So 5500 XT? Are you ****ing kidding me?!?
For the same price of $2,300, in 2017 one could purchase an iMac with a 580...which has the same exact graphical performance as a 5500 XT.

So after three years, while GPUs have improved by leaps and bounds, we're supposed to pay a lot of extra money if we want to enjoy those improvements?
Wow, bravo Apple! Way to be greedy  I'd like to say I'm surprised but...

The 580X was a paid option.

You now have the equivalent but in RDNA1, lower power consumption, lower thermals, better performance in most use cases for base price.

Where is the problem ????????????

So first run of cinebench and the fans already kick in. Does the iMac Pro have fans kicking in on the first run too?
Can anyone check, please?

Its weird that they are shipping it in old boxes.

580x is from the fall of 2019...
Since you didn't even know that, everything else you said can be dismissed as blind apple fanboy drivel.
Even if you're happy to pay an extra $300/500 to get the any extra GPU power compared to 3 years ago...doesn't mean anyone else wants to, or doesn't justifiably view it as highway robbery

2017 iMac had the 580
2019 had the 580X

Were these two similar in performance?

Also are the new GPUs at about the same performance level of 580?
Yep pretty much. And yes, 5500 XT is, you can look at the details through the link I posted

580X was released in March 2019 with the 2019 iMac. Not fall 2019.

It was technology dated from April 2018. CGN4.0 technology. 14 nm.

I really just don’t see where the problem is. You now get for 0$ more performance than previous high end GPU. And paid option for better ones.

Your link is far from being a reference. Check real world reviews from Anandtech or similar great reviewer. They compared RX 580 vs RDNA1 many times.

No surprise there. How long did it take to get to full speed fan mode? Since the i7-7700K, AFAIK, all the non-Pro top tier 27" models have done this within 30 seconds... which is why I returned my i7-7700K to get an i5, which I'm typing on right now.

Can you imagine? The 7700K was a quad-core model... and now we are at 10 cores.

I just did Cinebench run to compare with my 9900K. The fan stayed at idle during the full run scoring a 4150. So the 10700 is about 10% faster than the 9900K. Though possibly at the cost of the fan spinning up faster.

Sure a minor oversight in my statement.

More performance? Yes, a whopping 1%, after 36 months while the whole GPU market has improved by multiples in excess of 100%...

So in 2017 you were getting a decent deal. Now in 2020, the base price option should be at least the RX 5700 or even RX 5700 XT to make it a fair deal again. Things do not exist in a vacuum. If everyone else is getting an increase in excess of +100% for the same price while you get +1%...you are the sucker

Can you please take a minute for a little help?
Do you think that there would be a noticable performance improvement with the Radeon Pro 5700 or the next one (the XT with 16 GB) over the "old" 2017 580?

Wouldn't be more suitable to compare the high end options from 2017 to the current high end?
I think that you cannot have a clear conclusion when you are comparing the old high end GPU to the new low end one. :)

Thanks for calling me a sucker. Really appreciate.

First, any serious tech guy will not base himself on these « bench websites ». A real tech guy will go on independant reviewing website which compares the boards performance like this one : https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-radeon-rx-5500-xt-gaming-x-8-gb/27.html

To see that effectively, the RX 5500 XT is a bit better overall than the Polaris RX 580. Not that much, but still an improvement. And this doesn’t take into account the macOS driver optimization specifically for the OS, neither Metal optimization. Neither the improvements in the video decoding/encoding hardware built into RDNA1. It’s just raw stupid gaming benchmarks.

But yes, you need to pay more to get a significant improvement over to last year’s GPU offering. Just like last year you had to pay for Vega 48. At least, 5700 XT is significantly higher performer than even the Vega 56 from what I can remember. Only Vega 64 is a bit better in raw numbers, maybe even not in real world scenarios.

It‘s not new that new-gen mid-range GPU is equal or slightly above previous-gen high end architecture. It always been this.

I see you are complaining about the « range » of the gpus. 580X was « high end, because there’s an 8 », while now for the tier 3 you get a « mid-range GPU because there’s a 5 » in the name. Maybe. They could have put the 5700 as base for tier 3, 5500XT for tier 2. But it’s Tim. What do you want us do ? And the 580X was in reality a mid-range GPU, not a high end one at all. Just pay the 300 bucks it you want more, like everybody else on this planet. And stop calling every other guys on this forum suckers. Because believe me, I’m freakingly not.

Yeah that's fair to say. There's individual subcategories though to see the GPU performance under different workloads
Is there a better benchmark site you know of?

Well that's the whole point ;) We need to pay a lot more $$$ for the new "high end" AMD offerings compared to 2017. And of course remember that Vega is the really high end for which the replacement of RDNA 2.0 hasn't come out yet

Just Ordered!

First mac I've had since my 2007 MBP

* 27" i-9 10 core + 1TB SSD + 16 GB Ram = $3,724

* Delivery August 20th-27th.

They must have got a ton of orders in because yesterday it would have shipped by the 7th. lol

Gives me time to order Headphones, Audio interface, Midi keyboard, Desk, Chair

This is like Mega Christmas x20...............I haven't made music since 2013, and now I get to again. :D

What RAM do I order for this imac version? Is it the same as the 2019 and does anybody have a link. I got 16GB installed with it but I want at least another 16...maybe 32.

Order Crucial RAM or Kingston through their online validator app. Both sell certified RAM for iMac. You can’t go wrong. I prefer Crucial since they use Micron chips.

Those benchmarks are not very good.
They are illustrative and not really real case scenarios. If you want good benchmarks, you wait for Barefeats one.
Yep will be interesting to see. But since they were the only benchmarks available, they worked sufficiently to illustrate the general point. And besides, they're still very accurate for anyone that wants to use Bootcamp.
