Hello Manfredi.

Apple offered pretty comprehensive solutions for Intel software (I was shocked at how good that was compared to the last transition. The details of which in the presentation were quite clear.) and the 'emulation' software for Rosetta 2 seems to work even better than last time..! There might be edge cases. But that can depend on the developer.

The iOS write once and target deploy is a gamechanger. Macs at 20 million units. iPads at 20 million units. 40 million units. iPhone at tens of millions of units per quarter. £££££££££££££££££££.

Having millions of iphone and 1 million iPad apps. Just working 100% straight.

Seems like Apple are offering an insanely goode, out the gate solution, whether you want to run Intel or iOS ARM.

But yes, if you're, like me, in that (horrible) situations (again from my 'selfish' buyer perspective...) with no computer at all and 'need' to buy one?

Buy 2nd hand iMac. Prices are still quite high on eBay for iMac kit.
Old iMac. Bad value. Bad price. Old.
Hacktintosh. Good value. Good price. 'Maintainence' of the tech' variety. Not bullet proof. But people do have them as daily drivers.
'New' 'Legacy' Intel iMacs. 3Q. July? August? Sept?
iMac AS ARM. 4Q. October. Nov. Dec?

I probably should have just bit the bullet and built the Hack' back in March when my machine fell over. But this 'iMac' has been 'imminent' for a while.

Will wait 'just a bit' longer for the 'new' Intel iMac. And see if it's the new design?

Intel iMacs will tank in price when the new Mac ARM comes out.

Azrael.

thank you sooooo much!!!!! :)

i'm in that (horrible ) situation (from buyer prospective) with no computer at all and needed to buy new one!!

but what you suggest me...? waiting till the end of the year hoping in a new iMac 24 ARM or in the meantime buying an iPad pro...? (with 1 month at least of delivery time)???

One option may be to buy a second hand iMac to last until Q4 when the 24 iMac Arm is rumoured to be released. I'm seeing 2017 21.5" iMacs on eBay for £750. You probably wouldn't lose much money selling that on in 4-6 months.

One thing people don't take into account is the fact that the new tech might actually be more expensive.
Who said the new MBP or iMac will be cheaper?
New panels, new chips, new cameras, materials and so on.

Only one thing is certain... that nothing is certain lol

Just a thought.

Remember when there was a rumor of an all new 23” lower end iMac going around, I think that’s the 24” ARM iMac.

The iMac Sonny Dickson leaked that might have released at WWDC and obviously scrapped was rumored to have an all new design with AMD GPU’s. That means it would have to be running Intel chips. So I think they release a new design 27” iMac in the July/August timeframe with Intel chips and then update the 23” iMac with same design and ARM processors in the October, November timeframe. Also the rumoured 13.3” Arm MacBook Pro could be the redesign smaller bezel 14” that we thought we were getting as well, also coming October, November.

So to break it down:

July/August - Redesigned Intel 27” iMac with Intel 10th Gen, NAVI GPU, SSD, T2 chip etc

October/November - Redesigned 24” Arm iMac and 13.3” Arm MacBook Pro.

This aligns with Kuo rumors, Sonny Dickson, Jon Proser, CoinX etc.

I do agree...

Another thing maybe : If Apple doesn't want to cannibalize its Intel iMac sales, they might offer the redesign with the upcoming Intel iMac. So they offer something nice, a new design, to incite people to buy it even if it's not on ARM.

Mayyyybe ...

I don’t think they’d cannibalise during the transition phase... plus doing a redesign to fit intel makes no sense as it would mean building machines that are still confined to the rules of the intel chips.

There are quite a few customers who are probably looking to place orders right now (business mostly) and a few others who have very specific peripheral needs that would rather not take the chance for AS macs.

Equally your every day customer won’t know because when the intel spec bump lands Apple’s website won’t mention the transition to AS anywhere and instead will talk about how the latest iMac has 40% better graphics performance and faster 9th / 10th gen intel cpus.

I reckon the redesign will be what Apple has been itching to build for the last couple of years and will herald the new era of AS Macs.

To most devs and enthusiasts it is clear that Apple is putting Intel on life support but for the average consumer it still is the best iMac Apple has to offer.

