Nope, not really. Developers will take a while to take advantage of that machine and just like Windows aspect will still be around so will the Intel Mac. This is not going to be like PowerPC to Intel as back then there was no reason to keep powerPC as everyone wanted intel as that architecture was (and still is) the standard.
If/when Apple jumps to ARM they will do the transition fast but software will take a while to catch up and I'm sure what you buy now will be good for 5 years if not longer.
Also, you never want to get first version of a product especially like this. Not only that it might have some bugs but the 2nd generation is always 100000x better as the follow up always overshadow the first gen.

So no, iMac now (the 2020 model) is probably the best purchase you can get (pending to see what the reveal is of course)

I understand what you mean but there is a risk of having a machine born "old" and with a limited useful life (in terms of future software compatibility).

Much like the new iMac, Ill get the PS5 regardless of what they show tonight. Exciting month for sure. Most excited for the new iMac though.

I really hope the new machine comes in 27" or larger, I have 24" now and I want bigger, not smaller like the rumored 23". And I hope it ships imediately.

For Fusion Sake, I can see that you have probably never used a touchbar as otherwise you wouldn't be asking for that junk :)

Pretty certain the answer will be no since it's not included in the MacPro.... but just for fun.... Touch Bar for iMac Keyboard?

What do you mean deadly? What parts? Cause I assume you always unplug the computer from the electricity so what is deadly?

The thing with the GPU in (at the very least) most Apple Computers is that they are not a classic graphics card. They are just integrated into the MainBoard with all their RAM spread out and using the iMacs fans for cooling. So having a exchangeable GPU would increase the Bulk of the overall machine by a lot and we both know apple won't have that.

As for the removal of the entire back, i personally would prefer a larger part of the back as some of the parts inside an iMac are actually deadly if you touch them in the wrong moment. There is no good reason not to approach it like that except for "Apple won't have it".
In total all we can hope for is a RAM door anyway as the machine likely brings T2 SSDs and makes those non user upgradable just because we can't get that hardware. If you could just remove a huge back plate it would impact the design less, you could probably build it around the cuts they might have to make for ventilation. But i somehow doubt they will.

Yeah...when Apple intro'd the touch strip... (Pathetic...crumbs...mere crumbs... 'We're not doing touch screen on the mac...but we're doing this little fiddly micro strip...and jacking up the prices of our Macbooks...')

...and M$ gave the full on 'TOUCH' with M$ Surface Desktop. Head to head. M$ won that. Hands down.

I was never more embarrassed to be a Mac fan.

The touch bar and £-$ exchange rate changes of 2016 (cannot remember what happened that year...) lead to hugeeee increases in the price of MBPs here in the UK. That was the nail in the coffin for Mac laptops as far as i am concerned. Apple have slightly redeeemed themselves with the 16in version.

I would be highly disappointed if they announced the 23 inches iMac only. I have a 27 inches Thunderbolt Display in my setup and I want to upgrade it with at minimum another 27” Display. Thus I really like the rumoured new design! I hope they will do like they did with the MBP, when they first introduced the 16 inches and only after the low tier 13”.

Now here's a crazy thought: What if the complete back of the iMac can be taken off, and you can access the RAM, SSD, GPU and CPU!

GPUs are soldered on iMacs so... And to be fair, even when Apple used "socketed" nVidia GPUs on iMacs back in the day, nVidia didn't really release new models in that form factor so the upgrade options were effectively non-existent which is probably why Apple went soldered as it is more reliable.

It would be interesting if they did the following:

27” iMac (Current) would be discontinued.

23” iMac (Redesign) introduced to replace the entire iMac lineup.

This would give more reason for people to get the iMac Pro if you wanted the bigger display. A redesigned iMac Pro would launch Later this year, perhaps 30” or 32” to match the Pro Display XDR size.

The rumors are the 2020 iMac Pro refresh this fall will be getting a 27" MiniLED display so unlikely it will be larger.

