Yeah, I agree. That was nice.

However, one thing I hate about it. It was hyped as America launch (which in essence is the main problem with USA these days).
Elon Musk is from South Africa and if it wasn't for him this thing would probably not happened.
Him and his team achieved something amazing. If it was for Nasa I'm sure even the space suits would still be similar to what it was 50 or so years ago.
I watched the stream and couldn't help (actually i was getting annoyed by it) that there was more focus on "America" than on the actual goal. It was insane!

If you create boarders you create just that. Same for racial and other discrimination.
The whole stream should have been handled differently. They should have replaced word "America" for "humans". Be inclusive not only for those that work in NASA or SpaceX that are originally from other countries (or their parents were) but also for everyone else. To me, that was the overall wrong narrative. Unfortunately, I don't see that changing anytime soon as American system is so broken that it will take generations and good people to turn it around.

Its a shame though. Our civilization could be in much better shape if the world leaders were better people.

Greed, corruption etc. is hardly going to move humanity forward. Sad sad reality ;-(
America will always big America up. I just mentally tuned out when Jim Bridenstine said 'we're going to launch American astronauts, on American rockets, from American soil again'., which was rather often. Nevertheless, I think it will reignite people's interest in space, which is brilliant. Looking forward to the next 5 years.

Back on topic.... Does anyone think Apple could announce the iMac this week, so they can focus more of software next week? Given today they announced something, it is possible they have a few things lined up this week.

Yeah, I think the prospect to colonize Mars is actually quite exciting. Exciting times ahead :)

I used to feel that way, but Apple is pushing users toward their services, the vast majority of which I have no interest in. Also, do not feel like paying them more money on a subscription scale.

I personally don't feel too much pushed into paying for their services. But this may vary with personal perception.

For example, Notes used to be a decent app, but now to do anything robust (including using the Apple Pencil) you need an iCloud account.

You have to be online now to see what is stored in your iDevice, So Apple can track you. Look at my iTunes account and you’ll see my $$$$ worth of purchases.

But for anything at Apple you need an iCloud account. I don't think Apple tracks *you*, but your general usage. Data is anonymized and I personally think Apple is the best in Silicon Valley to anonymize data it collects from users.

I cannot use iDevices plugged into my Mac unless I upgrade software and “trust” the computer.

But this is fine. New versions comes with security fix and usually less bugs than before. And this is a trust mechanism, a security feature. This is perfectly fine.

I store my media locally and on drives.

I do too. I have a NAS for this. And it works perfectly within the Apple ecosystem. I mount it as a SMB share and that's it. Audirvana is a wonderful audio player, way more powerful than anything Apple could ever build and works perfectly fine with your personal music library stored on remote drives. Don't have to be on iCloud, or you are not limited to the Music app and paid subscription.

I think you dramatize a bit... If you use your devices the way Apple wants it (using iCloud for example), it still work like magics. I hardly ever had a problem in the last few years with iCloud or any services from Apple.

But I use Spotify. And it works with all my devices, including my Watch (okay, it took time for this one).

I though it was more a developer point of view.

I agree with both your points. I have no additional Apple service (music, extra iCloud storage, news+, tv+, etc). Maybe it is just because I don't touch the apps relating to those, but it doesn't bother me at all that Apple has these services. Spotify till I die!

Damn, right. I follow SpaceX very closely. Love seeing what they do. I may also watch all their launches too....

I personally have only the 50 GB of iCloud storage. And TV+ free for one year since I bought an iPad Pro this winter. But won't renew it because I don't have time to watch this (and content is limited).

I'd pick up News+ thought. But yeah, Spotify till I die too. God bless the "Connect" feature.

I guess we aren’t getting a chin afterall and it looks like the traditional iMac stand.

TV+ is of no interest to me (neither is Netflix or Amazon Prime video tbh), so I will never subscribe to that.

Yes! The connect feature is the main reason I love Spotify, alongside the song recommendations, which is how I find all my music now.

Fine with me. A chin is not necessary. What is special about the lower bezel that means it should be thicker? A small bezel can still house an Apple logo if they want to.

That leaked image is labelled "Mac" not iMac. Might as well just refer to a mac pro.

It's one of the biggest downsides of Apple tv that there is no audio out. I am running on a old stereo i got from my dad, pure 80s high fi glory... and in the end i essentially double by buying a Teufel Raumfeld Connector to get Spotify on my Stereo... it's so silly. And since i am on Apple devices only, i can't even get Audible to stream to my Stereo since the connector only supports googles mirroring but not AirPlay... so essentially if i wanted to listen to an audio book via my Stereo i would need to have my TV on just because Apple took a dump on one audio out cable connection.
Theres also the option of buying a 20€ BT dongle for the Teufel Raumfeld, but that will get every sound to the stereo.

Whenever i see these companies talk ******** about being environmentally friendly i have to think of things like these. Apple Glasses supposedly won't have Audio since Apple still wants to sell you AirPods. Apple TV probably has no Audio out because they want to force HomePod on you. (i hate these speakers btw. i have a google home mini because it was free and bah gawd is that voice talking everything back to you annoying **** - but you can't turn it of because marketing wants you to have a relationship with it.....)

Some good points for sure. I wish they would also wait until software etc. is ready.

Hardware: had a fusion drive fail out of the gate, system freezes, faulty Bluetooth, and now ports.

I had very few problems with iTunes.

The TV app has all these settings I do not want (sports, etc.)

To say nothing of my mishaps with iDevices and iOS.

In some respects, I realize I may no longer be Apple’s target audience, that is fine. I am glad folks have no issues, but after 20+ years of being able to do what I want with my Macs and love it, I think I am nearing the end of my Mac usage.

definitely agree that Apple has a tendency to try and instantly anchor you to the ecosystem the moment you buy an Apple device... not sure if I’d phrase that as locked down as I still have the liberty to move away, just the longer you stay the more difficult it gets I guess...

