The thanotech bumper for the iphone X still had the stiff buttons. I still used it because the protection is really good.
I'm thinking about a silicon case this time... only because i got the pink fuchsia last year and it did not wear/age well at all... looks filthy, i know it's the patina but i just couldn't stand how it looks/looked filthy all the time! None of my silicon watch bands look bad... even my white one that i've had since close to original release. I have two lighter pink ones that look good. i assume i can take it off and clean it really good and it won't get the dirty looking patina that leather gets. i do like the feel of leather better, though (which is why i got leather and not silicon last year).
I’m tempted by this for the Max
I do like that green.... just now sure how it will wear... it's just light enough that i think it will end up like my pink looking nasty (like it's dirty).

The cat one is really cute but I don't think it will show up too good with a SG phone.. but then that may be better.. make the cat more subtle.... The skyline one that glows looks fun, too!

I ordered the nectarine colored silicone case for the XS Max. I used the red and one of the blue silicone cases for my X this past year and wanted to change it up a little colorwise. I really like the silicone cases even though they are a little pricey for what they are.

The XS-specific variant hasn't been released yet and while I've read that the camera module is ever so slightly bigger and the speaker cutouts slightly different on the XS, I'm hopeful that this case has enough tolerance (which it appears it may, to me) to accommodate the XS (if not only temporarily for day 1 protection while I get a revised case).
I like this case because it's the only one I know of now for the X/XS that has a relatively minimal profile while offering some drop protection and a clear matte finish back so I can still see my phone (for the most part) and not with a fingerprint magnet clear back.
Evolutive Labs's Rhinoshield Playproof Clear used to be perfect for me because it had that clear matte finish back, but they stopped offering that with the iPhone X and it doesn't appear to be an option for the XS.

how do they hold up as far as looking dirty or worn (the leather ones that get really nasty looking after a couple of months)
I just want a simple TPU case. Looking at Diztronic, but they also have not released anything for the XS Max yet.
Any other suggestions would be welcomed. Those Spigen Liquid Air look nice, but not a huge fan of the back. Does it have openings around the buttons, if so definite pass for me.

As far as wear they've held up really well. The only wear noticed is on the corners where they begin to get a little shiny due to rubbing but only if you look closely. Neither case looks dirty to me though I'm sure if I was to put them against a brand new case of the same color they would prob not look as vibrant.

I'll probably buy some sort of clear case. I want to show off that beautiful gold but still have protection.

That’s what I have ordered as well for my XS. For my wife’s, we ordered the Apple silicone case in lavender gray.
This is the case that I got as well from Amazon... Same case as I have been using on my X, and my 7. Interestingly... I ordered it yesterday for $11.99... I see today the price has increased to 13.99... lol. Case will be here tomorrow.

Almost always went naked for most of my iPhones. I carried my iPhone 7 for 2 years with one of these:
I actually went through 2, but the second one was sold to me for $.99 after the first broke. The second finally broke about a month ago. Overall I was pretty happy with it, although it could have been more durable.
That being said, for the price of the iPhone Xs...I think I'm going to have to hold on to it for up to 3 years to justify the price. That means taking better care of it...which means a real case.
I noticed one person mention Loopy Cases. Anyone else have experience with them or similar cases? How do they affect wireless charging? (…which will also need to get to charge my Xs, wife's Xr, & her Apple Watch.)
