The 'evidence' for a major redesign is really pretty thin.

For
+Rumours and tweets
+Length of time since last redesign (12+ years)
+27" iMac stocks are low in some countries (but not all)

Against
-Its Apple
-Only the one new model listed in database
-ARM coming soon (2021?) so why redesign before major platform shift
-GPU change to NAVI2 coming end of the year
-Gen10 Intel just released, possibly thermally more problematic than Gen9
-Current Geopolitical and other issues a negative timing-wise for release

Actually most signs pointed towards a specs bump until the hype train got rolling.
They could keep the old design and kill fusion drive.

Once you remove the HDDs, add the T2 and have to deal with hotter components with a new cooling system, it is by definition a redesign.

Furthermore, there are no rumours about a refresh. They all (true or false, we will see, but they all do) talk about a redesign.

A scary story while we wait... My SO has used various Macbooks for about 15 years. A few weeks ago I realized she didn't know that you can use two fingers to scroll through pages

She's been manually selecting and dragging the side thingy when scrolling. For 15 years!

This is honestly one of the craziest things I've ever heard
What... did I just read.

New twitter rumour info (click link and see comments for extra info):
- Redesign, with no chin (they comment on the size in a response)
- SSDs
- Same RAM door
- Same current 5sh1t iMac stand (no adjustment)
- No info on prices or sizing (they are working on getting info on the latter)
- No FaceID

PS. the account was created June 2020, so... take with a pinch of salt as usual.

ok guys, i am off the hype train and this is not a move to anti-jinx us. The latest Gurman report has really shaken my confidence in a redesign. Hope is still there, obviously and still looking forward to tomorrow.

Mmm maybe someone who wants a bit of visibility? 🤔

I dont see why "updates to iMac" is being read as suggesting a redesign isnt coming. Update = bringing up to date. A redesign is considered an "update" in my book. Bezels are relics so they will go. Cooling method updated. Components updated. All good.

Mark Gurman:

“The software updates will set the stage for a range of new hardware devices also launching this year, including a new Apple Watch, four redesigned iPhones, the new HomePod and Apple TV box, as well as updates to the iMac and MacBook Pro. The company also plans its first pair of over-ear headphones as well as an accessory for finding physical objects, which will integrate with the new software.”

So just minor update to the iMac?
He said "updates" not minor. Updates are updates. We have rumors of considerable updates. Only one day to find out.

It would make sense for a complete redesign to happen with the ARM iMac. I dunno anymore. If it is just a spec update im out.
The rumors are too solid. I don’t think it will be just a spec update. And why would they wait for Arm to transition to the new form factor? They might as well bring it out now with Intel still onboard. Makes no difference. My guess is Apple has had this “new design” on the bench behind closed doors for a long time.

For anyone thinking the iMac redesign is a no-go because of upcoming ARM CPU update:

I too think a redesign now makes sense rather than waiting for Arm. It means they get interest and sales purely because it’s a new design, but then also get sales when Arm happens.

I don't think this will affect iMac, iMac Pro or Mac Pro for a few years. The iMac isn't going to go ARM from the start. And we don't even know when in 2021. Apple will launch it with the MacBook Air. Might not come to an iMac for a couple of years.

The iMac redesign has been rumoured for months now. Was originally due in March. I can see a redesign coming soon, just whether it will happen at WWDC is the big question.

WWDC is normally reserved for developer talk and expect to see news on iOS, OS X, other OS (Apple TV etc) and quite a lot of emphasis on this ARM transition.

What I'm not expecting is an iMac redesign or much talk about other Apple kit at WWDC. But I do see a new design coming, but don't expect it to be revolutionary. Just thinner bevels, SSD and like others have said, more worryingly, non-configurable RAM.

The problem is that rumors are just rumors and we all can interpret them incorrectly. At the moment, the situation is such that we can get

- minor update of iMacs with improved CPU/GPU, total SSD and +- other little things
- A new trial/test iMac on ARM - mb that is what everyone is talking about in their rumors.

In this case, the situation is stalemate. ARM iMac is a dark horse, from which it is not clear what to expect, and minor updated Intel iMacs were already born at the sunset of their life path.

Indeed, it is likely that the iMac will be the first Mac with the ARM processor: for application developers and programmers who are more comfortable working with the new system for the benefit of all.

Nobody here has ever treated rumours as reliable news, though it is the only thing we have since sometimes we don't even have them at all.
All rumours have been posted on the forum. None leads to a simple CPU/GPU refresh.

What are your sources?

😁

But seriously, perhaps it was ready to go but COVID changed everything.
Apple has to factor in the current economic and unemployment situation. Add BLM, policing, and the US elections, are people (other than us here), really going to be talking about the new cool chin-less iMac?

My guess is it’s pushed back until early 2021 and be ARM based.
