But it’s not equal at all.

The iPhone 8 Plus has notch less 5.5 inch 16:9 aspect ratio screen where as the iPhone 12 mini screen has a notched 5.4 inch 19.5 aspect ratio. They’re not comparable at all.

The screen area of the 8 plus is 83.4 cm2 and the 12 mini is 71.9cm2, the latter is considerably smaller.
But in daily use it doesn’t feel considerably smaller. At least to me, and I used every Plus phone.

ps... I am missing touch ID from the 5-SE, much prefer touch ID in most circumstances. Would have loved a touch ID on the back since I don't use a case. It would have also been nice if they added a home button to the side. Put the power button back on top, and home on the side. or two button on the side (but really power belongs on top).

Anyone else thinking of running their mini caseless? It’s so nice in the hand I’m wary to put a case on it, especially since I did get AC+.

I seriously considered not using a case on the mini, but I expect to be using it one-handed —once I break the two-handed habit from three years with the X.

I’ve decided to return my Mini and stick to LCD model, e.g. SE2020. That can’t be good for your eyes 👀 It’s unfortunate, because I think the Mini is great in every other way.

I'd consider it if I didn't have to deal with the stupid camera bump. Lots of times I leave the phone on the table to check messages/reply, can't do that with the bump...

I love mine. Always preferred a similar size to the original 2016 SE, and I was worried about OLED PWM (eye strain) and luckily, I don't get it at all.

Wow so that a how it looks without the camera?

Will my XS Max be my last iPhone?

What a pos, if that was my phone I would send it back to.

Definitely not how it looks without a camera. If it is, he has a seriously defective phone. PWM flicker is not typically something you can see with the naked eye. I’m still wondering how much of it is placebo effect.

Yes thanks for having my back. They are quite comparable. When it comes to "what phone should my 65 year old mom upgrade to from her 8 Plus..."...showing her that the entire front of the mini, basically the entire screen, fits inside the usable screen space of her 8 Plus was quite eye opening. She assumed she would need the regular 12.

I said virtually the same. Ignore the notch for a second and the exact cms... - the fact that the entire Mini fits inside the usable screen space of an 8 Plus (excluding the chin and forehead) is quite a magic trick.

I tend to be somewhat sensitive to PWM flicker if the frequency is too low. It used to be a lot of PWM displays (or LED lights) used 50-60Hz for the frequency which is low enough to drive me up a wall once the duty cycle drops low enough. Thankfully this is getting more rare.

The threshold also depends on a few different things: frequency, duty cycle, brightness (can make up a bit for duty cycle), motion, etc. Some differences between individuals too.

I can see 60Hz LED flicker at 50% duty cycle, but my partner can’t. Full wave rectified (120Hz) LEDs work fine for me for Christmas lights, but my PWM based aquarium light controller needed to be setup in the 2kHz range to make the flickering of air bubbles non-objectionable. The 240Hz(?) on the OLED iPhones has been good for me, but it’s about the minimum I’d want for a mass market product trying to avoid flicker effects. It’s not exactly an easy thing to work out exactly what you need to avoid issues.

I gave it the old college try, but I’m returning the mini in favor of the 12 pro today.

I absolutely love the size, but the PWM (presumably) on the Mini is just too much for me. I’ve owned the X, XS, 11 Pro and 12 Pro and had no issues with PWM whatsoever, but using the 12 mini has resulted in noticeable eye dryness and a dull headache behind the eyes.

Small OLED displays may just not be in the cards for me.

They all have PWM. It’s probably more to do with the fact the text is smaller making your eyes strain more.

That’s possible, but I’ve tried increasing the text size and it’s still occurring.

I don’t think that’s ever going to improve, as eyesight is typically degenerative to some degree over time.

Maybe that's actually what I'm feeling when I'm switching from the bigger iPhone XS to this one

For those not reading the other thread here are my first impressions:

So first REAL stress test here. I travel for work and today had a 12h day on the road, through areas with low to bad signal, but also cities with LTE (no 5G contract atm). I did a call a few times and did some surfing and listening to offline music via BT. The usual stuff I also did with my iPhone 11 6.1 before.

At the end of the day I have about 40% battery left, when my iPhone 11 had around 50-60% battery left with similar usage. That is more than I expected. I had signal on all the time and battery life really suffers from traveling through low signal areas instead of staying at home in the city with always good LTE signal. I am very happy. I expected around 20-25% left at the end of the day but it is around 40%. 10-20% less than the iPhone 11. And the battery is new and still needs some time for it's whole potential. Really, really nice atm.

Reception is much better than my iPhone 11 when it comes to holding a signal and using internet in low signal areas. The signal was most of the time displayed similar to my iPhone 11. But I never had much of those no service zones ever with my iPhone 11 thank god so no big change here. But when my 11 couldn't connect to the internet with 2G or 3G reception, my 12 Mini could. I had 4 bars 2G Edge and could load light webpages. The 11 didn't do that or it took way longer to load. Nice!

Call quality is ok, nothing special, but good enough. Had trouble with one call dropped after going from LTE to 3g, but otherwise good but normal call quality.

The device itself on the road is really, really nice. Typing with one hand without a problem, not needing to balance the phone just right to get to the top and not let it slip out of the hand... Very nice. I just have to get used to the small display mode. The larger one is just too large for normal usage. The standard display mode a little too small.

First impressions are very good. Now if they could only do a SW update that fixes those issues with black pixels not turning off. Then it would be amazing.

PS: Did use the phone caseless for 2 days, just feels so much nicer, thinner, narrower, lighter. Perfect!

Damn man, you push up my craving about 12 mini!!

No offset. When you say in the road are you in a car or going to site to site. If you spend time driving from places to places why is battery THAT important? Could you not have just charge the phone in your car?

I am by car or train. Battery is not that important for me, I can charge on the go, well everyone can with a power bank nowadays. It's just nice that battery is better than expected and a good indicator for new users or potential buyers, why shouldn't I mention it???

Above 50% brightness has significantly less flicker.

But true still not close to flicker free as you have on lcd models like the se 2020 and regular 11.

Did you have the de 2020 before buying the mini?
