£3250. Not a 'bad' price. Did you get Apple Care with it?

Azrael.
Still has another 10 months on it apparently. Hopefully they release a new iMac by then and I can resell this one. Or if I like it maybe just hold onto it for a while. I need it for CAD work and know Autodesk will need time to successfully upgrade their mac software for the new AS machines. Has anyone heard if they are planning to do so?

One of the reasons why Steve Jobs' Apple bought Final Cut was they were fed up of Adobe's 2nd rate attitude to Mac software. And that was way back then.

Honestly wish he'd done the same with some sort of CAD software. Though probably too small of a niche/market compared to video.

Bitch at Tim for running Apple like a corporation - and let us not forget that the purpose of a corporation is to make money - but fact is Apple is more successful under him then it ever was under any other CEO in the company's history and as much as we all complain about "the prices are too damn high", more of us are paying those prices than ever before and Apple is selling more product at those high prices then ever.

I'm well into five figures on spend, as well, but if I didn't find value in the products, I wouldn't buy it. I was never a fan of Apple because they were the "scrappy underdog" - that time in their corporate history was actually a reason for me to dismiss them - so every dollar I have spent on an Apple product - iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, Time Capsule, Airport, Apple Watch, Apple Watch Bands, Apple-branded accessories, iCloud, AppleTV+, iTunes music, iTunes movies, iTunes television shows, etc. - has always been on my view of the merit of the product or service.

If they could have the same merit at half the price, that would be great, but I consider it the "price of entry" and as long as the product/service still has merit, I'll keep paying said price.

And I expect Apple Silicon Macs to score very high on merit, so if they also have a high price attached to them, I shall pay it.

They would charge several hundred more and I would still get it.

It’s a combination of many factors. I’m software engineer, big fan of Steve Jobs (I have a portrait of him painted LOL), I want to be part of this. And I know it will work very well because it fullfils all software en hardware engineering best practices.

10 months to go? That's ok, then. And at the very least, it will cover you until they release a new Intel and even AS iMac.

It will be mighty fine for CAD work.

Aye. I wish Apple would have done some work on CAD, gone in a bit for Image editing and Painting in the early days.

Apple's headed out for 'mainstream' these days. With their iOS, Services: Apple Arcade and Apple TV+. They're like the 'new' Sony but with actual software under pinning what they do.

'Money isn't everything.' Steve Jobs.

'Think Different.' So naturally, as individuals, it's up to the Apple community to be as vociferous and as critical as Apple is in charging their inflated prices.

Tim Cook making more money as CEO is irrelevant. He stood on Steve's shoulders to do it. He'd still be at Compaq or somewhere 'PC' else otherwise.

Tim Cook's custodianship of the Mac platform over the last ten years speaks for itself. With 6 year Mac Pro waits, 4 year Mac Mini waits, 3 year iMac Pro waits and iMac 1 and 5 months waits because? The Mac is 'special.'

I haven't bought anything Mac or iOS in years. Just not worth the prices.

It's for each person to consider the merit of the price. And I'm sure Master Cook will take the 'pish' if he can. (See Wheels and Monitor stands...and the junk iMac at £1050.)

Apple Silicon. They will still have to compete in the consumer market. We'll see what they charge. If it's 'too much' consumers may not buy it.

Apple. It's just another corporation.

Azrael.

I haven’t heard anything from Autodesk yet but I inquired at Nemetschek and they were hoping to have Vectorworks 2021 ready to run native on Apple silicon Macs by winter. Even so I’m planning on Getting one last intel Mac. Too many niche programs and plugins in my workflow.

Maybe if Tim had been running Intel they would have actually released a new CPU for the Mac Mini that didn't take four years to come to market. Or a new CPU for the iMac Pro that didn't take three years to come to market. :p

Apple Silicon. They will still have to compete in the consumer market. We'll see what they charge. If it's 'too much' consumers may not buy it.

They're selling more Macs on average under Tim then they did under anyone else, so seems enough consumers want it and if AS is as amazing as many of us think it will be... *fingers crossed*

Tim has turned Apple into an "aspirational brand" far more effectively than Steve ever did. People snidely remark about Job's "Reality Distortion Field", but scores of millions of people all over the world now aspire to own an Apple product, even if something functionally equivalent is available for far less from another vendor.

And it's not because Apple customers are "sheeple" who will buy anything with an Apple logo on it - if they were, Apple would sell significantly more Macs than they do now. I honestly think that it is because PCs are just...passé...now. Smartphones fill the role for the majority of people who used to have to buy a PC and tablets soak up the majority of the minority ( o_O ) of those people who need more than a smartphone. We (the PC-first crowd) are now the anachronism.

The Mac is 'special.'

The "easy" move would be to just stay with Intel and do minor spec updates every couple of years because it's cheap and easy and requires little attention from the C Suite. And they would shift tens of millions of units a year and make a lot of money doing so.

