Lord I hope the cooling is on point with this new machine. Surely they couldn't give us an iMac that glows red under higher workloads?

I'm relatively happy though. I was expecting something incredibly modest, so as to make the next gen look wildly good by comparison.

Expectations on that front are at an all time low based on reading this thread.

I don't think any of us believe that Apple want to give us the best product that they can anymore (extortionate prices, graphics cards and ram... cough, cough).

Happy days in the grand scheme of things with the high end graphics card and a 'more affordable' 2 TB SSD, egregious cost notwithstanding. I needed a new machine, and finally managed to buy something 'new' on the first day of release : )

Probably means nothing although I wish its better cooling.
I've checked it against my 2017 15" MBP which is like a jet engine even for basic stuff sometimes and the numbers were half the iMac so I don't think this is what we are hoping for unfortunately :(

Would the bigger overall space and fan size, plus the removal of the fusion drive give the iMac enough of an advantage to compensate (assuming that they haven't changed it in someway)?

I'm a little confused. Has anything been updated with the iMac Pro? It looks as though fewer configuration options are available.

Still effectively the same machine it was in 2017. There are new CPUs available and new GPUs coming and there was a rumor the iMac Pro would get a MiniLED display so we might see a new model launched in late 2020 or early 2021. Or the model might be End of Life. We don't really know right now.

My main question is is the 3.0 Ghz 10 core Xeon Processor + Radeon Pro Vega 64X with 16 GB GPU the better combo than the new iMac options, such as 3.6 Ghz 10 core 10th generation (boost up to 5 Ghz?) + 5700XTwith 16 GPU the better combo?

In terms of raw performance, the iMac probably pencils out ahead, but the iMac Pro has the cooling to keep both the CPU and GPU at "full-speed" whereas the iMac will eventually get too hot and have to start slowing things down.

One other tidbit, when do you go from 32 to 64 GB of RAM?

Multiple VMs or large data sets cached in RAM, I would imagine.

Interesting. You can write off computers in Germany. Even though not a business?

Computers are considered essential. So a normal citizen can write one of over the duration of five years i think. Provided you actually pay taxes of cause.
A bussines would obviously be able to write of more than one.

Compared to the machine you have now. The T3 8 core with 5500XT is the sweet spot with an actual SSD included.

It will be night and day compared to a 2013 machine?

Azrael.

I was gonna buy a 5000$ camera in July, but decided the wait for more reviews, and figured I’m not going anywhere at the moment so I could bear the wait. I was gun-shy yo press that “complete payment” button but really, it’s money I was gonna spend either way...

The boost will be greatly appreciated

Perspective.

For those that have a working machine.

Thank you. I learned something new there.

I'm coming from a 2012 iMac 27 incher. So this recent 'substantial' spec boost will be night and day better for me. Or for anyone around that age of iMac.

I can expect cpu to be several times faster. Multi-core to be several times faster. The GPU to bury the old 680MX. Getting 100s of % faster is an order of magnitude of difference. That's what 8 years does. Not only does it ages us...in waiting terms.... :p but a computer that age will do well to maintain its grace.

For 2017 and 2019 iMac owners who have a healthy machine, they get the luxury of sitting this one out...if they wish to. It won't be an order of magnitude faster. But the next leap of 50-100% on AS Macs will be very noticeable.

We finally have the 'ultimate' Intel iMac. But it is...the end of the road and the iStale design and Intel Silicon is the beach head between the Intel iMacs and the new AS iMacs to come.

Azrael.

Actually, this is defo worth considering/taking a look - I bought a maxed-out i9 yesterday eve using my daughter's student edu access and once at checkout you log in using your apple id (mine) so all billing, etc. in my name and good for expenses. I saved £350+ and she gets a free set of airpods from the edu deal. (plus it's a mid-August delivery which I guessed might happen way back in June ;) )

Thanks. I´ll check in with someone and compare prices/see if it works for my company address.
From what i see the major difference here are the AirPods. Sold of on ebay thats what makes it a great deal unless i get my RAM for free.

That 6600M has been rumoured (RDNA2...) so there may still be some hope that the iMac Pro might get a similarly 'quiet' update later this year.

As for the heat. It's down clock. Under volt? Or two fans? And I think you and others noted...a much slower clock for the gpu...?

The YouTube and iFixit crowd will get to it soon, I should imagine.

For me, the pudding will be in the eating.
Rendering something on eg. Blender 3 times.
Running two copies of a computer game in Bootcamp (can an iMac pat its head and rub its stomach at the same time?)
Playing with the 'big brush' in Affinity Photo on a 300ppi or 600ppi A3 sized doc.
Does Poser Pro 12 still have 'move' lag in the 3D window. (Probably a poor port of the Windows version...)
Can I create a Zbrush model of millions of polys and go 'wahey' in the model window?
Can I run several apps at once? Image App in the foreground whilst another 3D program renders in the back ground?
How teh snappy is the OS? How many Safari tabs?
Can the iMac cope with being in a upper tier room on a muggy 'warm' day?

Less than two weeks to find out.

24 inch? Mac October event?

Possible.

Early 2021 seems more likely to me.

I tend to think they'll go for the higher unit sales of laptops 1st. £££.

Then the desktop iMac later.

