These new MBPs are performance and power beasts! But they also look thick, clunky and bulbous. I've cancelled my 16 inch order because it is hard to spend thousands on a laptop with design cues from 2012. I may consider the 14 but even that looks bulbous. Anyone else considering cancelling/returning?

I am in the opposite place. I am currently using a 15" MacBook Pro Unibody because I didn't like the "new" Retina MacBook Pros that were much more expensive, had limited upgradability, and reduced power output. Things only got worse with the 2016 redesign that basically tried to turn the MacBook Pro into "consumer grade" MacBook.

It short, I have been waiting nearly a decade for this MacBook Pro.
Yes, there is still no user upgradability, but finally the chip design and performance seem worth it to me, to justify the loss of upgradability.

That being said I absolutely respect where you are coming from on this. I do think Apple should consider releasing a 15" MacBook Air along with their redesigned M2 13" MacBook Air. Seems like that is what a lot of non-Pro users might be looking for.

Fair to say that anyone going form over function is not the target audience - the target audience is the one that screamed for function over form as Jony Ive made everything smaller and damned the components that then went out the window to accommodate his paper thin "pro" model. The Touch Bar was his - maybe him moving on wasn't quite the disaster many presumed it would be...

I'm after a pro laptop so i'm defo keeping this one. It's true, it's not exactly bling, it's very much designed for the core Pro Mac user base, many of who have been with Apple for decades.

Absolutely not. My 2013 15" is a great design. I now get 16" in the same form factor.
Pro machines don't need to be pretty.

The macbook 12 was probably the best laptop I ever had until it started slowing down. This format with an m1 makes it a way better alternative to an iPad Pro with a keyboard.
I think a successor to that is coming with the M2. Leakers call it the air because it will be 13in but some leakers have started saying it will be called the Macbook. It will be more expensive than the current air. but more compact and lighter. It might not be as small and light as the 12in, but if they manage to make it under 1kg/2.2 pounds, I am perfectly fine. I am waiting for it to replace my 2.3 pounds 11in air...

Unbelievable how people are impossible to think. Shall we make a very thin 16” MacBook that throttles its performance right after you turn it on? No? Well then accept some thickness and that’s the reason it has got usable ports and that performance.

I’ve jumped on a couple of threads with this recommendation. Those of you who do not like the design, the thickness, the notch, the pricing…. I would suggest the M1 pro with touch bar. It’s light, thin, portable, with battery life matching the new 16in. You can get it for as low as 1199$. I’m considering it myself. Keep it for a year to see if the new MacBook Air is any better, if not you got a solid consumer laptop.

I've not run into a situation in which my Air gets hot, so the M1 Pro should be more than okay. It has a slightly brighter screen, which is nice. But I love how small and portable yet powerful this thing is. I'll probably wait for the M2 Max. This is only their 2nd iteration of the M-series chips and they haven't even gotten started yet. It's a great time to be an Apple nerd.

I HUNGER
I'm not putting it as a centerpiece as part of my livingroom remodel. It is a tool, and will be treated as such. I for one have been hating the whole "thinner" trend all tech products have been following in lieu of battery and performance.

If I want super-thin and light, I have the option of an MBA. If I want slightly thicker and more powerful I have the MBP option now.

Only buyer's remorse I've been having thus far is should I have gone for 64gb ram instead of 32gb.
I'll play a bit of devil's advocate here...
1. These are supposed to be portable machines. There should be a balance between portability and power. Apple has swung the pendulum back from the Ive era a little too far perhaps?

2. If you want a 16 inch machine, no, you can't buy a Macbook Air. That's an argument bandied about on here all the time, but is simple wrong unless the user in question doesn't care about screen size.

3. Apple has ALWAYS been about how the tech looks as well as performance. This is easily the least stylish/funky computer I think they've produced in the OSX era.

In saying all that. I owned the 17inch MBP! Haha. That thing was a behemoth and weighed more than the 16 by a fair whack. So I'm all good even with the outer design because it's a tool first and this tool is the best tool we've just about ever had from Apple.

Yes but don’t forget the M1 pro has fans so if either machine gets warm the pro will have better thermals. Also the M1 pro matches the new macs in single core

Gotta love how there is already an “I’m returning my 14/16” MacBook Pro” thread before anyone has even received one.
honestly think MacRumors should just ban these kinds of threads and move them all to the trash folder. They're so boring and pointless and we get like ten of them for every single product launch. Suspect at least half of those are made by people who think posting negative stuff on an Apple-focused forum is a good use of their time.

I haven’t even received mine yet. The wait time is killing me (Nov 10).

Hence I have no intention of cancelling my order for a notch or the design, as retro always looks cool in my eyes.

There is to much to like with these new MacBook’s to pass up: like the mini led display, 120hz pro motion, and higher resolution.

Also it’s much quieter with little fan noise for more intense graphical tasks, and MagSafe, god knows how many times I nearly tripped over my usb c cable.

Op is a hater. I’d buy the MacBook Pro if it looked like this

At least then we'd have a proper keyboard again.

Alas, my 14" hasn't even shipped so, let the waiting game... continue.

Except I feel like people are making judgements about the "chokyness" of the new design based on some photos. In reality the design is only .02 inches thicker than the old one. I don't even think I could eyeball measure .02 inches without unzipping for reference.

For me the more important metric is the heavier weight. it is .4lbs heavier than the old one (which as a onebagger... aka one bag traveler) I care more about. But in this case the OP is more talking about the thickness I feel.

so why did you ordered one? there was technical info, there were photos, videos... it was’n that difficult to guess it won’t be an anorectic device.
anyway, new macbooks are not that differnet sizewise form their predecessors. + look far better, in my opion..

Meanwhile, professional users (the intended audience) will be using them to create stuff/do proper work on them.

I also canceled my order. I only care about thin and light. Can't justify traveling with a brick every day when the mba m1 is more than enough as a software engineer.
Tell me you didnt have to carry a 7-8lb laptop around to college, without telling me you didnt' have to take a 7-8lb laptop around through college.

I cant take someone that calls a sub-5lb laptop a "brick" seriously.

Basing the purchase of a laptop primarily on how thick / thin it is seems irrational.

In a van down by the river.
I just cancelled my order from the 18th. It was the 16 inch Max with 64gb. The wait time was Nov 19th-24th I believe. Heard about some being in store today and was able to order the 16 inch Max with 32gb ram. I don’t mind size. If it’s powerful and has great battery life. Can’t wait for delivery today between 12-2pm. It’s replacing a 16 in base MacBook Pro. Nothing but praise coming from tech YouTubers and I can’t imagine myself disappointed with this beast.

Sometimes weight is a VERY important factor depending on what you do, and thick/thin follows from that. I know the exec's that travel that I buy laptops for always want as light a machine as they can get, but they also want it to be fast enough. We have been buying Lenovo's and IBM's before that in the thin and light category. (X1 Carbons currently)

I myself want as light a machine I can get when I travel and I'll put up with it being slower to get it. So I get an X1 Carbon (from the company) as well. Now for home, give me as much speed as possible, and weight and battery life isn't an issue. :) The X1 is half a pound lighter than my M1 Air...
