I am curious if someone would like to share what is the income ratio to watch prices. Most of the watches I would love to own would cost me several months of pay and I would feel a little worried wearing it. I am still looking/ open to suggestions.

I got my PAM's 00441 back in 2013, it took me 3 months saving for this lovely timepiece

Love the "dirty dial", especially the case which is made from ceramic, it's scratch resist that makes it my daily beater.

Thanks for the reply I love the look of your watch.Ceramic makes for nice watches. Any concerns about cracking or is that not possible?

Well everything is possible, but so far so good no complaints about the case nor the movement. Timepieces made out of ceramic is long lasting, just make sure it doesn't hit something hard and service it every 3/5 years.

Well, to be honest, I spent a few years admiring my Omega before I bought it.

Actually, I am a great believer in the concept of deferred gratification; it mean that you appreciate and enjoy what you buy all the more when you finally do take possession of it.

i'm guessing that you'll get many different answers especially from a larger sample from a watch forum. i think that we all put value in different things beyond monetary worth. i also think that these values often change during the course of one's life. find something that sings to you and enjoy it. if you're scared to wear a nice watch daily, get a cheap beater on the side.

Well wear and long may you enjoy it.

Seriously, as long as the watch isn't too ostentatiously 'bling bling', or loud, or gaudy, in appearance, I would not worry about wearing it daily.

I bought my Omega Deville seven years ago, and it has been on my wrist ever since.

A general statement that I saw made in some of the watch forums I look at is if you have to make a payment plan to get your desired watch you should probably hold off until it's more feasible to your income/budget. Not saying this in a mean way, but there are far more important things to buy than watches, they are simply material.

Absolutely. I am very much opposed to debt and payments. I was wondering more at what point is a watch too expensive.

Say someone makes 50 000$ a year, how much of that should be spent on a watch? I read the millionaire next door (great book, highly recommend it) and they said the average millionaire (person with a net worth over 1 million $) spent about 400$ on a watch. You can't buy much of a "luxury" watch for that price.

Very true. That book (great btw) is also a bit of an uncommon circumstance. Hasn't Warren Buffet been saving since he was 12 and not spending a dime on anything? Does Zuckerberg drive a Prius? Yes.

Wealth is a funny thing, it is truly how one chooses to manage it. If watches are your thing, and you have no other interests or expenses, you could probably spend quite a lot on a nice timepiece. If you are into other things (obviously Apple products) you may want to make exceptions to your other spending. All in all, you deserve what fits your needs and what you can responsibly afford.

I will likely never own any watch of the B&M, Panerai, Patek, High-end Rolex fashion. Multiple reasons, I don't care for the style sometimes, I'd rather place my money somewhere else, etc. This isn't for any other reason than personal preference. At the end of the day if a Seiko makes you happy, then buy a Seiko. If someone has a problem with it, there are much larger issues at hand. *pun intended*

I agree funny you say that I will likely buy a seiko soon as an every day watch. I don't mind spending more money on a more expensive watch I really like the speedmaster and the black bay red. I just can't see my self buying this because it would be one of my bigger purchases. The only thing I have spent more than say 3000$ would be to get out of debt and making investments in retirement accounts and the likes.

Made a few acquisitions since the last time I posted in this thread, but had not got round to taking photos of them until recently.

My Rolex GMT Master II BLNR which is the perfect travel watch. It is a particular pleasure at the end of a flight to be a able to adjust the hour hand independently while the watch is still running (although admittedly slightly useless for Indian half hour time zones).

IWC Portugieser 7 Day Reserve (IW5007) I was looking at a dress watch which was slightly off the beaten trail. Always liked IWC and the new movement in the 7 Day Reserve seemed to have rectified the slightly below average accuracy of the earlier iteration.

Finally, an Orient Sun Moon. Probably the best value automatic watches money can buy these days. Very accurate movements and some delightful details, including a lovely blue leather strap with deployment clasp, keeps this one on the wrist far more often than others in my collection.

That looks a great watch, I'll have to have a closer look at the Orient range.

Love the IWC - that is a truly gorgeous timepiece; how old is it? Anyway, long may you enjoy wearing it.

to me, it's not necessarily how much money you make or what the ratio is. we all prioritize things in life, including material things. if you can afford something nice and if it speaks to you on an emotional level, i would do it. if you're buying it just so that other people will say, "hey nice rolex or whatever," i would think twice.

this is very true. and although i've been fiscally responsible my whole life - i have my own home(s), i've funded my kids' future college educations and i've saved for retirement, i have a few vices. i like watches, cars and food (and wine). most people can't understand why i would "waste" a lot of money on these things, but it's what makes me happy. i also used to be a big gambler, but even i realized that was like flushing cash down the toilet. :)
