If the 12 Mini is indeed a one year model, hedge your bet and buy one today and don't touch it.
I suspect the increased value of an unopened iPhone 12 Mini next year would be substantial.
I don't see the mini being treated (price wise) like the very first iPhone. If the 6% in sales were in the neighborhood of 50% and Apple stopped producing for some reason, I would expect third party market prices to soar. As is, the mini is a great phone but, it's nothing unique or special.

Well I’m not sure that would be more popular (iPhone 11 would undercut it quite a bit), but even if it were, is that a good thing for Apple? It depend on whether those additional $699 phone sales come from 12/pro buyers moving down (bad), SE/Xr/11 buyers moving up (good), or new buyers entirely (very good). Unless it’s mostly the third group, it probably makes very little difference to Apple.

That's why Apple has paid executives to make this decision. So they can come up with ways to grow the pie, not just cannibalize their other sales.

It’s already a sunk engineering cost for Apple. They’re stopping iPhone 12 mini production as they have plenty of supply. But that doesn’t mean they’ll stop selling them. iPhone 13 mini is a given since it’s just a refresh.

Beyond 2021, I doubt Apple will risk making a 5.4” iPhone again. Apple needed a mini to reach the $699 price point for 5G. As 5G component costs decrease, Apple won’t need to make a tiny 5.4” in order to hit a price point.
If this proves to be the case I wonder if the 2022 phones will be 13 and 13 Max and 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max (I still think there's a good possibility this year will be the 12s). I could see the mini being revived as an SE eventually.

I’d be first in line to buy a 6.7 inch max non pro device. The pro max and plus models have always done very well despite the huge price point. I feel theres be a good place for it at around 899. I sadly doubt it will happen because a lot of people who go for the pro max because they want a big phone, and not for the pro features, would swap losing Apple profit.

It's important to remember Apple essentially had a fire sale going on with the iPhone 5c only one month after it was launched.

Tim Cook said "if you look at year-over-year growth rates and so this would be comparing the 5C to last year. It would be comparing the 4S, which was in the mid-tier. The growth in that sector was the highest growth during the quarter we just finished." Sure, if you burn both ends of the candle on day one, I wouldn't be surprised Apple saw growth. I don't think that's what Apple planned for the 5c though.
Price reduction would definitely have a big effect. But this looks like it was lowered pretty immediately after launch and it doesn’t say how long the price drop lasted, so it doesn’t completely explain the growth in sales that seemed to occur later in the cycle.

iPhone 5c received a mid-cycle update. Apple launched a cheaper 8GB version in March 2014. If you were following the iPhone 5c back then, you would remember most retailers and carriers were almost giving away the device.

For any other normal iPhone, there is no such thing as “slow-burning” sales. iPhone is a high tech device and every model begins aging the moment it launches. One of the few reasons you see growth mid-cycle is if Apple pulls the price lever like they did with 5c.

Ill be disappointed if no future Mini phone is released, but its not like its the end of days or anything so will just adapt and get the most compact iphone that is released. Maybe Apple will reintroduce the 5.8' size as the X, XS and 11 Pro sold very well in the past. If they do, the 5.8 size with the current flat edge design will be more compact than the previous 5.8 phones.

Without the mini, the world as we know it would descend into darkness and chaos. We need the mini to light our way.

I can only hope Apple would be that dumb. A Mini SE that matched the current iPhone but for half the price would cannibalize iPhone sales. The SE 2020 was Apples 2nd best selling phone behind the iPhone 11 last year, and that was with the old design and small display. A 5.4 inch Mini SE with the current design and processor sold at $399 would smash sales. They would cripple it somehow though, Apple is not that dumb.

Based on the previous SE phones being previous gen chassis, with current internals, the next SE 3 will be based on the Xr/11 design with current internals. We wont be seeing a 12 mini SE for at least 4 years yet.

12 mini; the cat is already out of the bag.
when they discontinue support for the iPhone 7 its my next buy
IMO the support for iPhone 7 will be dropped by iOS 16.

So iOS 15 will be the final iOS an iPhone 7 get.

Ok Tim, here is what I’m looking for. I need an iPhone 13 Pro mini, and an iPad Pro mini as my mobility devices. Then for at home on the couch, I need a 15” iPad Pro. Seriously though, we got our son the 12 mini and it’s a great device. If they made a Pro version I’d switch from Max to mini. I have a 12.9 inch iPad and in these times it’s become my main device, so I have less of a need for a larger iPhone now.

Note the ‘eventually’ in there, by the time it comes around the lineup will have moved on again and the feature set of the 12 series will be looking much more pedestrian than now. The smaller size probably also limits its appeal somewhat over making the more mainstream 6.1” 12 into an SE.

God, I hope not! Gimme a Mini Pro already 😁
Oh yes what a super idea. I love my mini and a mini pro would be fabulous. Bought my GF a 12 MAX this past week and I don’t even like to touch it. It weighs a ton. Though I must admit its battery life is nice.I have been waiting forever for Apple to release a phone like the 12 Mini, bought mine first day available in Thailand. The SE doesn’t even compare.

I think that the SE 2nd Gen killed a lot of the 12 mini sales.

People had been waiting for a smaller phone a long time (4 years) and most of the demand was probably filled by the SE2 in spring. Then, only 6 months later, there was no more demand for a higher-cost small iPhone...

I heard the rumors in spring and I had to restrain myself from buying a new SE2.
Boy am I glad I did. I LOVE my new 12 Mini!

Apple cannibalized the 12 Mini sales by releasing the SE2 six months earlier.
And I am pretty sure they know that.
I almost got suckered into buying the SE. I was hating the size and weight of my iPhone X when news of the SE was released. As soon as I saw it I said no way as the large bezels and Touch ID were such a turn off I decided better to stick with my X. If the Mini wasn’t released I would not of even upgraded from the X. The better cameras in the 12 and 12Pro are nice but wasn’t enough to get me to upgrade from the X. Also the pricing of the Mini in my opinion was reasonable and I was happy to get the 128Gb version so I now can carry all my music with me.

Yeah a lot of people here thought the mini should be cheaper due to its size without putting the same latest SoC and camera spec into the equation.

I think the mini’s price fallen into the right gap between the 11 and regular 12.
The SE can be a lot cheaper not just because its size, but also due to last year’s specs and old iPhone 8 design.

The more possible reason why the mini isn’t selling is that the non price sensitive demographics prefers larger screen for their main computing device nowadays.

People yearn for smaller flagship device for years. But turns out it’s just not that many. Especially during the pandemic. Carrying larger device in daily commute is not what people used to complain anymore.

I totally agree. I‘m so happy with Apple that finally makes this smaller yet big enough iPhone. Still sometimes I have A doubts about ditching my XS. It’s funny because when I had XS I wanted to have a smaller iPhone which I can operate with one hand. While is here and I do have this beautiful mini, I sometimes miss writing on it with both hands. A few days ago I was considering buying regular 12 just for checking it is so big for me in daily use. But I got a cold feet because I think that from smaller to bigger you can get used to it far more quickly. 12 would be really not operational with hand for me in the longterm. Strangly, battery on mini isn’t my issue at all. It’s perfect device and I love, even holding it. Just I have a few moments when I would like a bigger one (despite using iPad or MacBook daily). Agree with being a light to a way of many. I’m just thinking if I am in that group too. Sometimes. 😀
We wont be seeing a 12 mini SE for at least 4 years yet.
Agree with this.

I feel like they should have kept the 5.8 size I understand why they didn’t due to the 6.1. I will be keeping hold of my 11 pro for a couple more years at least. In my eyes it is the perfect size.
