Depends on where you live and what someone is buying the device for. Someone, for example, who is into drawing or into designing 3D will almost always buy the iPad Pro with pencil combination. Older people (60+) don't even have laptops on their radar.
I’m over 60, have a Windows workstation desktop, three MS Surface devices, and three iPads (sold the other two), couple of Android tablets. A MacBook isn’t on my radar because I use some software that is Windows only. The Surface Go 2 is my perfect portable Windows device. I don’t use the pen with it often, but it comes in handy when I need a digital white board.

I use an Apple Pencil on all three iPads (Pro 11, Pro 10.5, Mini 5). I wish it were more for art, but it isn’t. I do work through Procreate tutorials and maybe one day I‘lol have more time and will use iPads for art. I annotate homework PDFs, screenshots, and photos with the pencils. I’ll be creating prescribed burning maps for our camp on my iPP 11 within the next few days.

My first iPad was an iPad Pro 9.7 with pencil and keyboard (but I‘m not your average computer user). I typically buy a little below top of the line, seldom if ever at the low end.

I wish there were more like you :) Most of my older clients just buy the iPad 8 for FaceTime and to play card games...

I'll ask you how you feel in less than 2 weeks. Unless the Pro you just got was heavily discounted I don't think you will want to keep it. Patience is a virtue of saints :)
Hahahahahahaha
We talked about how we would feel if a new model was announced the day after we picked it up. Decided that unless something earth shatteringly different is added, it won’t really make a difference. The screen is already phenomenal on the Pro so an updated screen will hardly be noticeable and as I said there is not much that can be done at the moment to max out either the A12z or A14chip.

I mean if you really think about it, what is scheduled to change?

Main changes will likely include:
  1. Some variant of A14 or A15 added
  2. Maybe slightly different screen
  3. Maybe improved camera setup
  4. Maybe 3rd gen pencil
Size is likely to stay the same to work with current accessories.

Wasn't about patience or impatience. We are happy either way because it is such a quality device. The biggest improvements on iPads at this point will be software anyways.

I also learned my lesson last year on holding out on a good device due to rumors. I waited for months to buy an Apple TV hearing constantly it was around the bend. Eventually got tired of waiting, went for it and regret nothing.

Regardless of changes, the current device will be cheaper to buy so if anything, by waiting less than 2 weeks you would probably save at least $100 if not more.

So, you might be happy with 2 generations old tech but the truth is that newer device will last you longer and will be easier to resell. And as you said, biggest change will be software which will need the power from the hardware. If the software improves to some other stuff and will need the extra power from current A14X tech and you are on old A12Z tech then there is your loss too.
At the end of the day its your call, your money and your sanity. If I were you I wouldn't do it like this as I like to keep my devices for a long time and want to maximise my usage, value, etc.

But lets revisit this on 23rd and see how you really feel about this purchase :)

Unless it is Earth shatteringly innovative and not an incremental update(most likely), I’ll feel the same about it as I do now which is why we bought it after weighing how we would feel when a new one popped up. We bought it for working purposes and decided the benefits of having it now outweighed waiting on the next iteration.

Using my Wife’s Pro next to my Air with a newer chip, I actually really appreciate the smoothness of the Pro.

We never resell devices so that is irrelevant to me. I welcome an update from Apple and love their tech but iOS and iPadOS are so good that usability gen to gen stays so consistent on upgrades that it is almost boring (in a good way).

Example, I upgraded from iPhone SE 2016 to an iPhone 11 and aside from the obvious screen and camera upgrades they work equally well to this day.

I have never used FaceTime and can’t imagine wanting to. I use Teams and Zoom mainly on my Go 2, work stuff.

If an iPad 8 does the job, why not get it?

Even though I don’t use the pencil as much as I could, the pencils have allowed me to switch from grading paper (it’s been easier for me to see and mark paper than work electronically in the past, and I’ve tried working with electronic markup off and on for probably 15 years) to grading PDFs. With the iPads, pencils, and OneDrive, grading electronically is working so well that I won’t go back to paper even when we are back in the classroom full time.

There isn’t much about this pandemic that has been positive, but being forced to figure out how to work completely electronically has made me develop a different workflow that turns out to be superior for both my students and for me.

You forget the dozens-of-pages long threads on insensitive touchscreens and bending that’s taking place with current Pro models. Some of us are hoping for a strengthened chassis to solve that issue as well. I

I’m not arguing that apple shouldn't update their lineup. Just that any updates at this point are very much so welcomed but incremental really.

How are people bending them?

Well that sucks. Mine seems straight. I wonder if this contributed to the shortage last year beyond just pandemic caused? Perhaps getting manufaturing sorted out?

I just had a client who was also a teacher and this was her first iPad/Pencil.

I told her how much she'd love it and she especially loved that she could write on it and grade papers.

I love writing on my iPad Pro as well, but I couldn't imagine grading papers on it. Well, I have annotated on documents, but the dealbreaker was always in getting the documents from the students onto my iPad, and then back to them again. It was just too much hassle for me, but kudos to your friend if she can get it to work.

Personally I would love to see Apple implement a concept Ubuntu mobile tried to push for. Your device in your pocket is the brains of everything and depending on what you want, you dock that device into a shell of a tablet, laptop, etc. Imagine having an iPhone that you dock to a large monitor that then gives you Mac OS GUI.
Windows 10 Mobile implemented such a feature. Of course, I'm sure we all know what later ended up happening to Microsoft's mobile efforts...

Pages mean nothing. The only thing that matters is the amount of reported issues in that thread and how many are truly genuine.

My students submit their files to Moodle, including a PDF of their printouts (I teach a statistical programming course). Using my desktop computer, I download their PDF to a folder (one folder for each assignment or exam) In my OneDrive. I have merge printed individual grading rubrics to that folder. I open their PDF on the iPP 11, their rubric on the Mini, and my output (key) on the iPP 10.5. OneDrive has markup capability with the tap of an icon.

I use a Logitech crayon so I don’t have to swap pencils.

When I’m done, I combine the rubric and marked paper into a new PDF using my desktop and upload that to Moodle.

Small class and it takes longer for me to type the process for downloading, combining, and uploading than it does to actually do it.

The students seem to like getting PDFs back.

One is probably looking at about a good 5 years of great usage with the current iPad Pro, I don’t know why people try talk about it like it will some how be a slouch or lose support lol

Your thinking is right. The 2020 iPad Pros brought 6GB RAM to the entire lineup, it’s going to be a long time before Apple increase RAM or make any major software that can burnout a A12X or A12Z.

Of discussion. There has been one forum member in the last few dozen records with a bent device. Which - as is pointed out there - happens to Samsung stuff as well, hence buyer beware regardless.

Keep telling yourself that. For myself (who had unresponsive screens on not one, but TWO 12.9” Pros) it’s indicative of a design problem.

We've had several clients come in with unresponsive screens. In each case it took only around 20 minutes to resolve. I don't see this as a design issue as 99.999% of iPads don't experience this.

Only reason I'm interested is whether it means there would be iPad Pro 11 2020s in the refurbished store. I recently got an Air 4 but would prefer to buy a refurbished pro simply for the 120 hz refresh rate. At the moment the pro is just too much for my uses, which don't really come close to pushing any of the current processors. But as I read and move around a lot of text, wish I had a ProMotion display...

Resolve as in erase and start fresh?