Well, if they don't offer a 'new' design then it anchors sales to the old design which are boat anchored with legacy hardware.

They need to offer 'some' incentive to move Intel Mac hardware for 6 months to a year whilst we await the iMac 30-32 inch Mac ARM. ...which will follow the 24 incher within half a year?

I aint waiting a whole 'nuther year for a bigger iMac. I'm not completely crazy. (Please, no jokes...)

Defo cheaper, there will be artificial markup to differentiate performance classes and while there’s the potential of R&D markup on the 1st gen products, I don’t think Apple is gonna hamper transition to AS like that.

Plus the cost of building a Mac is about to drop considerably if we’re saying that no more royalties will be paid to Intel and potentially even AMD.

And I guess there’s little tech R&D involved in the redesign given that a lot of the tech R&D had been pioneered in the devices that already shipped them (iPhone iPad etc)

It actually makes sense. I think Sonny Dicksons source was correct, just not on timing. Hence the delivery times on the 27” and the rumored NAVI GPU’s which would only work on Intel.

Yeah. I wouldn't throw Sonny to the wolves because it didn't happen at WWDC. Apple could have announced and had us waiting for the end of July to ship.

We're not that far away from the Intel cpu paper launch...and there could well be a shortage of cpus for Apple to deliver to the customer base. Apple clearly has their reasons for the timing of this. (We've already had the macbooks and minis...and the iPad z. So it's not like Apple can't deliver...but the emphasis is clearly on the AS migration. And the intel iMac is the last pitshop before it happens in totality.)

If they just announce and ship in July independent of WWDC. It's the same thing.

I wanted a 'new' Mac as much as anyone. And yes. I was 'mildly' disappointed at no hardware.

But looking at the bigger picture. Really(!) excited at the AS preview. What they said made sense, they're doing it for the same reasons they have each time. To control their destiny to make better products. And how they're going to implement the transition really impressed me and the 'sample Mac Mini 'A12z' set up and demo blew me away.

It would behoove Apple to price Macs like they 'used' to be priced to aid in the Mac installed AS ARM base. The sooner they get it to ten, 20 million the better... They can be at the original 25 millioned installed Macs 'base' inside a year if they're really aggressive (compared to where they are now...) on price.

Will they pass the savings on? Ie. Some for them, some for us?

We'll see.

I hope the Arm iMac redesign will have an G4 style arm.

I wouldn't be against a spiritual 'G5' nom de plume...for the Macbook Pro and Mac Mini...iMac 24...

Probably going to be 'M' for Mac?

'AS' (currently called...) With 'Silcone' standing for 'we making cpus like the big boys now...'

So it may be the 'AS14.'

It does to me. I like the way you put a line through all their predictions...and they do line up and make sense.

I think the 'AS14' will blow the current 21 inch iMac Intel out the water.

If you want a 27 (large screen iMac...) you buy in July/Aug/Sept or wait until...March to July next year for imac ARM 'large'?

And maybe they'll have a higher clocked version for the 27-30-32 inch iMac 'Mac' ARM which follows the 24 inch iMac ARM this fall. Somewhere in the March timeframe of 2021...?

I don't think they will use the same gen CPUs as iPhone. It doesn't make sense on a marketing level, unless the only differentiation is the letter (x, z...) but I doubt it.

There will be a dedicated line to macs. Perhaps the same for laptop and desktop, but different than mobile devices.

Moreover, I am pretty sure the mini.LED technology will be one of the unique features of the AS macs.

If you were going to buy the iPad Pro...just be forewarned that the Ipad is getting a 'bump' in the fall. Likely with the A14x which will toast the current one.

There are probably good refurb prices on eBay for 2017 (the sturdy version) and even the 2018 models much cheaper than buying new.

I'd like an iPad I am going to buy one. But I can't do with the current 'bendy' 12.9 incher. I want them to upgrade the frame for the model coming this fall.

When you've bought a machine...those 6 months evaporate. But when you're 'waiting' it seems to take ages...

Perception. A wonderful thing.

Are there rumors for a 32" iMac?

One way of creating distance between the old and the new?

Size.

Ergo. 24 inch iMac ARM. 30-32 inch iMac ARM.

