That is still a small minority of iPad Air owners. Not everybody is on Reddit or MacRumors.
Hmm, considering the amount of people that actually check for backlight bleeding, or even know what it is, it actually seems like a decent amount of people have it. Most people don't bother to check. Got to look at things in proportion/scale too. If that many Macrumours/Reddit members, a small randomized group of people, have the same problem, there's probably a lot of other people who aren't on tech forums that would have it as well.

Doing the math, there could be around 30,000+ out of 2 million iPad Airs that have the issue we call “Bleeding on the Back”. This number is likely higher, as the bleed is at the exact same spot for everyone that reported it and there are people that reported that even their replacements had it. This signals that it's a systemized re-occurance and not something random. At the very minimum there are tens of thousands of iPad Airs from the first batch with this exact same screen issue.

Just got my Air 4 yesterday. No notable light bleed. True Tone off, night shift off, 100% brightness.

Edit: I know now this isn’t what y’all are looking for. Uploading a black pic today.

Here is mine. What do you all think?

Quite obvious when watching letterbox video, e.g. Apple TV+

Frustrating, as I checked my Ipad 7 and the screen is incredibly uniform. I have never had to return an Apple product, but I think this is going to be my first time. However I will not be playing screen lottery. I will wait a few months to see if they fix the issue. Given the number and consistence of the location of the problem it would appear to be a manufacturing issue. Apple QC has obviously done their cost/benefit analysis of correcting the problem and determined that their will not be enough returns to justify an immediate fix.
I have a little less than yours, and only in one spot. I don't mind it since it only shows up in photos, as long as I don't see it on letterboxes while watching a movie I don't mind the lightbleed that much.

Received an Air 4 today. But...

1. As expected, it has two areas of light bleed in the bottom right side. Not something that I can get upset about, though.

2. But it also has a cluster of dead pixels in the bottom middle.

3. And just to be a pedant: I ran Marco’s image retention test for 5 minutes at 100% brightness, and it does in fact have some retention. The chess pattern takes around 1-2 minutes to disappear completely. I remember the iPad Mini 2 used to have the same issue, but to a much more severe. Neither my Air 3 or my Mini 4 exhibits this issue. I see image retention as a sign of poor display quality.

I’ll return it and save my Christmas present for sometime in 2021. Perhaps manufacturing will have improved by then. Can’t justify switching from Air 3 to 4 for an amount equal to USD 800 here in my country.

I played around with the best buy floor model for about an hour and didnt notice any bleeding around the edges, changed it to dark mode and lowered the brightness....I was satisfied with the air, but still wondering if I should just get the pro even though Im only going to use it as a consumption device

How did you get to the numbers and what is the formula to do “the math”?

Just got a new Air 4 which arrived via China so I assume it was just produced. No light bleed. Off access color shift though, but that’s normal.

You can’t really do that, it is way too bright in the store. You need a dark room to properly be testing it.

your bound to see a small amount bleeding on any display checking it in a dark room and cranking the brightness up, unacceptable bleeding would be checked in normal room lighting with something dark being displayed ...extreme bleeding will show even with lighter colors

The Pro’s don’t have this bleed, even in a pitch black room with max brightness. A lot of Airs do.

Now whether that defect is important to you or not depends on the person.

Some seem to be wore than others but is not like some of the other iPads.

There does not seem to be many threads on Reddit and here like in the past so well may be Apple as fixed most of the problem by now.

The first iPad Air 4 I received in early November was bent straight out of the box. Didn't even bother to turn it on. Sent it back and waited a couple of weeks before re-ordering a new one. It arrived just before last weekend and of course it has the dreaded light bleed on exactly the same spot as everybody else. Since this seemed to be such a widespread issue that has been going on since launch day, I had some hope that Apple would have sorted it out by now. I guess I was wrong... Now I don't know what to do? If this is caused by the display cable, why do they not fix it? Unbelievable! Does anyone now how high (or low) the percentage is to get one that doesn't suffer from this issue?

And that's why Apple let them switch it out 4 TIMES. And if this person still doesn't like their device, they'll be able to return it.

What's incredible is that you feel the need to bash fanboys on an ... APPLE forum.

Apple will let this person get their money back if they're not satisfied. But to do this 4 times is going on a bit much. Most reasonable people won't do this.

I’d consider my self to be an Apple fan. Certainly not a Apple cult sheep though. I went through 7 iPhone 3G units due to crooked and slanted buttons, hairline cracks in the plastic, display sitting slightly proud of the bezel, etc. they needed up giving me an iPhone 3GS that was defect free except for a slanted power button. Sold it and got a used iPhone 4. Many shoddy defects were resolved in the iPhone 4. Even the original iPhone from 2007 had better build quality than the 3G/3GS. Apple prides themselves in that they are better than the rest and that their products just work. It shouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that. Build quality on iPhone 4 and later is pretty damn good. I’ve never had a cosmetic defect or slanted button in any iPhone other than the 3G/3GS.

My original 2007 iPhone, iPhone 4, 4S, 5S, 6S Plus, X, XS Max, and now iPhone 11 Pro Max had flawless build quality. Only had a Bluetooth chip failure in my 5S

Anyone know if new ones still have the bleed?

- For people that will say I can just return it, I don't live in the US with good service and return policy, and a replacement can take months.

Still present on a model I got this April
