According to Wikipedia "Apple's Intel Transition was became public knowledge at the 2005 WWDC. Apple's initial press release indicated the transition would begin by June 2006, and finish by the end of 2007, but it actually proceeded much more quickly. The first generation Intel-based Macintoshes were released in January 2006 with Mac OS X 10.4.4 Tiger, and Steve Jobs announced the last models to switch in August 2006, with the Mac Pro available immediately and with the Intel Xserve available by October 2006.[2] The Xserve servers were available in December 2006.[3]

Apple released Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" on August 28, 2009 as Intel-only, removing support for the PowerPC architecture. It is also the last Mac OS X version that supports PowerPC-based applications,[4] as Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion" dropped support for Rosetta on July 20, 2011."

So on June 22, 2020 Apple announces its transition to ARM. It will begin by June 2021 and finish in 2022 but the first ARM Macs will be released in Jan 2021 and the last ones in Dec 2021. Apple will release ARM-only macOS in Aug 2024 and drop support for Intel emulation in July 2026?

The article on 9 to 5 Mac seems to fly in the face of all of this. Says Kuo thinks we’re getting a newly designed intel iMac tomorrow.

"Fyi in Canada, 27" iMacs are available for delivery on the 10th of July, whatever that means..."

8th July here in Oz so really only a couple of weeks. I wouldn't read too much in to that, supply chains are probably still recovering from disruptions, and it's a popular model.

Mac Pro is showing a similar delivery time (6/7) and no-one is predicting an update to that.

I said in another thread I think that’s just their (incorrect) interpretation of Kuo’s wording.. but we don’t get to see Kuo’s actual report so who knows.

Agreed. I think that 9to5 article is poor reporting where it said "Kuo confirms that an all-new design iMac is launching imminently, and it will apparently be Apple’s last new Mac featuring an Intel CPU."

Macrumours appear to have, and I would expect to have, translated Kuo's report verbatim, or at the very least accurately reported his comments.

Kuo said Apple will launch the refresh of existing Intel ‌iMac‌ in 3Q20 BEFORE launching the ‌ARM‌ ‌iMac‌, so in my opinion it is wrong for 9to5 to conflate the new design with the last intel CPU. It's a refresh that is imminent according to Kuo, not the all new design (24"); which Kuo by implication predicts 4Q20 at the earliest.

The China Times report from April stated that Apple plans to introduce a lower priced 23-inch iMac in the second half of 2020. Combining Kuo's statement and the China Times report could mean that the new design ARM iMac 23"/24" could land in Q420, and if it is lower priced for broader consumer appeal, I have to imagine Apple would want to release it in time for the Xmas market.

Well, here is a thought.
Maybe Apple planned 2 iMac refreshes this year. One in march and one in fall with rdna2 etc.

Now, COVID happened and march got screwed. Apple decided to postpone it a little bit but then other events happened and now the whole timeline is screwed as they simply can't announce update now and another one in fall as that would be too close to each other.
So, I would actually prefer that they cancel the march one as I'm sure it was just crappy spec update and focus on the proper one that was planned in fall. They might actually be able to push it forward so instead of usual october november we might get it in september. Thats only 2 monhts away and even though thats a long time at the same time it would be worth it to wait and get rdna2 and all the awesome goodies.

We shall see tomorrow but I would rather wait and get rdna2 then get some crappy update :)

Bummer news for those of us that was hoping to see a redesign. Probably makes sense with RDNA2 coming out in the fall to wait for it. However part of me thinks we’ll see spec bumps tomorrow morning prior to the keynote for 10th gen iMacs and maybe even Mac Minis. Nothing to write home about but at least make them current. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

Well, I hope the last Intel based iMac has the new design, I don't want an ARM based one right now, I have too many apps and games that would lose compatibility, plus Windows support.

I think I have said it before a few time but there is no room for a iMac presentation at WWDC. The ARM strategy, possibly a MacOS 11 will take at least 45 minutes. Then we have the iOS, iPadOS, and all the other. No way an Intel iMac can be squeezed in. The iMac may get a short video provided that there is a redesign. ARM MBP 13.3MBOP/iMac may get stage time to demonstrate new features of ARM Macs.

Perhaps we will be wiser tonight. The risks is that we will not.

The Verge just posted their article saying the last Intel iMac will be a 24-inch version to be announced at WWDC with availability Q3 2020 (July - Sept). Knowing The Verge, they’ve already had hands on time with it prior to tomorrow so it looks like new iMac tomorrow BUT it’s a 24-inch model which makes sense given the single Mac SKU we’ve been hearing about.

The question now is are we buying a 24-inch model? 😅

Funny to release a totally redesigned Intel Mac alongside the announcement that they're switching away from Intel Macs within 18 months. (While I will be waiting for ARM before my next Mac purchase, I still hope that happens..)

Tomorrow? So after todays WWDC? Strange
It is, in fact, still June 21st for many people.

it’s not that simple. If they were supposed to be out in March and we’re supposed to be on this show tonight (as of many leakers) it’s not that they don’t already exist. Stuff has been designed and produced. This is not a weekend hobby project.

its more a question of when. Do they just drop them on Wednesday. Do they wait two weeks or a month?
they will not just trash thousands and thousands of new iMacs And wait another 3-6 month to build a new one just for fun.

i think that they will introduce today (latest) iMac 27" Intel and late 2020 or 2021 new (first) iMac 24" ARM.

They've had years to think about it. More thought is put in to pitiful Apple TV programming than Mac hardware these days. You get the feeling Apple (minus computer) would prefer to just sell phones and collect the 30% on apps.

Still, I prefer macOS to the alternatives so will continue to hope that with ARM will come a new found enthusiasm for the small desktop market.

The problem is that I need a mac to code apps for iphone and the Ipad and they aren't really selling serious developer boxes. If the macbook is their solution, they need a serious docking solution. I can't code staring at a laptop screen for hours. The ergonomics doing this is really damaging. I'm not asking for something that rivals Windows prices, but they're just being insulting at this point with Fusion drives and 8 gigabytes of RAM. I want to give them money but I'm hesitating because the value proposition is just too bad.

I feel on my backside, that the coming time of global change promises us great delays and instability.

At the same time, I don’t want to stay on an aging Intel, just having bought a new Mac, and I don’t want to be a beta tester of a new platform, experiencing hardships.😬

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy for fusion sake it happened so that I need a new computer right now
