The reviewer didn’t even state how he used the battery and you are just going to make a pronouncement, as if his usage is typical of the whole?
I’m not going to make a pronouncement other that to say, “This phone is not for me,” but the reviewer does go on to mention the stuff he typically does with his phone (including taking photos, editing them, etc.) which is basically in line with my usage patterns, give or take.

By and large, I do assign more significance to a person’s real world experience of using the phone to do ‘various random phone stuff‘ over the course of a week than I do the more scientific tests—which are admittedly great for comparing models empirically, but don’t necessarily represent how much juice I’ll get from a full charge under normal operating conditions.

But, as I mentioned a couple of posts ago, there’s probably some confirmation bias influencing my opinion as I’m traumatized by my 6S’s pathetic battery and upgrading to a phone with a bare minimum “average” battery life is a priority for me. The Mini looks fantastic by virtually every other metric though!

It’s just my highly subjective opinion that phones should be built to accommodate a certain standard of battery life—and not the other way around—and that everything should be done to avoid a regression from that standard. It feels wrong to go backwards on such a fundamental component of a phone’s overall user experience.
There’s just a technical reality of what’s feasible at that size. The battery is actually an improvement from the similarly sized SE2, and might also be an improvement from the smaller SE1. Of course some users would prefer a thicker and heavier device in exchange for more battery capacity. Personally I wouldn’t mind more thickness (in particular if it also eliminates the camera bump), but I would mind more weight. Whatever point is picked in the design space, some compromise will have to be made.

At this point, I think we’ll just have to wait for 2-3 weeks to see how the battery fairs in practice for different people. And there will probably be a doom & gloom thread from people who got on the bad end of the gaussian battery variance distribution, or who get unusual battery drain for some other nontypical reasons. But unless you’re a heavy iPhone user, chances are that you’ll be fine.

Why do you have to pull down the SE2 to raise up the Mini?

So funny to see that the mini battery isn't performing well. What did everyone expect?

the people who are getting the mini, by and large, are not "high intensity users" who mainly do the 3 things that drain a battery the fastest - playing games, watching videos and filming video.

if you are a heavy gamer and consider your phone your primary video device, then get the regular 12 or one of the pros.

most of the people who have ordered the mini are CASUAL phone users who see their device as a way to check email, calendar, social feeds, take a few pics, make a few calls and send a few texts - with a single hand.

apple finally has a variety in their phone line and its driving everyone nuts.

just got the california poppy leather case for my black mini. size seems perfect. still debating on color vs. the blue (silicon or leather).

I quit watching her a long time ago. For some reason, I thought I would take a look and see if anything changed for the better. It hasn’t. I can‘t believe her videos pass Apple for anything meaningful. Lots of rambling and fluff without a lot of substance.

yeah but she's pretty...so.....

Agreed. The SE 2020 is also a good choice at $300 cheaper. :)

doesn't matter if you can use one hand as your thumb is biggest finger and its too small to type on

People have been typing on smaller keyboards for years since the first iPhone right up to the SE1 (I’m doing it right now), and on similar-sized keyboards from the 6 up to the SE2. So it’s not like we didn’t ever have such keyboards. Also Marques has huge hands.

His review did not test real world use. It was just refreshing the same website over and over.
You’re right about that. Personally, web browsing matches much of my usage, so I don’t expect it to be too far off. More importantly, the relative comparison to the other models is a useful data point.

Marcus killed it with 4 hours SOT
Are you talking about Marquez, MKBHD? Yeah, but he also said battery life is manageable. He really didn’t have any negative remarks on the battery overall. And he didn’t have it as a reason he wouldn’t use the phone as his daily.
