So it's official. macOS update support has finally ended on my 2012 iMac 😭😭😭

But on that note, i am SUPER stoked for the ARM iMac incoming. The fact that it has Logic Pro X and that they have Rosetta 2 in place seals the deal for me. I've waited almost 8 years to upgrade. I can stand to wait just a few more months! Definitely buying when it's released!

Looking good if you want a 24 inch Arm iMac by the end of the year (although it's possible that the first system release by the year end could just be a MacBook). The transition is to take 2 years, so I'm guessing that's from the date of the first system release. So could be up to 2 and a half years before the 27" iMac goes ARM.

Mac Pro was announced in 2018, we just didn’t see the finished hardware until then, which still wasn’t released until late 2019.

Correct. I am simply stating last year they spent 25 mins demoing hardware which completely overshadowed everything else at WWDC19. I overheard Windows users at the watercooler last year talking about hardware(Mac Pro) from WWDC19. It's not like the idea of spending a lot of time talking hardware at WWDC is out of the realm of possibilities.

I would expect the first AS Mac to be a MBA or Mac Mini. Doubt It'll be an iMac.

I was amazed Shadow of the Tomb Raider was running on an A12Z with Rosetta 2. I tried it on a 2019 MacBook Air i5 and the fan was SCREAMING with graphics all the way down, and I still had FPS issues. So it looks like even X86 apps run better on ARM than Intel LOL.

I trust Kuo is correct with his prediction it will be the smaller (13"/14") MacBook Pro and the new 24" iMac.

The consumer model Mac Mini will transition eventually, but I think it will stay Intel for a time - especially if Intel offers a 10th Generation CPU.

MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will probably combine into a single product when the ARM architecture transition is in full force. Then there will be a model with a larger screen (the "16-inch MacBook Air" some folks have been dreaming of).

Tim-

"We plan to continue to support and release new versions of Mac OS for intel-based Macs for years to come (with old Mac hardware on screen as Tim spoke). In fact we have some intel-based Macs in the pipeline that we're really excited about...".

Was Tim hinting that the intel based Macs in the pipeline will have a redesign? Or does he get "really excited" about a refresh?

All may not be lost. Could still see redesign intel based iMacs next month...
The way I understood is that intel macs will be supported for years after full transition.
And updated intel macs are coming

I was wondering about that cos they did mention STR was written for Metal and the snapshot didn’t really specify what GPU it was using... given that a Mac mini runs on igpu I’m inclined to think that this is Apple potentially snubbing both intel AND AMD?

Was the trashcan was 2013?
That would be the Mac Pro :p

Rise of the Tomb Raider supports Metal 2 under macOS so I expect the A12Z's GPU cores are far more effective than Intel's iGPU with Metal 2.

Yes it was.

So Big Sur will run on the "Trash Can" Mac Pro as well as the "Cheese-grater Mk. II" Mac Pro and the iMac Pro.

It's also quit interesting that it's just the A12z right now. You would expect there to be... i don't know how many, but many chips for an entire lineup. Did the math on GPU yesterday and i think it's eight for the the entire iMac lineup alone. I assume the amount of different CPUs is just as high. And these models serve a purpose in their pricing structure.

I expect iMac redesign will be based on Intel, and last Intel based update for the entire Mac line.

Yeah I just edited my comment after remembering Kuo mentioned the MacBook. Kuo was reported as saying (Macrumours)

"the first Mac models to adopt Arm-based chips will be the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac with a redesigned form factor, with Apple planning to launch the new models in the in fourth quarter of 2020 or early in 2021 at the earliest.".

There probably are more powerful CPUs in the labs that will be the ones used when consumer ARM architecture Macs ship. There are rumors of an "A14" that will have something like a dozen cores (mix of high-performance and power-efficient).

But the A12Z seems to be fast enough to develop on for now.

SO basically for me I am skipping gen 1.
I'm super impressed but I'll ride my macs to the ground and wait for system to mature before switching.
As a developer I'm fine working on intel macs for quote some time.

So where does that leave folks that want to buy an iMac? Wait a month to see better deals on 2019 models?
Plenty appeared in refurb store.
Ebay is showing good numbers as well.

I just watched the ending again, dident catch it. That refers directly to old iMacs. So it's ok.
The line about "we got new intel macs in the pipeline" pretty much referred to the iMacs to be released "now". I guess this will be only a matter of 2 - 30 days from today till they release them. They just did not want to overshadow the ARM news.
"pipeline" doesn't really mean 2-30 days. that's a stretch. Sounds more like code for end of year. You see how far our over optimism got us today.

I won't be excusing Apple. They learned nothing from 'bend gate' on the iPhone?

The good news for Dave and other potential iPad customers such as Freida...and myself...

It seems 'hope' (as always with Apple products...) is on the horizon.

Maybe this one will actually have 'reinforcement' in the chassis...it seems Apple forgot to put any in the 12.9 incher for the last two iterations. (The 11 inch iPad Pro doesn't seem to have this problem. Far sturdier from my 'in store' bend tests...)

Azrael.

if this is the case, I may as well wait for the next iPad Pro (A14 chip) if it’s the end of the year or even early next year. It looks like my 2017 iPad Pro will also be able to get the latest iPadOS 14 that was announced at today’s WWDC.
