It wouldn’t be good for some people’s image if they bought the iPhone XR and rocked it in public bc people will think they don’t have the money to buy the best.

Anyone who wants to show out might be hesitant to buy XR for this reason.

EDIT:

iPhones are ABSOLUTELY a status symbol in other countries. So please don’t say it’s not. In America no, but yes for many places.

In fact, I had heard the gold color was aimed for Asia markets bc it’s considered good luck and symbol of wealth for many.

I'm so fancy, I refuse to use last weeks iPhone, let alone the "budget" model. New phone every week for me! And I only drive Lambugarri's. This weeks Lambugarri, not last weeks model. Pfft... Really? What color's the sky in your world?

Somo of the most succesful and wealthy people I know rock and iPhone 7 or before.......I have even seen a CEO with a SE. It is what suits his needs.

And I have seen low level employees with a X. It is whatever the perceived value is to the specific individual. Some people just don't care about replacing a phone that perfectly meets their needs until it stops doing so, and see no value in trading in for a new model.

I’m NOT saying it’s cheap. I’m saying it’s the “cheap” model meaning it isn’t the high end model.

And I’m not saying anyone SHOULD feel insecure at all.

What I’m saying is that there might be people out there who are like “I want the biggest and baddest out there, so I’ll just get the high end model.”

There are people like that. Maybe they’re insecure, maybe their friends are judegemental, maybe this, or maybe that.

But my point is still the same.

Creating different tiers creates “levels” for some people and those people might be forced to go high end even if they don’t want to or shouldn’t.

Well since your so well off financially why don’t you donate money to “us” little poor people. So we can purchase what pleases EVERYONE ELSE because that’s what really matters in life right? As a social worker I really recommend therapy. Oh I drive a 2016 Honda AND I love it!!!!

Hate to break it to you but what phone you own does not mean crap about your wealth, in fact most people who have alot of money have it because they are smart how they spend their money and a $1000 phone is not a smart way to spend your cash really.

That’s also why a lot of them that don’t spend money wisely are always in trouble with the IRS.

Wow I feel old. I remember when I got the original iPhone and people would stop me all the time to look at it. It was the top end $499 8GB model. Now in 2018 the $749 model is considered embarrassing? What the hell is going on? BTW I have an iPhone X and nobody in public gives a crap.

This is a troll post, right? Either that or you must live in Asia where people care about this kind of stuff.

And believe me no one cares about you're 'image'. You're a schmuck just like the rest of us.

Not to mention people can tell if you have money or not regardless of the phone you carry. Here in America people live in crappy neighborhoods with a crumbling home, weeds in the yard, and holes in the roof, but there is a new BMW in the drive. No thanks. I use my phone to communicate not trying to fool anyone.

I have read about this conversation before with other members. They think a phone is a status thing, and even go so far as to say they judge people by the color of their texts and won't associate with or even date people who don't use Apple. I am sure it's a small group of immature people. They will eventually figure it out. I wouldn't worry.

Anything can become a status symbol.

Bugaboo strollers are status symbols, believe it or not.

Had no idea. Had to look that one up. Been a while since I've needed a Bugaboo stroller.

Regardless of what phone you own, if you think it is a status symbol and that people admire you for it then you have a personality disorder of some sort. Fact.

I think too it has to do with age and maturity. I have tried to explain this to my son many times so it is an issue with me.

I try to tell him buying fancy cars and wearing fancy clothes to give the impression you are well to do is fine, but it's temporary, and many people can see past it. He bought a Range Rover and when he drives it around it looks cool, people might think he's doing well, but yet he can't afford to replace the tires or repair the air conditioner.

I always tell him you want to be rich and flaunt it, fine. Work hard and amass your wealth then buy the cars and clothes. Not the other way around. You are only fooling yourself.

I'm pretty certain people don't associate with or date these types of people anyway ;) .

I am sorry a Phone is not a status symbol, Cars are more of a status symbol then a phone. Its just a phone you use it for X number of years and then you either sell it or trade it in or give it to a family member or friend and get a new one, thats it.

I don't care about status symbols or what anyone else thinks. Nor would I be friends with people who are so shallow.
That's just so incredibly stupid.

Most of the wealthy people I know drive old vehicles, brown bag it to work, don't have nice clothes, etc. Why? They're investing and saving their money for retirement.
The people who feel the need to flaunt it, to have a status symbol, are idiots.
If a girl was in to me for my car I'd dump her. I don't like shallow people and I don't need that kind of stupidity in my life.

Bingo in fact I try to hide the fact I have a new iPhone unless someone asks me.

Do people who drive Toyotas, Hondas and Fords feel self-conscious when they drive to the store knowing that they aren't driving a Mercedes or Lexus?

What a ridiculous thread.

EDIT: I7guy and I appeared to have been posting car analogies at the same time!
Funnily, I suspect that might actually be a thing in Beverly Hills. Seems like the minimum there is BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi or Acura, and a Toyota or Honda would be akin to driving an old beater.

Unless your in high school nobody cares what phone you have. You should buy what one you want and can afford.

But the X is now outdated, boltjames. Which means you'll need to upgrade all 4 of them to the Xs Max to remain king of the hill? :D

I'll never have a Plus sized phone. Those are for teens without televisions in their bedrooms and safe space college students who prefer gaming to girlfriending.

The X is not outdated at all. Remember a year ago when people were saying the Notch was "ugly" and that the X was a "colossal failure" and that Apple was scrambling and was going to discontinue the X design and treat it as a one-and-done anniversary curiosity?

BWAHH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Apple isn't holding a gun to anyone and forcing them to buy their products. People makes choices.

There are tiers in all parts of life...clothes, cars, houses.... you just need to focus on what you need. There is always someone who had more. Buy what you can afford. Otherwise therapy is a good option.

Well said, and I completely agree.

Or for people who like more screen space to scroll less while reading. Or who like dual pane mail, calendar, and contact apps, among others.

Outliers, sure.

I commute to Manhattan daily and work with 1000+ associates in my office of all ages and not once have I seen an iPhone Plus. It's not a phone for an executive. It's not a business tool. It's a gaming/viewing device.

I don't scrutinize people based on what little rectangle they're staring at, I don't even give it much notice. Though, on occasion, just the _act_ of staring at a phone tells me a lot, my favorite being a group/couple/family sitting at a table, with nobody talking to each other, looking down their rectangles ...

I'm certainly not a teenager and haven't been for decades. I like the larger phones. I see a lot of people with them. I have a TV in my bedroom and I also have 2 home theaters in the house. Been married 20 years and my wife also as a plus sized phone. I fail to see what they has to do with anything?

It does everything the non-Plus/Max phones do.

I use it as a business tool. I know numerous professionals — doctors, lawyers, IT — who use one as a business tool.

Perhaps you’re over-generalizing.

Entirely agree. A Phone is a conventional device that is a multi tool and means of communication. By No means, if I see anybody with any specific iPhone or smart phone in general, do I pass judgment based on their livelihood, income, career choice, etc. I have far more valuable things that would indicate a status symbol over a smart phone.

I’m actually shocked to see *some* of the responses in this thread over a smart phone, it’s not that big of a deal, nor should a smart phone be that relevant in someone’s life.

I can only report what I am seeing taking a daily commuter train with 3,000 people a day and working in an office environment with 1,000 people a day. None of the executives are using Plus sized phones. Those that I do see with Plus sized phones are young people playing games and streaming movies.

Thousands of people a day, five days a week, and family outings, trips to the mall, sporting events on weekends in the NYC vicinity. Take that FWIW. YMMV.
