After weeks of deliberation, test driving various makes, my wife has decided to get a Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD for her daily commuter, so we'll take delivery of it in 2 - 4 weeks, according to Tesla. I work from home so we had gone down to just 1 vehicle about 3 years ago, but its getting to the point now where a 2nd vehicle is again becoming a necessity.
Enjoy!
Is this your first EV?

Cybertruck Drive Inverter Replacement Recall

Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on certain Model Year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles produced within the build dates from November 6, 2023 to July 30, 2024, that are or were equipped with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) in the drive inverter. The affected population includes vehicles equipped with Inverter Part number family 1802305 containing MOSFET part number 1530063-2A-B.

Congrats. Love mine, same model. The only real gripe is the turn indicators, but it is a minor inconvenience for me, not enough to not love the car.

Have you looked into S3XY commander and stalk?

I have the commander in my 3/Y and also the dial in my Y. Love it…

I am aware of it, but have not looked closely at it yet. Glad to hear you love it!

I do not have their S3XY Stalks, so I cannot report on if it is an elegant solution to those who have issues with the lack of both stalks in the new 3, or shifter in the new Y. But if the quality is like their commander and dial, it may be worth it.

One of the features I like to use is Kickdown mode (I have it on my 3/Y). It keeps the driver's profile in chill until you give a pre-set % go pedal (I have mine set to 90%) where it changes to sport (I have Acceleration Boost on both), once I return the throttle to <20% it changes it back to chill.

Going to look at a Y Long Range tomorrow, 2021. Do all Tesla's have the ability for the self driving? Or is that something that would have to have been added to the car when it was new? Not expecting it to be fully paid for but to have the ability for the monthly payments for it. Will any Y around this year be able to do that or some might now?

All Y's are FSDs capable (HW3 or HW4). The earliest 3's needed an upgrade (2018's had HW2.5).

I have a 21 Y. Here is what you want, to get the most. A late year 2021 will have Ultrasonic Sensors AND Ryzen processor for the infotainment screen. Mine is early '21 so it has Intel (slower and older) infotainment screen. Things are added and removed within years so you can't just go by the year. All 21's - late 24's have Hardware 3 (this is what FSDs uses), so if you are going for 21, no choice but HW3.

21's may not have HEPA filter (but can be retrofitted, I did), also will not have Matrix headlights (I retrofitted mine).

Good to have:
Ultrasonic Sensors (vision-based parking is good now if you don't have these sensors)
Heated Steering Wheel
Heated Wipers (mine does not have, maybe added in late 21)
FSDs (it will say included in the System menu, if it says capable, it isn't included

*Autopilot uses old software that was hard coded by programmers. FSDs has completely rewritten that using AI. You only get this new code with FSDs. I have a feeling they are going to replace the old Autopilot code with FSDs code in the future.

Go to software in the infotainment. Included as purchased FSDs, if it says renewal on date, it means they subscribed to FSDs, capable means there is no purchase (outright or subscription) on the vehicle.

Those that have had a circuit installed for a Tesla home charger, did you get a surge protector installed? I've got a couple quotes back for the charger install, and one company recommends a surge protector install, and the other doesnt mention it at all. So I am just curious to hear what others have done?

No. I don’t think there needs to be on one. You can do a whole house surge protector if you want.

I have 2, one at my house (50 amp circuit = 40 amp charging) and one at my mother in law’s house (60 amp = 48 amp charging). Neither have a surge protector. 3 of my friends have wall connectors, none of them have surge protectors either.

All depends on how your home is currently protected, and how the extra circuit is installed. In the EU/UK it’s in the regulations to have surge protection, so by default electricians will have to ensure it has protection. Naturally that can be at different levels depending on the need and how “full” the consumer unit is already. Often a smart charger is installed on its own spur and if the unit is full can have its own consumer unit. Some are direct, others come off the main one, some are integrated with a solar and/battery storage. So it all depends on the property.

The short answer is yes definitely, do it. But how is impossible to say remotely.

Our UK home is in the countryside, typically runs at 252V and is rather weather and thunder/lightning affected.

