Garmin Fenix 2. Lost the charger for my Forerunner and so decided on an upgrade. This watch can do loads, including receiving notifications from my iPhone.

Know we talked a bit about the Mont Blanc, but which of these would you pick and why (yea yea not a Breitling or a Rolex or a Panerai or a Pathek but whatever):

Mont Blanc Star Classique Date:

Quartz, $2475

Raymond Weil Toccata (the silver one; the small seconds hand is kind of cool):

Quartz, hard to find an MSRP but goes for under $1000:

The Raymond Weil watch - by far; it has an elegant, classic appearance that I, personally, find attractive.

To be honest, I don't much care for any of the others - and the Burberry watch is frankly, absolutely awful. However, of the rest of your chosen field, the Victorinox also manages to achieve a classic appearance.

Thanks, I kind of agree - the Raymond Weil is really a nice looking watch, though I'd never heard of them until I saw the watch today at Macy's. I really like the small second hand, never seen that before so that makes it kind of unique. I have to also say, the Victorinox watches look much nicer in person as well. Burberry is probably my last choice at the moment.

Actually, you will find the small seconds feature on quite a number of older watches (say, watches from the 1940s); personally, I find it very attractive, (but - apparently - it is more prone to breakdown…..)

However, nowadays, watches tend to come with 'sweep' second hands instead, unless they are digital, which is a wholly different way of approaching the measurement and notation of time.

I am in the market for a new watch. I am looking for a Swiss made watch for <1000$. It has to be waterproof.

I like the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean but it is out of my budget. Any recommendations?

Check out Christopher Ward. They do some nice Swiss watches relatively cheaply. The Trident range are their divers.

Otherwise have a look at Glycine, Stowa, Halios, Steinhart. They're all decent brands.

Or, a different thought, you can perhaps look out for a trade-in; some of the very good watch stores and jewellery stores take the premium brands (Rolex, Omega and so on) as trade-ins against the price of a new watch. Some of these are in excellent condition and are available at an affordable price.

Thanks. Thoughts on getting a replica?

Good idea I will look into it.

Depends what you mean by replica. If you mean a well made watch which takes design cues from a particular style, containing a decent movement and quality materials then that's fine. If you mean a straight up cheap copy then you're just buying it to look like you have style and taste without any real regard for the industry and craftsmanship. It's a personal choice I guess but I would never buy a replica. I have a couple of watches that are inspired by famous designs but they are honest homages and not a cheap attempt t fooling others which dilute the original brand. An example would be my Zeno Explorer below which has an antique Swiss movement in it.

Which is a Rolex Explorer homage.

Who's got a nice watch?

Homages such as the one above is not too far from a fake watch, in my opinion.

Both are potential copyright infringements although the one above may not be illegal, which is of course very important.

I get what you're saying and I agree in some respects. To me though, a fake or replica will exhibit the same writing and branding as the original and make no attempt to honour the original design in any way in regards to manufacturing standards. I realise that is just me saying that if it is a cheap piece of crap then it's not ok but if it is an expensive and well made copy then it's ok. That matters somehow to me. My Zeno has a decent ETA movement in it and is from a reputable company so does that make it any worse than another Submariner clone from the likes of Oris, Omega or Blancpain? Is it ok that the AP Royal Oak and Patek Nautilus are so similar just because they are high end manufacturers?Of course they have subtle differences which make them all different enough to not be straight copies like my Zeno is when you come down to it.

The reasoning behind my purchase of the Zeno was that I love the Rolex Explorer design but will never be able to afford one so I looked for something in the same style.

I've kind of argued your point for you haven't I. I'll shut up now because I'm clearly and idiot :)

Never say never MacRy! You never (ha ha) know. Next thing you know, you might be looking down at a Explorer (I prefer the II though) on your wrist. My point, you can't tell the future so don't assume you'll never get one :)

@puma,
Spending that much money on a quartz is kind of silly imo (the mont blanc). Different strokes for different folks though so if those watches really call out to you, then i say go for it!

But if your budget is at 2500 (again, the mont blanc) I would recommend you looking into Nomos. They make absolutely gorgeous watches.

My life would have to have a spectacular upturn to enable that to happen my friend :) I do plan on getting myself a lightly used Datejust for my 50th birthday though so only eight year of savings to wait until then.

+1

Have my eye on this piece:

Oh god I love Nomos watches. The Tangente is a favourite of mine and in a similar vein I really like the Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope.

So did anyone else in the US get a Sistem51 now that they're available for order online?

I got mine from the South Coast Plaza Swatch store (Costa Mesa, CA) last Friday since they got them in that day.

Ooh pretty. Is that your BLNR next to the sistem?

I was contemplating on picking one up, still am, just couldn't find an occasion to wear it. I feel like every situation that you can wear a sistem, my g shock already is worn.

Yes, the BLNR gets most of my wrist time.

I agree that the Sistem51 won't see much wrist time compared to my G-Shock Rangeman, but I wanted to get my hands on one just to have. It's a really cool watch for what it is.
