Can I throw my 2c? I was skeptical about Apple's move to ARM not because of performance of having to drop X86, but due to developer support and transitions woes.

But after seeing the keynote today, I'm preparing my business to feature MacOS front and center. The idea that Mac OS will run iPad apps and iPad app inclusion into the Mac Store is a huge game changer which turned around things. As a game developer, I can target the entire apple ecosystem (minus accessories) with a single build.

And I'm happy to see Big Sur will support iMac Pro, I was scared apple was going to axe it. Hope that I can get my invitations to access the Developer Transition Kit.

As for the new iMacs, I have a feeling the 24" iMac rummored to come out will be on ARM. Especially with the said iPad Pro design for the screen. End of the year can't come soon enough.

There is no need to argue, that "Apple Silicone" is "far superior" then Intel. Even IF this was the case, the result will be a second "Betamax"-Desaster. Betamax was superior to VHS but it lost the war. There are billons of Macs out there, that operate in Windows environment with very specific software, that is only available to Windows. Until now, the iMac has been the best, most stable and reliable Windows machine, but this Rosetta-Desaster will put an end to this. The guys over at Dell and Lenovo are having the party of their lives...

Really? Billions of Macs? They haven't even sold 1 billion Macs ever never mind multiple billions that are being used to run windows.

Some more food for thought... The general aesthetic of macOS Big Sur is extremely rounded and almost touch optimised (big touch points, large round toggles, highlighting click areas etc.) I think it may not be such a stretch to imagine a touch screen or some sort of a multi touch compatible Mac. Also I think the rounded ness of the design language may extend to the Mac screen as well with rounded edges..

But more importantly... the Mac Mini with A12Z - 16GB RAM - 512GB SSD is $500 an equivalent Mac mini is double at least... I think this has good bearing for the future AS Mac pricing.

To be more precise, I'm basing a next month release on Tims pipeline comment together with Kuo saying "Apple will launch the refresh of existing Intel ‌iMac‌ in 3Q20". So could be Aug or Sept but I'm going to go for July because Jon

Yeah. A june launch after WWDC even was reported by one leaker. Just with "announced at WWDC, shipped in June".

This is a pure marketing move. Apple wants other headlines now. Apple wants other headlines when the DevKit gets its review articles and videos. - If there is a redesign 30 days probably makes the most sense to give news some time to settle after the dev kit ships later this week. (wich again means it arives after all the reporting on the OS News and WWDC workshop results). Especially if there is a redesign with is more dominant in the general news cycle.

They plan very tightly.

I strongly asume my predicted release at the beginning of this month was right and just got kicked due to blacklifesmatter. There is no way that will ever be proven right, but with that tight scheudle and apples drive to go for 14 and 30 day intervals it made lots of sense.

On my iMac 2012 i got a popup after the last MacOS update that this computer will no longer get new OS Updates. (i hope they do fix the finder freezing, wich it still has, because that sucks)

I must have missed that then. Perfect time to move on!

I’m on the store I don’t see this config

Probably sold out already, people usually snap up the desirable configs within hours.

BUT it did exist, I promise:

I disagree, Apple is the leader and Microsoft is the follower now. Microsoft will jump through whatever hoops they need to, to run Windows on Mac. It might mean making a proper ARM version of Windows, or through virtualization, either way it will exist.
You are comparing companies that have big differences. Apple, after all, manufactures and supplies both software and hardware, now more than ever. But Microsoft still has a completely seized software market.

So my WWDC watch ended up with ordering a new battery for my MacBook air 2012.

i need to write documents but I want to do loads more and had a iMac in my scope. Will wait around a little bit longer.

I'm guessing the new iMac will get rounded edges. Just look at all the curved UI elements in macOS Big Sur! This would also be in line with the iPad Pro design language. Would look cool!

At this point has sense to buy a new intel iMac next month or in September, when you know that it will be a transition to ARM in the following 2 years? I think I will save money and wait.

ok, I know this sux but at the same time its probably good news. The longer we wait the more likely we might be getting RDNA2. So, september/october event will be juicy. Until then we just have to suffer a little longer :)

Tim is really excited about the coming intel iMacs but I'm not sure that devices with processors that Apple have essentially told us are old news merits an event. I guess they could add it on to the iPhone event but I think next month is more likely.

Apple users tend to underestimate how many things Microsoft has their hands in.

"Now there’s even less chance that this will happen. It makes no sense to do a global redesign for the sake of one of the latest generation of Intel, to again change the structure for Silicone. Unless they can unify it, which is also unlikely."

I think it might make sense to release a redesigned 27" because otherwise that tired old design could be around for up to 2 and a half years until an ARM model. How many units of the old design would Apple sell in 2021/22 when people would know that a redesigned ARM iMac was coming?

Surely even Tim Cook wouldn't say that he was "really excited" about spec bumped intel iMacs, especially after all that ARM promotion.

It depends on what interests people more: internal design or external. I personally am interested in the first.

People that want bootcamp Windows, proven reliability of the architecture, and don't want to be a guinea pig for a completely new generation of Macs.

This day makes me wonder if I should just move to a cave. I don’t need computers. Do I. I can just look at these nice holiday pics from the camera’s screen. My GoPro has a nice screen yes? It does the job. Editing is overrated. Feeling is what matters.

Until the ARM mac arrives.

Dude. The thing is ready, has been delayed since march
Considering how many rumors have been proved wrong with the iMacs, I don't think so. I had strong doubts about this earlier as well...the only source was Prosser right?

i'm betting it will just show up on apple.com some day with no announcement. I would absolutely buy an iMac with an intel chip, and so would a large number of users. Software in a lot of the industries will take years to catch up. Yes I know about about Rosetta2 and other solutions but believe me, until there is native support, some applications simply won't perform well enough. I don't think a lot of consumers realize how much niche software there is out there for different industries.

Also, for those that upgrade hardware more frequently, it's really not crazy to suggest that an Intel machine is the right move. 4 years from now the ARM based machines would have worked the kinks out, and you could upgrade then.

What DOES give me a hint of reservation on upgrading now? If there's no target display mode, the machine would essentially have no resale value. If there IS target display mode, at least you have a nice display.

I hope you are right. But imagine a new redesigned iMac with intel chips. Would you buy it knowing a new generation of ARM macs are coming next year?

I may very well do so. I have a dedicated Windows box for gaming, but I do like to run Windows via a VM on my iMac and if the app support for Intel is still there via Universal Fat Binaries and the features I want are not available on the ARM Architecture Mac Model, but still are on the Intel...

I was not going to buy an Intel 5K iMac today even if they had announced it because I want to see what the 2020 iMac Pro brings to the party.
