Its an expression, not literal :)
Anyway, the new iMacs are actually cheaper than before. The fast that they axed the fusion basically reduced the price as before you had to pay more. So in this way its win win.

The entry one is basically for offices etc. where the storage is not demanding and nor is everything else.
Think of it like receptionists etc. For them this is a beast computer :)

Actually I neither smoke or drink. I guess you're talking about the price of the SSD upgrade in 21.5" and that for the price you can get a Tier 2 iMac 27" with bigger SSD AND a better CPU. You're right about that and in that way it makes sense but before all iMac 27" had the same size of HDD. Now they have downsized the SSD in the first model making many to pay more for an upgrade.

I've been back and forth on this one and I've decided to wait for the first AS this year to make up my mind. I lean towards iMac 27 with 5700XT and 2TB SSD but want to see tests etc.
Also, the first AS will show us where Apple is in terms of GPU performance (as CPU will be ok - AS will have to show us in GPU as that will be the deciding factor)

So, I can wait 2 or so more months. In fact, what I might do is to oder the iMac in the config I think I want and test it for 2 weeks to see if it fits me or I need different config.

Really tempting to pick up the stock config to hold me over until AS high end Macs show up. I guess better spending 2400 vs 3900 for the config I wanted. Or maybe just grab a Mac mini and monitor instead.

The config I want costs something like 4000$ CAD (10 core, 5700, 32 GB Crucial RAM, 1 TB SSD, 10gbps).

I can't afford this right now.

But it could be a good negotiation in my future job offer ... ;)

Ok bought the highest stock model and it will be delivered in the next 2 hours lol
Really wanted a 1tb ssd at minimum but I barely use 100gb since I have most stuff on externals and this will hold me over until the 32” iMac or Mac Pro in the next year and a half.

Thinking of getting this ram here Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL15 260-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory (HX426S15IB2/16) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7K4DV4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JGWkFb4XY8AFC

Stick with Crucial certified memory : https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/apple/imac-(retina-5k--27-inch--2019)-imac-19-1

HyperX memory won't add anything but trouble.

Now I'm hesitating between a 32GB RAM upgrade ($136.99) for a total of 40GB, or a 64GB RAM upgrade ($318.99) for a total of 72GB... I DO open a crazy ton of internet tabs :p

why is that
Because it's RAM for marketing purpose, gaming laptops, whatever that can be overclocked, thus definitively not an iMac. Crucial is certified. Kingston VALUERAM too. Stay away from hyperxuselessthing.

If you want Kingston (very good brand) : KCP426SD8/16 or KCP426SD8/32 are certified.

You just don't know where the memory chip comes from with Kingston (usually Hynix but might be other vendor) while with Crucial you are 100% guaranteed it comes from Micron. Even in desktops this is my favourite RAM brand when available. HyperX comes in second position.

How much ram you have now?

My previous iMac had 24GB DDR3 Ram (2x4GB pre-installed and 2x8GB Crucial) and I would run out at times, trying to stich panoramas in Photoshop (sometimes up to 40 x 24mpx) --- BTW, it's a bit crazy that 7 years later, the iMac (especially 3rd tier) still has the same base memory...

why not just go for 128?

2x the 64GB Crucial kit is a bit too much for my wallet. I'd rather keep the existing pre-installed RAM and supplement with only one upgrade.

Go with a 2x16 GB kit. You'll be bullet proof for a long time. 40 GB total is almost twice the capacity you had.

Well that is the key, isn't it? The 27" 5K iMac used to come with a 1TB or 2TB Fusion Drive as standard. Now they come with an SSD as standard.

Yes, the SSD capacity is smaller than the Fusion Drive capacity, but considering how much flack the Fusion Drive got on this thread and others, almost nobody would be willing to take the larger capacity of a Fusion Drive because of the HDD part and would all prefer a smaller-capacity SSD as the only drive.

So 5500 XT? Are you ****ing kidding me?!?
For the same price of $2,300, in 2017 one could purchase an iMac with a 580...which has the same exact graphical performance as a 5500 XT.

So after three years, while GPUs have improved by leaps and bounds, we're supposed to pay a lot of extra money if we want to enjoy those improvements?
Wow, bravo Apple! Way to be greedy  I'd like to say I'm surprised but...
