to me, it's not necessarily how much money you make or what the ratio is. we all prioritize things in life, including material things. if you can afford something nice and if it speaks to you on an emotional level, i would do it. if you're buying it just so that other people will say, "hey nice rolex or whatever," i would think twice.

this is very true. and although i've been fiscally responsible my whole life - i have my own home(s), i've funded my kids' future college educations and i've saved for retirement, i have a few vices. i like watches, cars and food (and wine). most people can't understand why i would "waste" a lot of money on these things, but it's what makes me happy. i also used to be a big gambler, but even i realized that was like flushing cash down the toilet. :)

here's cheap seiko beater for you. :D

Very good post, and I must say that I quite like the Dauphine hands on that watch. Classic and elegant.

That looks a great watch, I'll have to have a closer look at the Orient range.

It is and you definitely should.

I think given pessimism around global economies amid falling oil prices and slowing growth in China, Orient and other entry level watch manufacturers such as Tudor and Frederique Constant will increase in popularity. Speaking of which, really liking the fact that Tudor are putting their in-house movements into the new 2016 Black Bays. Not so keen on the PVD black version though - not really in keeping with the whole Heritage concept that the Black Bay did so adeptly when it was launched in 2012.

Love the IWC - that is a truly gorgeous timepiece; how old is it? Anyway, long may you enjoy wearing it.

Thank you. My Portugieser is only around a year old. The IW5007 was only introduced last year to incorporate an enhanced movement with ceramic parts (in theory to enhance susceptibility to wear and tear) and twin winding barrels for better accuracy.

Finally, an Orient Sun Moon. Probably the best value automatic watches money can buy these days. Very accurate movements and some delightful details, including a lovely blue leather strap with deployment clasp, keeps this one on the wrist far more often than others in my collection.

That Orient is just gorgeous. Look at the detail on the face and it has a couple of different design cues on the face too. Nice. I purchased a Orient Classic with the champagne colored face for my son this past Christmas. Again, numerous design cues and textures on the face, sapphire crystal, deployment clasp and a good movement AND a display back. My son isn't exactly "in to" watches but he wanted something dressy and traditional and seems to enjoy it.

Is that the grand Seiko with Diamond dust dial or whatever?

As for your other comment I feel I am just too young to have such a luxury. I don't currently own a car or home (don't want either for now) Fully funded retirement last year but still have tax-free accounts that aren't maxed out. I just feel like these nicer watches are to be purchased for when you accomplish something special for yourself and I don't feel I am there yet but I am still unsure what/when that will be.

New Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day. Micro Artist Studio-built (Credor). Platinum case with Zaratsu polish. Diamond dust dial. Philippe Dufour-approved. $55k. :D

Gotta do what's right for you! I waited to buy my first Rolex shortly after purchasing my first house. Was still single with no kids at the time.

I've had a good look and my only concern is the 42.5mm case size. My CWL and Seiko mechanical watches are both around that size but they are both tool watches. The CWL is a diver and the Seiko is a military style watch and I'm worried the Orient might look a bit too big on my slimmish wrist with it's small bezel, especially as I'd probably have to buy from the far east making it difficult to return if it does wear too big.

Nomos have a stylish Bauhaus design, quite similar to Braun (quartz) watches for me. Unfortunately I don't like how they look on my wrist :(

Nomos watches look a bit weird on the wrist because most of their models have long thin lugs. That's why i have the 35mm Tangente, although i usually wear 38-40mm watches. :)

Try the Orion. It feels better on the wrist, you might like it.
Also, check these out http://www.junghans.de/en/junghans-collection/watches/maxbill/detail.html. They have a similar design.

Gorgeous watch, and the sort of design that I, personally, really like, a design that is elegant and understated and classic.

Long may you enjoy wearing it and enjoying it, and thanks for sharing.
