as crazy as it may seem, camping out has sort of become a tradition in a way haha. I just love being a part of the first release experience and being around other people all interested in the same product. luckily the release dates always end up being on days im already off work so that helps as well. just bring a few chairs, my laptop and hangout! I've met some very cool people over the years

#WEIRDNESS Go to a bar if you want to meet people, unless if you're relying on meeting people as weird as you I guess camping is a good fit.

This makes no sense in 2018 to camp out anymore. How is your time not worth more than sitting in line (sorry but I don't see how anyone likes sitting in lines anyhow). And please remember you're waiting in line for a PHONE not food, gas or life's necessities. #questionablepriorities

I've been pretty much anti-camping in this thread but that's an ignorant comment. Meeting people who obviously share a common interest is the one aspect of camping that actually makes sense to me. It's no different than meeting people at a convention, a book signing, or a concert in that regard. I don't see why it's weirder than meeting someone in a bar, where the only things you might have in common is that you drink and are apparently lonely.

I’ve never camped out for a cell phone, but I’ve stood in line overnight for new game consoles. I definitely see the appeal of getting to walk into the store on launch day and take it home with you so you can play with it as early as possible.

Having said that, I preorder online now. Nothing wrong with the alternative, but with the online preorder, at least you can guarantee that you’ll get the color/storage you want.

How does it make any less sense than it did in 2008, 2009, 2010? It's not like that was the dark ages, devoid of internet and preorders.

If someone likes to camp out for a phone, let them. While not for me personally, I could see where it could be kind of fun - a lot better than camping for food, gas, or life's necessities.

There's less difference between someone camping out overnight and someone spending the day sitting around at home not leaving and waiting for the UPS driver than I think some people want to admit to themselves.

In 2008 through 2010 the iPhone was new and revolutionary. Not so much anymore.

If I'm going to camp nowadays it's at a lake near my house. Much better view. AND, there is no cell service up there. Take that with ya.

My point was it didn't make any more sense to camp then than it does now. So what if the phone was revolutionary, you could still preorder it and have it sent to your house. Then again, maybe OP is on a really old phone so any new phone IS revolutionary, but it still doesn't matter. Didn't need to camp then anymore than you do now.

At least though if you chose to camp out and hang out with like minded fellows with the same interest in electronics you are socialising and having s good time whilst waiting for said device. Better than sat in a dark room staring at a screen on your own (unless that’s your thing lol)

It just makes the act of doing this an experience and actually a different experience you might not do every day!

Big difference in the camping line from 2008-2010 to 2018 at Apple retail stores. 10 years ago most of the customers were buying the iPhone for their own personal use and enjoyment. Nice friendly people. Today, a high percentage of "customers" are only buyers who turn two sealed iPhones over to group leader with a shopping bag just outside the store. Then its off to the next line or store. I prefer to pre order, with the only bad part being the 3am get up.

Actually, your own statement doesn’t make sense, because you’re not everyone else and your statement doesn’t apply to everyone else’s preferences. For the record, Who cares what someone else does, if they choose to take part of a festivity that’s been ongoing for 10 years, then so be it.

Hypothetically speaking, if the keynote is 9/12, we can expect pre-orders to start 9/14 with delivery dates of 9/21. Barring any production problems or a delayed released like the X last year, correct?

I totally agree. I would never do that now. 10 years ago it was fun. Something to do. I did not camp overnight or anything, but I did wait in line with friends for hours. It was a different time for me then. Now I am too busy to do anything like that.

I don't have time to camp. I have a JOB.

Then you need a better job with better management. :D

I'm the opposite. Back when I had a 60+ hr/wk job, I would camp out. Now that I'm pretty much retired, I preorder and pick up at my local UPS hub.

To those who are young and have the freedom to camp out, let the fun begin. I'll experience the excitement of a new phone from the MacRumors forum, which can also be fun.

I have never "camped out" for an iPhone or any product.

I did wait in line for the first iPhone… it was fun and exciting.

However I will never deny the right to anyone who wants to go and wait or camp out overnight. Enjoy it.
Good luck!

Myself? i'd rather get on with life (oh, and make sure I'm there when the door bell rings!). :)

Exactly my experience.
But as you write, that was 10 years ago. Life was different back then. (I had more hair for one thing! ;))

For all you know he's a doctor who has to be on-call to perform surgery at a moment's notice. Some jobs definitely take priority over waiting in line for a phone. In fact, I'd say that most jobs do. ;)

Or you have to be sitting out in the rain/cold/sun at a store.
I'd prefer coffee at my house while watching a little Rick and Morty.

See? A joke. :D
