So I finally got to try out all of the new sizes at a Target.
The Mini really is cool how compact, one-handable, and light it is. I haven't had an iPhone that small since the 4S, and my hands have grown a lot since then (I was a young teen when I had my 4S). I kept accidentally putting my finger over the cameras on the back while holding the Mini, which very well could just be because of Target's huge and bulky security device attached to it, or it could be because I'm used to the spacing and finger placement of holding my XS Max. I'm so used to having such a large device that's comfortable to look at from any distance that, even just after a minute of usage, I started to get worried that I'd have to hold the Mini closer to my face than I'd like/is comfortable if I bought it. However, it's great to finally have the option of a small iPhone that doesn't compromise on features and has an edge-to-edge display.
The 12 Pro Max is nuts. Again, maybe it's due to Target's clunky security device, but the phone just seemed almost tablet sized, and I've never said that about any iPhone I've ever used despite the "phablet" term that's been around since like 2013. The 6.7 Pro Max is so big that it seemed to me like the 6.1 size is closer to the size of my 6.5 XS Max than the Pro Max.
I've been wanting to downsize from my XS Max for about a year now. When I heard the first rumor about the iPhone 12s being available in 5.4, 6.1, and 6.7 sizes, my initial thought was that 5.4 would be too small and 6.1 would be too big. This concern has stood up after finally trying the sizes in person. It seems that a 5.8 size in an iPhone 12/Pro style body would be the best fit for me.
At this point, I'm probably going to wait until next year to upgrade, but I expect to be having a difficult choice between the 5.4 Mini and the 6.1 sizes. I feel like the 6.1 size would be more of a safe bet for me given that I have always gravitated to the Plus/Max iPhones, the 6.1 size will have pretty noticeably better battery life than the Mini, and it still would give me a slightly more ergonomic device with a good display size. However, it still is so close to my XS Max in size that I wouldn't feel that it's big enough of a downsize as I've been wanting. Also, given the fact that iPhone upgrades are so incremental nowadays, I'd like a drastic change in size to make the upgrade feel significant. I just hope if I choose the Mini next year, I won't regret it 3 months in like I did when I downsized from the iPhone 7+ to the iPhone 7.
