quality, dont care much about clear cases anymore. any ideas
Peeling apart where? It's hard plastic.

I did the same thing last week. Got it Saturday and I really like it! Had a coupon code so I ordered a Veil for Max and another Sheath for my Xr. All the positive feedback really swayed me!

I never did my top 3.

For the X (and I guess XS):
1. Caudabe Sheath
2. K11 bumper

Those were my only two cases when I had my X. The K11 was protective without making the phone feel bulky at all. The Sheath had the perfect amount of grip and texture for my dry hands. Dropped the phone onto concrete a few times with the Sheath and nothing happened at all, which is impressive.

For my XS Max:
1. Evutec AER Karbon

I haven’t found anything else I like for the Max considering it’s size. The K11 made the phone feel too wide for me. The Sheath was still minimal which is great, but I felt I couldn’t get a good grip on the phone. I wasn’t confident enough to stop looking at cases. I tried the Evutec and for me it’s PERFECT, which is interesting cuz I didn’t like it with my X. It has good grip without being too grippy, and it’s still very minimal while having a good size lip on the front. Pluses are the magnets in the back for mounting that are placed to not interfere with the wireless charging.

Shoot! AT&T just canceled my $5 Apple Silicone XS case saying it’s out of stock?

Anyone receive anything from that sale?

This was driven by retailers. They could sell the same exact case for 6/7/8 series phones. There is a finite amount of space in stores, and they had zero interest in carrying the same exact case x 3.
