No iMac Pro?
Do you think that it will be a part of the intel past?
hard to say. I think it ill follow the path of the mac pro as far as ARM is concerned, so last up for that, but there was a rumor a couple months back re: the imac pro with a new pro display (see post above) late this year, so maybe will get updated after the regular intel imac in the meantime.

Yes. There won't be Xeon equivalent to AS. iMac Pro no longer have a place to live in the iMac segment under AS. Maybe one more refresh with Intel chip + RDNA2 and something big for the screen, but I wouldn't expect an iMac Pro with AS.

Kuo said in March that iMac pro with Mini-led would launch Q4 2020. He then said it might slip to Q1 2021, however latterly said "Starting in 2021, that all new Mac models will be equipped with Apple processors, and that it will take 12 to 18 months for Apple to transition to an all-Arm lineup.".

So no intel Mac's after this year, again suggesting the iMac Pro mini-led drops this year, because unlikely iMac pro will go AS this year.

A lot of third party places also seem to be largely sold out of iMacs now, and dates for BTO (and 27" stock models) have slipped right out from Apple's online store... which suggests an imminent refresh (as in tomorrow is possible being a Thursday?) I can't imagine if it is just a press release update it's going to be the mooted big redesign though? While they have released the likes of the 16" MacBook Pro through this route previously that was a bit of a .5 update to the existing 15" while the iMac is meant to be the biggest change since the white plastic G5 replaced the Pixar lamp G4.

The redesigned unibody 2009 iMac with new screen sizes was announced via press release as well.

CUPERTINO, California—October 20, 2009—Apple® today unveiled an all new iMac® line featuring brilliant LED-backlit 21.5 and 27-inch widescreen displays in a new edge-to-edge glass design and seamless all aluminum enclosure. The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, is the fastest ever with Intel Core 2 Duo processors starting at 3.06 GHz, and Core i5 and i7 quad-core processors for up to twice the performance.* Every new iMac ships with a wireless keyboard and the all new wireless Magic Mouse, the world’s first mouse with Multi-Touch™ technology pioneered by Apple on the iPhone®, iPod touch® and Mac® notebook trackpad.

There does seem to be a massive delay in stock 27” middle and top models in the UK Apple Store at the moment (although you’d be able to pick up a BTO sooner) but I would have said Apple would release something on a Tuesday if they had a choice.

I was told this was due to a lack of panels due to covid-19. It's affected new 2020 TVs, too. I was trying to get hold of a new LG GX 65" and they became super-hard to find, with a handful here and there.

My guess is that the new iMac was ready to ship around WWDC, but just not in enough numbers. Tim Cook is a big one for making sure that product is well-stocked from launch, so Apple is probably holding back due ramp up production when supply allows.

Shipping dates have been a bit misleading in the past, though as it lines up with a rumoured refresh that also adds some credence? I guess with things being as they are currently that does add noise to the picture, moreso than usual!

Good man! I am in a foul mood tonight - Mac mini issues.

Top tip for everyone. Never buy a headless Mac that runs Catalina (and relies on an Intel iGPU). I have said some **** about ARM Macs, but I am really looking forward to them and Mac OS 11. Catalina can SMD. My thoughts and prayers are with the poor soul in this thread, who just bought a Mac mini.

I hope you resolve your problems with it.

At least Big Sur and AS offer a brighter future. But it's frustratingly out of reach for now.

All the usual USB-C related issues (widely reported since launch, with no fix). Things such as the mini not recognising monitors, not displaying the correct resolution or frame rate after waking from sleep. Trying new cables, different monitors or an entire new Mac mini hasn't made a difference to me. Thankfully, I haven't had the bluetooth issues many others have faced (touchwood...).

All my previous Macs (iMac and MBPs) were pain free, but this Mac mini has been a real nuisance from the get go. As soon as an ARM mini is announced, I will jump ship. It can't be any worse!

Thanks, Azrael. I am all aboard the AS hype train now. I've gone from a real sceptic to 'COUNT ME IN'.

Thankfully, for mere mortals like myself who are fine with mid-level Intel CPUs, the transition isn't far off at all it seems.

I fin 27 inches constraining now.

I think it's time for the next screen paradigm shift.

32 inch XDR and 6k.

Something more expansive.

Maybe the move to Mac ARM and the top end iMac AS will deliver this.

Azrael.
I always thought 32in was too big (from seeing them around the office before I started using one, or seeing them in shops). It was only when I had the chance to get one as a free 'upgrade' from a 27in monitor, did I realise how amazing the larger screen is. Especially for 4k monitors, as it makes 1440p scaling much more user friendly.

I would actually prefer a smaller monitor. Right now my setup is the 21,5 inch i am happy with, when i do after effects work and alike i just put a second monitor on my desk and i have the real estate i need. When i am don after a week or so i put it back in it's box and i am fine. I don't need my computer to be the size of my tv, and yes, 32 inch is enough for a tv in a time were a flatmate once said "ill go to the cinema today, i am just in the mood to not watch a movie on my laptop screen" xD

I've resolved to wait it out for the 24" ARM, which could be 6 or 7 hundred cheaper and faster. Only problem is once the 27" redesigned intel drops every day will feel a like month and every cell will be screaming at me to buy. I'm trying to train myself in delayed gratification taking tips from some experts.

Surely 'pros' want a screen bigger than 27 inches to do their work?

As someone who spends all day in IDEs, I would welcome something larger, but only if it doesn't come at a DPI loss. So for example, 30"+ 4k is no good because it's not capable of that crispy sharp 2x scaling. 2560x1440 at anything above 27" is out of the question. Blurry or blocky text is no bueno.

Reverting back to 16:10 aspect ratio (as used in the old aluminum Cinema Display line) would be nice too. The argument for using 16:9 was always cheaper panels, but that doesn't really apply in the case of the panels Apple is using in the 27" iMac or 32" XDR — the first is only used outside of Apple in 27" Ultrafine 5K's and the XDR's panel isn't used anywhere else at all.

It could also just not be ARM yet.