I don’t know with rumors of a 23” iMac redesign, only 1 new Euroasian model filing, and supply running low on 27” iMac. I think they may introduce only the 23”.

Discontinued the 21.5” and 27” iMac completely. Bring down the price of the iMac Pro 27” And offer tiers.

Could be something like this:

23” iMac Low Spec $1299

23” iMac Middle Spec $1499

23” iMac High Spec $1799

27” iMac Pro Low Spec $2499

27” iMac Pro Middle Spec $3999

27” iMac Pro High Spec $4499

Then in FALL 2020 update design of 27” iMac Pro, maybe update display to 30”?

They don't have any GPU to refresh the iMac Pro now. So it will be either a dead product or they will announce the refresh for fall 2020 using RDNA2.

I never used a touch bar and i was not asking for one.

When you open up an iMac there is what usually is inside a "Power Brick" all exposed. Theres some components you should absolutely not touch with bare hands even if unplugged. Just as there are when you open your TV for example.

I've got a feeling this might be on the cards.

Hopefully not. Depends on what we're getting for an iMac Pro at £2500. Better value than the iMac Pro at £5k. (IF an 8 core, SSD, 16 gigs of ram etc and a 5700 pro are standard.)

Macbook 13 incher. £1800 top end.
Macbook 16 incher. £2400. Entry.

I remember when you could get a 15 inch Macbook for way less than that.

Hope this doesn't have implications for the new 23 inch and 27(?) iMacs. Price wise.

Azrael.

If it turns out that it's a 29/32 inch "iMac Pro" coming out later in the year (October?) and a single 23" iMac coming out now - I can handle that but the starting price cannot be £/$5000 as that's absurd. Apple are fully aware how many people enjoy that larger display, hopefully they can see that it's not just "pro" users.

Does Apple update the Eurasian database if they do spec bumps to an existing model with no physical changes?

And for everyone talking about a 29-32" 2020 iMac Pro, remember the supply chain rumors are that it's MiniLED display will remain 27".

Nice, I like Luke, very smart. I have subscribed to his channel before.

Conflating rumours, I'd guess.

We can't rule out more $$$ for the new design iMac. See posts above. But not £5k.

I agree this makes some sence out of the rumor of a new 23” iMac and the apparet clearing out of the 27” iMacs. I’m wondering about the internals of those iMac Pros vs the current iMac Pros.

The iMac Pro will rot on the vine...until it gets the update later this year or early next.

Perhaps just as Apple sold the legacy Trash Can for big coin even though it was ancient and we knew a new Mac Pro was coming.

Well...Apple doesn't have a problem selling old stuff for high prices. Full stop.

23" and 29"/30"?

I hope so.

I think that's a good look for the iMac line.

Same foot print. Boosted screen size. And losing the chin and bezels will make it appear even bigger (always good...)

It would make the iMac's killer feature...far more expansive (and hopefully not far more expensive...)

For me, the iMac's main feature, it's screen...could do with a size boost at both sizes.

C'mon Apple. Let's get it done. 'Do it.'

EveryMac.com's "Tapered Edge" Aluminum iMac Q&A answers questions about the Aluminum iMac models released between 2012 and 2019. These models have a sharp tapered edge around the display rather than flat sides and are sometimes called the iMac "Slim" models. Later models with higher resolution displays sometimes are called the iMac "Retina" or iMac "4K" or "5K" models. Models released between 2012 and 2017 can be identified collectively by model numbers A1418 and A1419 whereas 2019 models can be identified collectively by model numbers A2116 and A2115.

The latest model that has been added is A2330 which I am assuming is the new 23". I suppose it is possible for them to keep the identifier numbers the same since they have done this before throughout the years (including years where there has been significant updates) but it's a guessing game at this stage. A new size would definitely require a new model number but a significant redesign of an existing size? It's anyone's guess.
