Kinda wish they stuck with the 5.8, felt like a good option for ppl in limbo btwn small and large

I was thinking about this too, so I started making tables (the scientist in me kicked in!). The 12/12 Pro isn't much bigger than the X (attached). This convinced me to go with a 12/12 Pro -- though I'm still a bit undecided if I'll upgrade -- it mostly comes down to which blue I want. The 3 GB in the iPhone X is holding up just fine for me, so a jump to 6 GB and the camera upgrade on the pro doesn't particularly matter for my use case. I might end up holding onto my X for another year. We'll see.

If the 12 would have something over the mini (like 2 cameras vs 1) I would consider the big one. But being identical, the Mini is way better on hands.

The 12 feels better than the 11P on hands, but is still big and heavy, IMO.

The plus of waiting for the 2021 12S/13 phones might be 120Hz refresh.

The minus might be losing the wired port (Lightning/USB-C) required for CarPlay in vehicles that can't do CarPlay wirelessly.

I think my flip-flopping is done. I'm going for the blue. That is, either I stick to my SE 1 or I get the 12 mini in blue. I really like the white back, but I'm not a fan of the lighter bezels around the screen and the white antenna lines.

This video settles it for me:

I was worried about the blue color as well until seeing this video. No artificial lights here to distort the color. I am happy with the blue again.

Well, fam. My iPhone 12 came today in blue. I currently own an XS. Here are my thoughts.

Speed and responsiveness: about the same as my XS.

5G: I got nothing. Useless feature. Don’t buy the phone for 5G, but you already know that.

Size and Weight: it’s too big. Honestly, I HATE the rounded edges of the 6-11 series iPhones. I NEVER thought I’d say this, but I get why they did it with big phones. The 12 is still too heavy (glad I didn’t bother with the pro) and awkward to hold. Even with the sharper edges it’s still slippery and I feel like I’d drop it a lot.

Color: blue is nice, I like the aluminum coloring, but the back is very loud in bright light. I might go boring black. Not sure.

Camera: Oh my god. I never had the 11, so I can’t compare it with that camera, but to my XS? Night and day. The photos look much like my favorite phone camera of all time the pixel 3. Very crisp and good color balance. Sometimes the portrait shots messed up, but not on people. I do think the pixel camera is still a little better. But then I’d have to use android. Soooo...

Video: still working on that one.

Conclusion: I’m returning the 12 and buying the 12 mini. Ultimately, I want a great phone with an equally great camera to take pictures and video of my kids. With its size and hopefully weight, the mini will, again, hopefully be the point and shoot that I’ve always wanted. Apple, if yr listening - make the dang phones lighter! And work on your size to weight ratio - they just are not balanced like the 5 series was.

contemplating returning the 12 pro for a mini as well. It’s too dang big

I wish the mini was made with the same materials, but am seriously considering it for the comfortability of 1 handed use

The mini looks good except for the width. The height of the mini in inches is .60 inches shorter than the 12 which is good. However the width is almost a 1/3 “ smaller than the 12.

I have to handle it hands on before I preorder but to me the width is significant less wide. Don’t know if it’s because in order to get best aspect ratio they had to get to these dimensions.

I think the 12 mini and the 2020 SE are the best stuff Apple has these days.

The SE is easily good enough for 85% of people, but 12 mini looks to be a true mini-flagship.

Things like Car2Play work REALLY well. I know it’s an additional cost, but we use CarPlay so much more since grabbing one of these!

Currently have the 12 Pro coming from an 8. Also last year had an 11 Pro then went back to the 8.

Yea I only have had the 12P for a day but like before I’m HATING with a capital H that I can’t use it 1 handed or can with a lot of fiddling around. The 8 just feels SO SO comfy in the hand.

I’m in a lot of situations at work where I need to use my device 1 handed while texting performing maintenance.

Another test of mine and you’re going to think it’s crazy is the walking the dog test. Yesterday was walking our dog and my wife text me and I had to stop and use my 12P with 2 hands. Then I got another text and tried to use it with 1 hand and fiddled around and dropped my 12P. With the 8 wouldn’t have to stop and could easily text with 1 hand without fiddling around.

Decided to play with the 8 this morning and my first reaction was ‘wow this feels SO comfy in the hand’.

This is the caveat though. I always wanted an 8 form factor with full screen but the mini is actually going to be smaller than the 8 in form factor but larger screen real estate than the 8.

Can I get used to the 12P? Or do I want to force myself to get used to it when it’s possible the mini will suit my preferences.

Get the iPhone that you can most easily use one-handed, as that seems to be a primary concern for you. Forget about the “pro” moniker and just focus on the actual phone size. That should make your decision easier.

Do it... make the switch. Join the mini camp!

Yea. Second concern is battery life. The 8 battery life sucks.

Plus I don’t even know of the mini will work since it’s smaller form factor but larger screen than the 8. Don’t know if I’ll preorder the mini will want to handle it.

I'm considering stay with the SE. The hype of the 12 is settling down and I paid for the SE half of the Mini.

🤪

I think you know the answer.

“I’ll get used to” is not for me, the phone has to match your lifestyle, no the other way around.

Battery life is also a concern for me. I know for sure that first 8-10 months, it will be just good for me with my average usage; The battery issue will become a bigger challenge when the phone is about 10 months old..

I love the smaller footprint plus its a 1080p screen and has the same camera features. overall, I am very much into the mini phone, just the battery is a concern. Don't want to stick it into a thick battery case that apple will launch later..

I want to go back to a smaller phone as well and am seriously considering the mini. A couple of days ago I put the sim from my 8+ into my son's old SE to see how well I like the smaller size. So far after two days I love how much lighter that phone is in my pocket and how much better it fits in my car. Texting on the smaller screen hasn't been as bad as I had feared.
