A refresh of the design now. And a further refresh down the line for Mac Arm.

Azrael.

That's what I want to happen. I'm just not convinced. They save money by keeping the same design. The Mac Pro is different because its specs were outdated. The iMac can stay up-to-date spec-wise by simply changing the internals. A redesign isn't necessary.

I Hope we See a 27 inch iMac tomorrow :/

Me too. I don't see any reason why not.

Even this...

It doesn't change anything. At somepoint Apple were going to introduce Mac ARM. They must be very confident about their consumer power efficiency and performance if they're launching late this year or early next. Once you announce it, Osborne sales drag on Intel Macs. They effectively become legacy hardware for consumers and developers. Though, wit a significant installed base in terms of Intel Macs.

Very aggressive on the heels of a Mac ARM preview at WWDC. So, in the fall of this year. That would line up with some of what we've been hearing for the 23 incher. And that would start to make sense.

They still need to sell iMac something in the mean time. And that means an Intel iMac refresh. At the least. And, for me, a 27 inch redesign.

But I think this has implications for the consumer to prosumer models. eg. Macbook Pro 13 (and Air...) and iMac 23 inch 'Air'. They are £1250-£1300 products. That's consumer territory. And with the Macbook Air. £999-£1100. Possibly a price realignment to make adoptions of Mac ARM quicker. Aligned lower, that is.

*shrugs.

Still looking forward to tomorrow. :)

The only people convinced about anything are Apple.

The iMac specs are out dated.

The design refresh is necessary.

When he says he’s going to be as surprised as the rest of us, I don’t think he knows anything here.

He may have on iPhones and iPads but not on WWDC or iMac.

He’s just protecting his reputation at this point and covering all the bases.

Agreed, Satchmo.

He's gas lighting.

Was he the one who said 'March?'

9 to 5’s article says this only confirms Kuo’s report that we’re getting new iMacs tomorrow. Guess we’ll see in 24 hours! I’m hoping for an Intel 30” iMac either way.

Looks like this WWDC will suck 🤥

Some have. But the proof is in the pudding.

This year's is going to be seismic because of the Mac ARM announcement alone. (The devs will need some 'preview' kit to get working on Mac ARM?)

The iMacs are a bonus. Likely the 27 incher. With a sexy new design.

(...and the Mac ARM 23 inch 'Air' late this year? Or early next.)

So that's two 'hardware' based announcements.

:D

I'm hoping for that 30 inch iMac.

Bezel reduction...display boost? I'd buy that. I'm buying anyway. 27 or 30.

But it's time to reduce the oil tanker bezels.

It's not a stretch for the iMac to be WWDC tomorrow. It's out of stock and old tech...old design. The product needs a shot in the arm. (Pun intended...) The Mac Pro, Macbook Pro have had design changes. The iMac is the odd one out. Even the Mac Mini biscuit tin got a lick of grey paint.

There have been tons of rumours about the iMac. It's wayyy over due. We heard very little about a redesign last year.

This would really be problematic for me as I am hoping for atleast one iteration of this newly designed iMac with an Intel processor. I highly doubt many of the apps I use for work will be translated to ARM for years.

There will still be the used market for iMacs/Macs. And a recent one would last you well past this ARM transition.

However, I'm sure Apple will iterate the 27 inch iMac (as they did the Mac Pro...) with a substantial refresh that will see their Intel installed base 'over the line' of the next several years. New design has been highly rumoured.

As for your apps. I hear what you're saying. I have Z-Brush, Lightwave3D, Poser Pro 12, my Affinity Suite amongst others. Transitions create 'pro app' uncertainty.

However, I'm sure Apple will find a way to £££ help devs along.

With the Intel Mac 27 incher. Buy that and it will last you an easy 4-5 years over the course of a speedy Mac ARM transition.

Even Adobe made it over to Intel with the last transition. They're 'here' now with iPad which suggests that a 'full' fat Mac ARM transition will more doable and they won't be late as last time.

Different beast, different transition this time.

Again "coming later 2020 or early 2021" is just for the 24" ARM imac

The Macbook Pro 13 and iMac 23 incher make perfect sense for Mac ARM. They're pretty much consumer products at £1250-1300.

And, allegedly, the iMac 23 is going to be more affordable. Whatever that means.

It means 'aggressively' priced to drive adoption so the dev's can 'go there.'

I wonder how the delay lines up with the imac pro late year release rumor. Hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait. ugg

We know the Mac Pro and iMac Pro are the 'heavy' weights (though I laugh at the entry Mac Pro spec...) of the Mac line.

They're going to get Mac ARM later.