Moving to Apple Silicon is requiring not just a lot of Apple's money, it's also requiring a lot of Apple's focus and manpower. It's not just a new hardware architecture, it's also a new way of developing the OS and applications. The Mac probably has not seen this amount of corporate focus since at least 2007 and it could very well turn out to be the thing that keeps the Mac (and PCs) relevant for the long term.

My Mac History:
PowerPC white tower (can’t remember the model)
Mac G4 Cube (loved it so much)
iMac (the white one)
iMac 2010 27” i3

All of these served me well never had one virus or any of them die on me. I can’t say that about any other product I’ve purchased accept my Honda cars. Both amazing companies that know how to build long lasting products.

that said...release a new iMac for heaven’s sake Tim Apple!

There's only one reason I buy Macs; macOS.

The Apple hardware over the last 8-10 years has been a joke but I'm prepared to give Apple the chance to redeem itself with Apple SOC chips and hopefully the (finally) competitive hardware that could bring. If they mate macOS to exceptional hardware that offers cutting edge performance then I'll be very, very happy and I'll willingly pay the Apple tax for running the best OS.

You break my heart.
It’s not only a corporation. Apple still has a soul. A vision. Can you describe me the vision of Microsoft ?
Microsoft in 2013 = Matrick Mess......Microsoft now with Phil Spencer in charge of Xbox division....at least there they are making consumer first decisions....we will see on July 23rd....but yea not sure about the rest of Microsoft.

I'd be able to get what I want on PC for $2,500 easily............I love Logic Pro 7 and I want to experience all the features and updates since 2007.......There are hundreds! :)

If it wasn't for Logic Pro X....I'd go with PC and another DAW.

So Steve Jobs bought Final Cut and chainsawed PRemiere off at the knees in retaliation for this substandard practice...

followed by Blackmagic who decapitated both of them!!! DaVinci Resolve has come a long way and albeit a bit complex to understand, it truly is an outstanding piece of software. Everything within one application.

I have been tempted to try Affinity to see if I can replace photoshop. I don't understand why Adobe makes buggy updates to Photoshop. Or Pixelmator. I can see Affinity & Pixelmator embracing AS quickly than Adobe ever will. I'd rather pay $80AUD for Affinity if it is a seamless transition and allows me to do what I am currently doing in Photoshop. Only wish Affinity had a longer trial period.

I replaced Photoshop with Affinity about 2 years ago. It's a passable stand-in. Most shortcuts are the same, but some still trip me up. It's very efficient on the hardware, but I still prefer the adobe interface. I also have the iPad affinity app, which i think is MUCH better than the photoshop iPad app. I'll probably go back to photoshop someday, but affinity has gotten me through grad school when the budget was tighter and the pandemic.

"Ready to ship"

Now where have I heard that one before...?

Have you used PCs recently? If you think Apple computers are a joke, try a typical corporate PC. Abysmal screens, plastic, lacking ports (learned that from Apple), cheap, poor trackpads and keyboards that rangers from tolerable to nearly useless. Apple has always had less choices and usually high end. High end PC also cost money. Price/performance has always been in PC favour but not everything is about performance.

Let's see, AirPods Studio, watch bands, new coloured cases?

This my issue too, the interface!!! That is the hardest thing to switch from. I had the same issue with lightroom to Capture One Pro. I might have to suck it up and persist. If it can do what I need to do the most then I am set.

At least you have a heart. :)

But...

Corporations?

And Souls? (if Apple had a soul...it left with Steve Jobs who gave 'all' for his singular Apple vision. But there plenty of people who work for Apple that clearly care. Craig Fed' being one of the notable ones.)

As for the relevancy to this thread. We only have to see multiple revolutions the iMac was under Steve Jobs...compared to the iStale evolution since his lamented passing.

I don't speak for M$. I'm sure they could articulate their vision (or they may download it in the background to your hardware 'automatically...'. But I do note that under their 'post-Ballmer dancing CEO' they have taken an interest in Apple's creative back garden. With breathless visions of superior desktop design (Surface Studio...with the caveats of spec and price...but the latter two could be aimed at Apple's 'value for money' fodder..) and the more 'hollostic' Surface tablet design with its clever detachable tablet 'mode' compared to the iPad and 'Still haven't figured it out yet...'z'stand for £300.'

I can well believe that Steve Jobs would have, with tears in his eyes, screamed..., 'This is my company...this is not how we do things...' (allegedly after the backlash of the 'holding it wrong' phone.)

Clearly somebody who was products 1st and profits 2nd.

Azrael.

*nervous anticipation.

Could it be? A new iMac pending?

...and on that distant horizon.

A 12 core Mac ARM..? That's got to hurt.

Please Apple, just put this rumoured SoC in a Mac mini for me! The graphics power alone are worth the upgrade. Given there have been no AS Mac mini rumours, here's to hoping they put the 2nd gen, more powerful SoC in (shared with the 27in iMac replacement, perhaps?)