A 6 month gap between the Intel iMac and the AS iMac24 puts us at Jan' next year.

I remember buying the iPad 3 and 6 months later Apple released the iPad 4. :/

Azrael.

I guess I was hoping that Apple would add a space grey mouse and keyboard to the iMac..instead of it just being white would love the imac in space grey but thats only available in the iMac Pro model

Isn’t both the same chip?
They appear to be identical per videocardz.net. The Radeon Pro 5700 XT is a mobile part, but it has the same number of cores and same clock speeds and memory bandwidth as the W5700X. So guessing it is the same Navi 10 GPU, just in different packaging.
If the Mac Pro 5700 is the same as the PC version, iMac's 5700 XT is a bit detuned compared to the PC version.

Lower power consumption( 225W vs 130W), lower clockspeed, etc.
That's what I'm talking about. Considering the design of the Mac Pro and its modules, they do not have any heat dissipation and packaging restrictions. It was very interesting to see the comparison, but I'm afraid that I can hardly wait so long.

ah!! only two thunderbolt ports?? Why Apple Why?? 🤬
Most likely, as usual, this is a lack of Core CPU lines. In fact, if the situation has not changed, then there are not even 2 Thunderbolt-3 ports, but one and a half. In previous models, the far port did not operate at full speed for the same reason.

By the way, now this is one of two key drawbacks against the background of the still holding iMac Pro 2017. In addition, all 4 Thunderbolt-3 ports regularly perform their functions, since Zion can afford it.

I didnt even think about the Affinity advantage's of a machine this powerful. Azrael is getting me psyched. Cant wait for mine. I'm in a cool floor level home-office in Oregon, so no muggy warm days here. The noise is my only concern as I look forward to unboxing mine. My last desktop was the first intel iMac, 2006ish I think, so I'm not really used to any fan noise.

Hoping to see some bench mark's. I wonder if RDNA2 will ever make it into an iMac, a soft update to the iMac Pro in the Fall or Winter might be it.

On a side note I asked Apple if I could switch the keyboard to a number keyboard (post ordering) and they told me I'd have to cancel the order and re-order, which would push me to the bottom of the pile, so I said I'd stick with the regular one. Instead I'm ordering the logi mx key's for mac today.

They sell them separate. I bought the Space Grey set separately a while ago. White keyboards do not stay clean under any circumstances around me.

I thought he had it so I clicked on it until I realised its another clickbait :)

This guy has the most annoying speech I've seen. He talks like his audience is full of stupid kids that don't even speak english. So annoying - I hope he doesn't talk like this in real life otherwise it must be so frustrating to be around him :)))))

I hope there will be 'hands on' video very soon. These 'summary' ones are nothing new :)))))

iFixit please! Wanna see the internals :)

He seems happy...

Azrael.

Please if you do, can you open it for us and take pictures of the internals? Hhahahaha kidding!
But please do some benchmarks, noise tests etc. It would be super nice to get some info :)
Much much much appreciated :)

Supposedly I’ll get my new iMac 27 2020 today. If that’s the case WOW fast

Since when it became insignificant to be able to choose your storage size when you buy a computer?

You still can configure the storage in the cheaper iMac 21.5" and the two other iMacs 27" but not the entery level 27" 2020? Specially an AIO like iMac you can't upgrade by yourself later?

You have always been able to configure the storage HDD/SSD in all iMacs 27" since 2007 but not the entery level 27" 2020?

In 2020 Apple suddenly decided to cripple the storage options in the entery level iMac 27"?

I guess you could argue that for the price of the SSD upgrade in 21.5" you can get a Tier 2 iMac 27" with bigger SSD AND a better CPU. You're right about that and in that way it makes sense but before all iMac 27" had the same size of HDD. Now they have downsized the SSD in the first model making many to pay more for an upgrade.

Does the Space Grey set fit the silver iMac? All my other devices are in Space Grey, so I would love the keyboard and mouse to be that colour too (and the iMac of course, but there's no choice there), but I couldn't find pictures or anything else telling me if this works together

Dude! Wth are you smoking? The next tier up in storage costs exactly the same as the next model that is customisable. But on top of that you get better processor so you are actually saving money by picking the middle tier.

it makes no sense since they let all the other iMacs, even the old 21.5", still be configurable except the entery level iMac 27". Makes no sense at all. You can even still configure the storage in 21.5" Dual Core. Sure it's about crippling. That forces many to buy the next level iMac 27" giving Apple more money. The tier 1 and 2 iMac 27" are almost identical otherwise.

Yeah I plan to stand pat on my 2017 5K until the "large" Apple Silicon model ships and I can do a comparison.

I expect that model probably is meant for "kiosk" installations where you have only one or two specific apps that are being run so you need no more than 256GB of storage. It also happens to hit the same $1799 price point. Best to think of it like the $1099 21.5-inch model that had a 1920x1080 display - meant for a specific task and not as a "true" member of the family.

The middle model for $200 more has a 512GB SSD and a faster CPU (each of which would probably have been a $100 upgrade on the 3.1GHz model) and the full range of upgrades - that is the true "entry level" model now.

Really tempting to pick up the stock config to hold me over until AS high end Macs show up. I guess better spending 2400 vs 3900 for the config I wanted. Or maybe just grab a Mac mini and monitor instead.
