It is useless because none of the people I need to talk to use iMessage, and they have iPhone. They are all in LINE. Others have Samsung, so you end up using LINE anyway, then everyone eventually ends up using LINE.

So they never use the Messages app on the iPhone. Because iMessage is built in and would work if they used the standard app.
But if they want to use a third party app? That's fine. I'm sure LINK has compelling features that can't be done on texting or iMessage.
But that doesn't make iMessage a less compelling feature for iPhone users.

I did turn it off. My point was why does nobody else ;-)
As for being a 'troll', come again? I'm questioning an Apple feature's dealbreaking merit and therefore I make no sense to you?

Maybe there are a few or several million people who find apples iMessage and FaceTime useful for them? I don't take any umbrage personally you think the iPhone lacks in a lot of areas. Apple is doing very well in spite of your hesitations and your lack of interest in two of its core applications.

As a parent with a 2 year old boy, Facetime is a lifesaver for us when it comes to grandparents being able to see him regularly. I realize that doesn't work out for everyone but for families who all use iPhones it works well. And for those who have friends and family members where the majority use iOS, iMessage is definitely better than standard SMS.

But again, facetime can be done from iOS to Android or Windows or any combination thanks to Skype or Hangouts so even that isn't a valid point any longer either.

It is though because its just not as convenient as Facetime. Skype and hangouts you have to have an account and you have to launch the app and go through a different company. Facetime is basically a phone call with video.

To use an Apple product you need an account, and you need to give them your credit card details. To open my Whatsapp 'account' I needed to give them an email address and my device's phone number. Hardly a big deal.

Well, to each there own I imagine. For me and my family iOS works better, but I get that for others Android is there preference, and I respect that.

Android isn't my preference, I currently own an iPhone and my previous phone was an iPhone too. I do however dispute the greatness of certain apparently 'amazing' iPhone features.

I use my phone for calls, texts, light web browsing, and a few apps. If it can do those things and do them well, that's all I care about.

Yeah, I owned the Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, S4, Note 2, and Note 3...and I kept expecting the clunkiness of the OS to go away with each release and it never did. I like Android just fine, otherwise I wouldn't have stuck it out for so long, but for me I like the simplicity and ease of use that comes on iOS. Others have different opinions and like different things, and it's all good

Android has all those bases covered too you know.

Hey, iOS is (mainly) great and I slightly prefer it.

No you do not have to give credit information. That is an outright false statement. It's true to use iMessage and FaceTime you need some type of account, but so what.

Android has all those bases covered too you know.

But it's not as slick as iOS IMHO. Blackberry and wp have those bases covered also, if this is the new yardstick from which we are measuring mobile o/s functionality.

Ah, well maybe that's just to install free Apps then.
Who here has an Apple device and hasn't given their card details to them? Not many I would wager. I have never used Facetime so I don't know.

Me, I did not give my cc info when I opened an account. You clearly do not need cc info for FaceTime.

I'm still not seeing why iMessage is soooo important. However did you guys manage to stay in touch with anyone before Apple came to the rescue? :-/
Not as conveniently, that's for sure. I've received a bunch of SMS and calls that I never got around to answering because my phone was hiding in the couch cushions or something. It annoys my mom greatly when that happens. The iPad is less likely to be lost in between couch cushions. Besides, I'm probably using it or if not, I have it sitting beside me for easy access anyway.

I did turn it off. My point was why does nobody else ;-)
Because some people actually find these features convenient even if you hate them. Not everyone shares your preferences you know.

You also persist in ignoring arguments as to the merits of these features for other individuals. Do other options exist? Sure. Do they work just as well? Not always. Are they as easy to setup and use? Likely not.

Only when pay for apps are downloaded is a payment type needed. Free apps do not require a payment type.

Are you sure that's always been the case? I'm fairly sure that when I got my first iPhone 4 years ago, I had to input my card details before downloading my first app - which was free.

No, apple may have changed their policies over time. At this point there is no cc linked to my account. I do not have an issue downloading free content.

Built quality. Plastic makes it feel like a toy.

The choice of materials doesn't equate to build quality. Things like loose buttons, panels which don't meet squarely and rattles etc denote poor build quality. Oops, I just described my iPhone there! However, my plastic Android tablet has impeccable build quality.

What on earth have you done to your iPhone to have all those problems? If you have loose buttons, screens that don't line up correctly and things rattle you are well overdue for a genius bar appointment.

But anecdotal stories don't prove much. My sister's S4 squeaks like an old bed while my 5s is as solid and quiet as a rock.

Everyone I know who has an iPhone 5/5S has loose volume buttons and/or a loose power button. They also have a rattling camera or a loose/clicking home button. I was lucky with my old iPhone 4 as it had no faults whatsoever. My first FIVE iPhone 5 handsets had loose buttons out of the box, so please don't make out that this is just me being unlucky. There have been numerous threads about loose iPhone buttons.
