That's funny...ironically, if Teslas had this disappearing dash feature, they would be lambasted for it. There is a fervor over "missing" buttons. Imagine the outrage over missing indicators!

While I see some use for it, not really comparable to dark mode.

And yes, tourch screen has never been a real problem for normal daily drivers. The lack of an indicator stalk is a bigger issue (still physical buttons, but working against muscle memory). Pretty much proves that change is the real challenge, not just/only touch screens.

Switching cars or first experience (change) is the issue. I search more for switches and dials in my wife's Suburu, simply because I don't drive it enough to remember everything. I grew up around BMW, Audi, and Mercedes... and no cars have ever confused me (or any other occasional drivers) more. I still really like them, but yeah... a really long learning curve for lots of the controls.
??? All primary controls are the same in the cars. I never understood this part when people say. It is like when they say I don't know how to use this remote control, duh the symbols are exactly the same as on your other control. Same with cars; pedal box is in the same layout, as are the stalks and what they do. As is a gear level. And so on. I constantly switch between RHD and LHD, still the same.

Well there weren't color screen with multi window user interfaces in those day ;)

And with the Saab if you don't like it, just switch it off ;) You had the choice, amazing concept that isn't it.

I agree about Teslas… wonderful cars that make a lot of competitors look antiquated. It’s a real pity Musk has so badly poisoned the brand.

They have very down market interiors especially in the back.
And have you seen what the Chinese car makers have been doing in the last 5 years?
They have left everyone behind including Mercedes.
2 years ago I thought they might take a decade or so to get there but no, they are very definitely in advance of everyone now.
Have you seen the one that can jump potholes? Of the one with emergency float mode that can travel at 3Kmh in water for half an hour? Or the one that can slide into a parking space sideways?
Nio ET9 has astonishing suspension. Just a gadget perhaps but when the large screen is playing a move in 3D, it can be linked to the suspension so it moves with it like a fairground ride. Great for video games.
The ceramic paint is polished for 60 hours
They have made astonishing progress!!

The Chinese auto manufacturers are doing some great things. They definitely are pushing the envelope. I think they will force the non-Chinese to innovate to keep up.

To just add some context to the Light/Dark mode built into the vehicles UI. Here are the settings in my TMY. There is Auto for light vs dark modes and auto for brightness. There also is “Reduce Blue Light” which much like a tablet/cell phone reduces Blue light in the dark.

Just one of the many reasons why when I look for my next car Tesla won’t even be considered.
I would like to see some real world proof that a Tesla inherently is not safer because of the screen than a car with many buttons.

In other words Tesla crashes are due to screen interference vs other vehicles where the cause isn’t driver distraction.

I don’t think any inference of the sort can be made. Anyone who has driven a Tesla after the initial setup, other than the entertainment system, doesn’t need to use the screen. And yes, the audio setup can be improved, but I don’t interact with it while driving.

I want a car that will last for 10 years, have a good warranty and good service network. That eliminates Chinese made evs immediately.

Speaking only for myself owning a bmw and other luxury cars it took my no time to give up that luxury in my mind. The leather accents, soft touch knobs etc. for an electric vehicle at its price point the driving experience is top notch. That I don’t have to go into a dealer, makes the experience sweeter.
That's cool, I've driven a Model 3 and a Y myself and think they are good. We seem to have a bit more choice with EV's in Europe so all preferences seem to be covered.

To be fair, it eliminates Chinese made EVs for us because we don't have them here, and there is no service network, even if they were to start coming. I have no idea of how long they will last. I assume in countries where they are available there are warranties and service networks, but I have no idea.

As a car guy, I try not to knock any vehicles because of who made them, or where they are/aren't available. I would like to see this thread get back to that, to help people make honest decisions on their EV choices.

I’m not knocking the cars as such I’m knocking the practicalities of owning such a vehicle in the US. All of this interesting engineering does nothing if they are proof of concept vehicles or don’t perform as expected in the real world or dont have longevity or don’t hold up in a crash etc.

And yes, I live in the great garden state and grew up near the old westbury music fair.

Sorry, didn't mean to specifically say you were knocking them. The first and third paragraphs were for you. The middle was just what I have noticed in this thread lately.

There are a lot of new things coming out, like insanely rapid fast charging. I do question battery longevity, but hopefully they worked that all out.

If I have not memorized where everything is...I have to look for it. No better or worse for buttons, knobs or touchscreens. Or remotes.

I actually would argue that toucscreen is better, because I can change the layout somewhat to be optimal for me. Good luck moving buttons.

And no, stalks are not all the same, at least not the secondary functions, like wiper and cruise control. Not even getting into secondary stalks...

I have 8 programmable physical buttons in my BMW. Nice and simple.