All of a sudden the old 21 and 27s look...'old.' Very old. And not so good value.... expensive.

AS silicon will be customised in the same way the eg. A14 for iPhone vs A14x for iPad will be customised.

Cores. Clock speed. Features. And stomp all over Intel's az in the process.

Anybody thinking otherwise is the same person that was sure we are getting redesigned iMacs on WWDC.
The infrastructure investment for such shift alone must cost a fortune.
If they somehow are cheaper (performance - performance ratio) it would be against any common business sense / metrics.
Surely nice but I wouldn't bet on it.

Apple will feed the leaks to perception manage the prices for Mac ARM. £££££.

They won't be surrendering their current margins without a fight. They may align a 'bit' lower to aid adoption. But if I'm honest. I think they'll profit pocket the difference saved vs Intel.

Just like Petrol companies will want us paying the same unit price for Electricity in cars as we do for Petrol (gas) in cars.

And do it with a straight face.

Azrael.

Yup that might be the 1st gen markup but seems like we might have some hope of the cost being offset by the cost savings of not buying Intel? Defo interested to see how this plays out...

Given that the report is on the unit cost of the components it would be interesting to see what an A12z costs today vs an 8th gen intel that in the mini

And on the bigger picture, the raw materials cost for the chassis may decrease but the new design and manufacturing process costs may increase, it will just be an interesting balance of how much can be offset and how much would be passed on to the user.

It wouldn’t be absurd to think of Apple selling the new AS Mac at regular 21,5 iMac prices while touting equal or better performance than the higher cost BTO 21.5 iMac or even the 27 iMac

After fiddling with Big Sur last night, I'm now not so anxious to see a new imac before this wildly unstable beta settles down. Releasing a new imac with ver 1 of this seems a strong possibility time wise.

The last time Apple really 'deep dove' on price was the introduction of the iPad under Steve Jobs.

Mac fans and Analysts alike were saying £1,000.

Jobs dropped teh hammer at £399. Just like he did on the iPhone price...AFTER launch.

Why? Because, Jobs knew he had to drive adoption.

Cook's Apple have had the luxury of far many more stores and conditioning of Apple products being 'not cheap' and prices being raised for 'new' stuff with high BTO costs...holding prices for 'old' kit...and even ludicrous prices for wheels, crepe entry tower specs and stands...and monitors. Even 'cheap' iOS kit has had price rises through the roof with £1k+ ipads and iphones.

Apple's mindshare is greater than ever and established under Cook. With an order of magnitude of units, marketshare, stores and 250 billion in the bank. Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Even the leaks are managed.

We can expect ARM Macs to hold their prices. If they align slightly lower. Consider it a 'gift' from Tim Apple.

But yeah, a new iMac within a year. Of course.

I loved what I saw of Big Sur.

Yeah.. Cook is a different kinda guy isn’t he haha... That said I think for market domination it would be a good move to get them out cheaper. I expect the AS Mini to come out at £499 the Mac 24 to come out at £799 etc.

The DTK in the PPC to Intel transition was pretty much priced at the eventual consumer price, if that’s any indication then I think we can expect AS Mac mini to be around the price of the DTK...

I'd take a Mac Mini for £500 with 16 gigs of ram, 512 ssd and a 14x chip.

hoping to have an iMac 24inch ARM able to perform AT THE SAME TIME editing photo like PS or LR as per yesterday preview with fast edit of 5Gb photos an at the same time listening music and watching movies asking siri info about wather while scrolling safari...

that's could be my "daily" use of a Mac (obviously extreme doing all at the same time)

On a slightly different note.. If the AS Macs come out at competitive pricing then 2 question:

1. What do you recommend to your non-Apple family members? Is it justifiable to recommend Windows machines that cost more with potentially worse performance just on the sole basis it's a Windows? Or is this the moment when people start actively recommending macOS?

2. If the AS Mac adoption rates go up and Apple manages to start gobbling up desktop / laptop marketshare away from MS.. what does this mean for Chromium? I took the Safari Extension bit to mean that they're revisiting Safari extensions and possibly giving them more prominence.. And with Safari being one of the highlights for macOS Big Sur could we see Chromium's dominance start to dwindle?