That means a substantial refresh for 'Pro' Intel (and installed...) customers.

Apple still has to serve these customers through the transition.

Ergo.

'We have some great PPC products coming...and some great Intel products on the horizon.' Paraphrase Steve Jobs.

Apple still have to sell stuff now. Mac ARM is highly likely to quite ready for the 'Heavy' Mac Products.

But even I'm pretty confident that an A14X 'Mac' based ARM chip will beat the snot out of the consumer Intel cpus on single thread and multi-core.

Those 1st Mac ARM laptops and 23 inch iMac later this year/early next will be able to hold their heads up high. I'm expecting great things from them.

That won't diminish the Intel Mac Pros or iMac Pros. Different customers.

I think Apple has never made a good mouse. On the other hand, their trackpads are excellent.

Apple had a mixed history with mice. Even under Jobs. The puck being innovative but...irritating in practice of ergonomics. The same with the 'magic mouse' which was designed with people who have 'flat hands.'

The Magic Mouse is very 'heavy' to use in clicks. RSI heavy to click. And try gaming with it... (*hand cramp...*)

I don't quite agree with 'never.' A rare (good) example...

I did like the Mac tower mouse. The clear (see through) bar of soap single click mouse. Felt good in hand. Whole hand to click. Looked good. Felt good. 'Light' to click.

But as a matter of course...Apple mice have been poor. This from the company that popularised their use. *shakes head.

How hard is it to design a mouse that fits in the snug of your hand? There is clear daylight there. Even M$ can design a mouse, Apple. Ironic.

I still believe we get “refreshed” iMacs tomorrow (the ones that have been ready since March), and a preview of “redesigned” Arm iMacs shipping later.

Edit: Kuo’s actual wording is “‌ARM‌ ‌iMac‌ will be equipped with the all-new form factor design and a 24- inch display. Apple will launch the refresh of existing Intel ‌iMac‌ in 3Q20 before launching the ‌ARM‌ ‌iMac‌.”

Same design also gives a sense of security. It says "Nothing to worry about, you can feel safe, it's the same old good iMac despite the new CPU". :)

Exactly.

It's reassurance to the customer.

Changing the software is disruptive enough.

One thing at a time.

MaxWeinbach is the second big name to corroborate no hardware story :(

He better be correct or his 'big' name will be in tatters.

My thinking for tomorrow based on the latest rumors:

  • Apple will unveil a new ARM iMac that is 24" and will follow the iPad Pro design aesthetic. They will not announce a shipping date for consumers, but may mention a general quarter when they will be available for developers.
  • The 21.5" and 27" iMac are staying with the same form factor and will see spec-bumps (Gen9/Gen10 CPUs and RDNA 1/2 GPUs) either "real soon" (coming days or weeks) or "soon" (coming months).
  • The iMac Pro will stay in the same form factor and will see spec-bumps (W-2200 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs) and MiniLED by the end of this year or early next year.

Surely you must love the mouse with the charging port on the bottom? That's genious. It's made to force you to take a break. Seriously, Apple's worst design blunder ever.

Anyway, starting to seem like this might be an announce and wait.. Typical for Apple. Hate those... oh well...

...says he may have a pic just before the event tomorrow...

Yeah...that sucks. Charging port on the bottom. How the hell did that get past Ive. Asleep at the wheel?

It's an announce and wait. But not 'too long.' eg. Shipping in July 'some time.'

That's a rational post, CWallace. And sensible. :)

It brings clarity to the 'interpretations' of the rumours. In a common sense kind of way.

Rumours. It's the five men with blind folds describing an elephant by touch alone.

A Mac ARM is essential for Dev's. They're the ones porting mission critical software for the Mac ARM customer base.

I can live with substantial spec boosted iMacs.

New design. Old design. It's academic for me. (Though I'd prefer the former.) I have to buy.

It's ok to be excited by new iMacs and the transition to Mac ARM. (Least ways, I am.)

The Lord says the redesign is coming ;)

A new design is coming. Either on Mac ARM 23 incher. Or Intel Macs. Or both.

Tomorrow is clarity. I welcome it. (Baths in sunlight...)

Hopefully Prosser is wrong, but we all know how WWDC usually goes. So many years I've been disappointed after only software being shown. Still, a couple of things really stand out in favor for the iMac being shown.

* "Hello"-invite.
* Shipping delays, although it doesn't mean much IMO.
* All the iMac rumors. We all know it's coming, question is just when. Apple will definitely (100 %) use stage time to introduce the first major redesign in 10 years, meaning it's now or Sept/Oct.