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

I don't see anything about America there. All the America stuff did jar, especially as I recently watched For All Mankind on Apple TV+. This isn't a spoiler as it is the basic premise of the series, but Russia gets to the moon first and the cosmonaut equivalent one small step quote is about Russia. A major character comments it would have been different if America had got their first, which of course is what really happened, and it was different.

At least Apple is getting better with how it treats the rest of the world compared with America. Countries such as the UK now tend to get new devices the same day as USA, which wasn't always the case, although we do lag on a number of services, which seems to be Apple's focus now. Apple TV has much less effort into ensuring it get all the content apps. Last time I looked BBC's iPlayer was the only TV channel to have an app. Apple Maps is far less fully featured, and they cannot even spell many street names right. St is a common way to start a street name in the UK, but Apple always has it as "Saint", yet does not do any other names phonetically (and the "ai" is silent anyway).

Rant mode over. It's now less than a week to the keynote. I'm looking forward to that even more than the space programme.

I would not neccecerly call it locked down. Plenty of functions you would not have with another computer. I really dig other things like for example being able to copy a text on my iMac and past it right away on my iPhone. Thats neat little things that will only work in some sort of eco system.
The dirt starts when you lock out things. Like you need an apple watch to "fill these amazing rings", something that you could already do with a android phone years ahead of Apple watch even existing. That might be "good" marketing, but it's just not nice. And a decent amount of what apple dos is just not nice, it's not customer first. Just think about how they had to be sued into replacing iPad batteries way back, look at how they got sued for having planed obsolescence back with the iPod and just recently in france by slowing down everyones old phone without asking.

On the flip side, macOS Catalina 10.15.1 beta did show a MBP with thinner bezels and that is what we got when the 16" MBP was released shortly thereafter and the iPhone X, iPhone XS Max and 2018 iPad Pro designs all leaked due to their icons being in pre-release versions of Apple operating systems.

Not saying this means it is a slam dunk, but I do consider valid possible evidence of a new design.

I am not saying it's not gonna happen. It's just strange that many of the news reports are not mentioning it not being labelled with an i before the Mac.
Well, in less than a week we probably know.

Apple might have yet to properly name it "iMac" - or deliberately did not name it "iMac" to try an obfuscate it from people running keyword searches against the code.

As for why media folks are omitting the part about it not explicitly saying "iMac" it's probably a mix of just assuming that because only the iMac has a screen that it must therefore be an iMac and confirmation bias. :)

Great, smaller bezels and the same old stand, after 10 years. Awesome, Apple.

If a new one adds $1000 to the price, I'm okay with the old one. o_O

What I am not okay with is not having an option to add a VESA mount after purchase, but instead commit to it at build time (I mean there are third party options that mount to the stand - I have one - but god are they inelegant). It really needs to be an option like on the iMac Pro (and priced reasonably like it is on the XDR) so that way the existing stand's limitations can be addressed with a third-party VESA-compliant option.

Dude, what is wrong with you? New iMac update has been rumoured for weeks. Redesign was part of those rumours. There is more and more evidence pointing to a redesign and yet, you come here and again do your thing.
Sure, they will represent Mac Pro with a display icon. Out of all scenarios you just had to pick the least likely one.
Why?

You really don't want the redesign, do you? You've been against it for a while especially when talking about bezels.
Oh dear oh dear. Let us have fun as most likely, you are wrong. The amount of rumours are too big to not get iMac next week and redesign along with it. So if you don't want to be part of this then don't be 'that guy'

Its not Mac Pro. In fact, if you wanted be negative (as you often are) but constructive at the same time you could have said that it COULD BE a new Apple TV (based on the leak with tvOS getting faceid too) That would actually be more plausible as otherwise how would tvOS use faceID? (The label would be misleading but the icon would be appropriate)

Don't you think?

Well, what can we say. Macrumors warned you so maybe sell it and get the new one if it gives you more than what you have now? But buying iMac so late in the cycle always has this risk so I'm sure you probably knew it before hand

This is going to really piss me off. I just brought an iMac last month..............smh

As a Yank, I totally agree with what you said. You have to understand, however, that it's an election year in the Colonies. So the politicians are hogging all of the media bandwidth. Also, we had to wave the flag a few times, just to make us all feel good about something. The clown living in our White House has really made life miserable over here, COVID or no.

Something as simple as Apple FINALLY announcing a new iMac (hopefully +27", SSD-only, rotating screen, etc. Azrael will fill in the rest), will really make me happy... for a while. Waiting for it to arrive, and seeing the bill, on the other hand, will not. But it will last another 8-10 years. So it's a "good investment", right? Yeah, that's what I'll tell my wife! :)

mind your Tone.

DrRadon - I think what Freida was trying to say is that quite a few of your posts lately seem to 'minimize' the opinions of others on this board. Sometimes it seems like: Joe says he hopes to have a modern looking car with power windows, is red in color, and has CarPlay. You return and insinuate that his desire is unimportant, saying that it doesn't matter if a car has power windows, is black, and has no radio - as long as you can drive it from Point A to Point B.

Everyone on here has an opinion, and every option has value. Although I worked in IT network and desktop support for over 25 years, I'm probably like the "99% of people" that don't push my iMac to it's limits. But I love to read what Freida, Az, Gusp, and YOU write. We all learn from each other. You guys (and gals!) make me a better Mac user.

I hope for the day when Apple will learn from ALL OF US! In the mean time, here's hoping for that shiny new iMac with all the bells and whistles! Or not. :)

Yeah! You've said it way more eloquently than I did. :)

That's all very good but why am I starting to feel like I need a modern looking red car with power windows and CarPlay? 😰
