I went full polish and shine with my latest acquisition. A new Yachtmaster with sunburst blue dial. This is one of my favorites so far. Very comfortable and extremely versatile with what it can be worn with.

If you are looking for a good quality automatic for not a lot of money you should check the Steinhart range.

Thanks for the recommendation unfortunately had a hard time finding something i liked that was in my budget after taking in to consideration the exchange rate. I was looking on the Seiko site and found the Seiko 5 SNXS77 I've heard the bracelet can be noisy I will find a leather strap. Thoughts?

The watches are great quality for the money but the bracelets are budget items which rattle a bit and are known for trapping the hairs on your arm. Adding a decent leather strap will be a worthwhile upgrade.

Great read. I read it when it was first posted here. Other than Hodinkee and Crown & Buckle who if anyone would you recommend for a leather strap.

Is this a good watch?

Akribos XXIV Men's AK844YGB Round Black Radiant Sunburst Dial Two Time Zone Quartz Bracelet Watch

I was cruising Amazon.com a minute ago looking for some gifts for my sister and niece, like some bracelets or something and saw this. It said it listed for $695, and it was one of those lightning deals where you only have a few minutes to buy it at a discount. I got it for $69.97, a 91% discount!

Heck, even if its not a great watch or worth the $700, I won't complain at spending $70.

Glad you got a deal I wouldn't spend 700$ on a quartz watch. My dad on the other side paid about 1000$ for a beautiful quartz Movado and has had it for 30 years now.

The watch arrived yesterday and I'm already returning it today. The band has a slight twist to it, which it shouldn't. The clasp is very clunky and over time, would become weak and easily come apart when wearing it.

Well, my Omega Deville - which is actually a quartz watch - was around €800 when I bought it six years ago.

And I haven't regretted it for one minute (the dial is a bit like those 60s classic watches, with Arabic numerals at the 2, 4,6, 8, 10, and 12 parts of the quadrant, dauphine hands, a lovely needle style sweep second hand and a nice understated date function on the first quarter).

Here's a quick and dirty shot of my 70's tv dial Seamaster. I have a feeling that Scepticalscribe will like this one.

Yes, I am rather partial to those old Omegas, although, I suppose for myself, were I to buy, I prefer the spare, understated classic appearance of the watches from the 50s and 60s to the TV style of the 70s.

But yes, very lovely, and thanks for sharing. I remember when those watches were the latest thing in cutting edge cool, though.

I must admit when reading your post that it crossed my mind that a possible 90% reduction was something of a red flag; call it an issue with the 'willing suspension of disbelief' as they say in theatre.

Anyway, I think you have done the correct thing in returning it.

I'd love to see your Omega.

I'd love to see your Omega.

It has a champagne - or a sort of pale cream - coloured face (rather than white) and is stainless steel (the equivalent black faced model was around €1,200, which didn't look as well on my wrist, while the actual automatic chronometer - not quartz - equivalent gold model was not far off €3,000 at the time, and was, besides, a somewhat larger and fatter watch on my wrist, which meant that it looked less elegant).

I had been eyeing it for around three years before I bought it, and couldn't justify such a purchase on a teaching salary. However, working abroad meant such purchases were within financial reach, and it was my Christmas present to myself in 2009.

As I mentioned earlier, it is absolutely lovely, a subdued classic in appearance, with that understated elegance (that was readily found in the 60s designs) that I love. Actually, it is the sort of watch that nobody notices unless they are really into watches.

Unfortunately, I can't post a picture as I don't have a mobile phone with a camera - my mobile is an antique Nokia, and my camera is a Leica (a M6) that takes film.

If I can find someone with a decent digital camera who might be in a position to photograph my watch, I'll see if I can post a picture.

These days, the closest Omega watch in appearance to mine can be found in their 'Prestige' collection, the most understated model is not unlike mine, although, like a lot of brands, some of their stuff is becoming far too ostentatiously loud for my personal taste..

I've only just found this thread, so hope you all don't mind if I jump in and join you.
I've been a watch lover for a number of years, and hope that I can show you one or two that you've probably never seen before. I'm a great fan of IWC's and especially Omega's - the vintage Speedmasters particularly excite me. But here's something different. The Omega Flightmaster.

Omega Flt 2.jpg

Omeg Flt1.jpg Omega Flt 3.jpg

This version is the caliber C910, hand-wound chronograph circa 1970. A large watch for it's era at 43mm.
One of the 4 colour-coded external winders turns the blue hand in order to set any time other than local (say GMT), in order to know in a glance the time in two places at once. Needless to say the watch was created by Omega with pilots in mind, with their frequent change of time zones.
I'd been after one of these for a few years, and finally purchased this superb, near-mint model some 14 years ago. I think it's sacrilege to lock beautiful 'toys' away for none to enjoy, so this one gets occasional wrist time.

Lovely watch and interesting story.

Glad to hear that it gets what yo have called 'wrist time'. I agree that beautiful - and functional - objects should be used for the function for which they were created.

I've finally ordered myself the Seiko Sarb033 or as it's also affectionately known, the Baby Grand Seiko'. I've been after one for quite some time and felt I deserved an Xmas present from myself after a hard couple of months finishing work projects. It'll look nice on my wrist in the boardroom too lol.

I should get it the first week of January, I can't wait :)