That reminds me, don’t forget to ask about earthing and whether your device has inbuilt pen protection.

I don't really have a choice for year as I am getting this car through the company. The one I am thinking I am getting has the Intel Atom chip. It says Full Self Driving Computer - 3.

Infotainment and AP computer are two separate things. Most Tesla's on the road are HW/AP3. I think there are more Ryzen infotainment units than Intel ones now.

Yeah, with 2021 it was the cutover year for Intel Atom and Ryzen, so if the one you are getting has the Intel based infotainment system it is an earlier year 2021 like mine. It will likely not have biodefence mode (HEPA filter) either, but if you want it, you can get it retrofitted. Since I had mine retrofitted, I have experienced before and after, it makes a HUGE difference daily. In the summers when you are caught behind a garbage truck in the NYC area, you can smell the truck from a block away. It significantly reduces the interior smell. If you want no smell at all, you hit the biodefense setting, which essentially makes the interior have positive pressure, so no exterior air comes in. It is very nice.

If I am caught behind someone smoking in traffic, I also hit biodefense mode and there is no smell inside my TMY. I almost always have my 3-year-old in the car with me, so, it's mainly for him.

Not too worried about the bio defense, as cool as it sounds. My commute is through the country so the worst smells are not horrible at all as it is all farm land and I am rarely ever behind anyone on my morning and home commute.

The Y I think I will be getting is the 7 seater, though I think it is a bit rich to be calling it a 7 seater as that back row is pretty much useless even for most kids, zero leg room.

And you lose a lot of cargo space with the seats up.

Mine is a 7-seater. The back can be used for a small child or 2. The 2nd row slides forward on the 7-seaters, which it doesn't on the 5-seaters. I wanted a 7-seater when I was looking. With a small child, it will be useful a couple times per year when I have family over and would like to squeeze into 1 vehicle.

I will have all the back seats down probably 95% of the time. My Outback rarely ever has the back seats up. Back row would for sure be down all the time in the Y. While I will use it as my personal vehicle, it is still a work vehicle and I have no kids so won't need that extra seating. Guessing even with the 2nd row moved up you could not comfortably fit adults in both rows.

Yeah, "you get what you get, and you will like it" says the boss!!!

There are only a few differences between the 5-seater and the 7-seater.
  • The 7-seater 2nd row has tracks where it can move forward for more 3rd row room (or extra cargo with the 2nd row still up)
  • The 7-seater losses the 2nd cargo area (the small under floor area between the rear big area and 2nd row seats)
  • The 7-seater 2nd row does not fold as flat as the 5-seater (not noticeable unless you have both in front of you)
  • The 7-seater has additional structure to protect the 3rd row occupants in the event of a rear end collision.
Since I have a 3-year-old, I have a car seat in the 2nd row passenger side. So, I rarely ever fold the 2nd row down. If I do, it is the driver's side (which will fold the driver's side and middle). When we go to the airport, I usually do this, since there is 3 of us. This way, I don't have to take the underfloor cargo cover out to stand up suitcases.

The 3rd row is small, even with the 2nd row all the way forward. I have sat back there to clean the area; it was an adventure for someone who is 6'2" 230lbs. But I was able to do it. If an adult is short, close to 5', they could sit back there, but realistically it is better suited for a small child or two when you have 3 adults in the 2nd row for a short around town trip. This will be good for when you have guests over and don't want to take a 2nd vehicle.

To me, it is worth having, knowing in the future I will have my son, friends, and family that can take advantage of the additional space. I didn't get the performance model because I wanted the 7-seater, and you can't/couldn't get a 7-seater performance. I made sure to get FSD and Acceleration Boost though.

*This is more for other people who are wondering what the difference is, since you will be using yours as a company vehicle this doesn't really apply to you.

good to know!

This will become my main vehicle as I will be selling my Outback and just keeping the company vehicle, which really is just used to go to work and back pretty much. I think the one being looked at as the acceleration boost add on purchased. I am not a speed demon by any means so would not care one way or another with that. I have driven some of our 3's that have it is and it is a lot of fun for an instant thrill!