The rumors are too solid. I don’t think it will be just a spec update. And why would they wait for Arm to transition to the new form factor? They might as well bring it out now with Intel still onboard. Makes no difference. My guess is Apple has had this “new design” on the bench behind closed doors for a long time.

Yeah. If they're going with a new design. There's no reason for it not to happen because of Intel vs Mac ARM.

Apple are 1.5 trillion company. They have Intel Macs to sell now and Mac ARM products to sell later.

I too think a redesign now makes sense rather than waiting for Arm. It means they get interest and sales purely because it’s a new design, but then also get sales when Arm happens.

Yes. It's about the here and now.

As well as the future. They can co-exist.

£££ either way.

😁

But seriously, perhaps it was ready to go but COVID changed everything.
Apple has to factor in the current economic and unemployment situation. Add BLM, policing, and the US elections, are people (other than us here), really going to be talking about the new cool chin-less iMac?

My guess is it’s pushed back until early 2021 and be ARM based.

If we're awaiting world peace to have a WWDC event or new hardware...we'd never do anything. The world continues. Corporations will still keep taking money through the tills despite all their virtue signalling.

They key to happiness is to do what you love doing.

Azrael.

It would make sense for a complete redesign to happen with the ARM iMac. I dunno anymore. If it is just a spec update im out.

Been saying that for at least a month now. I’ll take a redesign if it’s not bad but saving the update for Arm would not surprise me at all.

Late fall is very aggressive. Early 2021 seems likely to me.

After all this, imagine if poor Azrael has to buy a spec bump 27in iMac. Ouch....

Also, are we talking about iMacs or Brexit here....? ;)

A 'substantial' spec boost it will be. Any move to i9s, 5700s, SSDs and 16 gig of ram has no shame in that. (And for my own personal perspective...extremely substantial compared to where my 2012 iMac is. A step up to a 5k screen will be a lot kinder on my eyes. Soothing water by comparison.)

As for Brexit. As Paddy Ashdown once said, 'Democracy has spoken.' (Better that than Britain being the annex to the German chancellor...)

We shouldn't be afraid of sunlight and bright new tomorrows. iMac 'ARM' or otherwise.

Hahahaha, I forgot about that little magnetic remote 😀

That mouse was awful though. The little scroll ball thingy was really susceptible to dirt ingress.

I had that mouse as well. The little scrolly ball (on my 24 inch iMac...) had quite an 'intimate' feel... :p

If there is no new iMac announced tomorrow, im thinking I will update my iPad Pro to the new 2020 version (from my current 2017 iPad Pro) instead.

minor updated Intel iMacs were already born at the sunset of their life path.

The current iMacs are so old...that any move to SSD, 16 gigs of ram, 5700 gpu and an 8 core - 10 core cpus...will be substantial, regardless of design.

They are 'born at the sunset of their life path.'

How true. And poetic. An epitaph to squandered opportunity. (Though the iMac Pro is what the iMac could have been...)

We may yet see that final 'hurrah', if only specs wise.

Any 23 inch Mac ARM iMac 'Air' will bury the 21 incher. I feel confident in that. And maybe Apple will show off this.

There will be hardware to morrow.

The ARM announcement IS hardware.

And they still need to sell 27 inch iMacs which are currently stocking out BTO wise.

The latter is highly likely to be previewed and available to devs then. To port apps?

And the 3Q20 is July? ie. 'New' iMacs shipping in July?

So there will be 'a' new design. And there will be 'new' iMacs. As the 'twins' 21 and 27 update in pairs.

...and the Mac ARM transition for the consumer in the fall or early '21.

So 'no hardware' doesn't make sense to me. As the Mac ARM announcement is inherently 'hardware' based alongside the software push. Mac ARM hardware being previewed makes sense. You need to know how it's going to perform, how to port for it...and a 'rig' to 'do' the porting on.

I had a dream last night and saw WWDC, and it was only an iMac Pro spec bump with new xeons and rdna1. lol..

Looks like my nightmare will come true after today's reports. I never trust that greedy salesman Mr. Cook when it comes to Macs and redesign but after all these rumors, I was on the train too..
Nevermind, since I hate and know Tim Cook's behaviors, I have already bought a base 2019 5K iMac in February and was planning to sell and buy a new one if they'll come with a really but really properly cooled hardware.

If there is no new iMac announced tomorrow, im thinking I will update my iPad Pro to the new 2020 version (from my current 2017 iPad Pro) instead.

You're totally one of the customers Tim Cook wants. Also, 2020 iPad Pro is a dead born product. A12Z isn't different from A12X on the 2018 model while the 5nm cpus will become a reality within a few months. We have a 2017 iPP too and it's still going strong. I simply wouldn't do what you're planning.
