MBP will not be released with iPhone + AWatch event. We will get the usual iStuff and then the usual next month or so iMac, MBP and maybe new Mini.

I agree in "normal times" there would never be a Mac announcement at an iPhone event, but of course these are not "normal times" and since they are now virtual instead of in-person, time constraints aren't really an issue. So if Apple can't announce an iPhone until the end of September for whatever reason, they might link the two into one long event.

That being said, my money is on the iPhone Event on 7 September and the MacBook Pro event on 21 or 28 September.

I have the feeling the MacBook Pros were meant for WWDC, but the production issues with MiniLED and other components pushed it back. I believe Apple wants to ship these models ASAP because demand for new laptops is high and if they don't sell them ASAP, they risk losing sales to Intel Macs (or PCs) which means lower demand when they are ready as replacement cycles have already been filled. Also, with many schools looking to return to in-class/on-campus learning, having new MBPs ready close to the start of the School Year would be beneficial. So I don't see them pushing it off till mid-to-late October unless there are continued production issues.

To me, Apple Silicon transition started fast but lost its pace quickly. After a year from its announcement, we still have only one chip in 4 of the Macs. Current iMac looks nice and might be useful for casual end-user, but for me it still lacks many things and definitely needs beefier gpu.

We're not yet a year in and and any day now we'll get twice to four times as many GPUs cores with "M1X" as we have in M1 so I think Apple is doing okay with the roll-out schedule considering all the things that have not been in their control working against them.

To be fair, the last year has not been very predictable. Other components might be lacking like the mini-LED displays. I heard of biological labs that cannot get necessary plastic ware (!) and prices have gone up 3-fold for simple things like pipette tips. OK COVID-19 has put larger pressure on research but not that much. Other industries are like equally affected for key components.

Well.. we might assume its release date November 2020 and count 2 years on top of it. I was hyped like many people here thinking that Apple will finish the transition in less than 2 years. After 9 months with only one M1 SoC (possibly a A14X) and one redesign, I think it's not going that fast.

People here are thinking less than 2 years because that is what Apple said.

The large gap between chip launches is not so much of an issue because that one chip is used in so many machines. They could cover everything else except the Mac Pro with an X version (probably with some GPU options, but essentially the same chip), and then the Mac Pro with a Z version. They could have 1 year gaps and still transition in 2 years.

The global chip shortage may have changed things since the 2 year announcement, but Apple has so much buying power that it is unlikely to be at the back of the queue on availability.

We're not seeing any new Macbooks or iMacs in the summer or in September. There's almost 0 chance of this happening. Apple is most definitely going to wait until the release of MacOS Monterey; November or more realistically October.

14/16 in MBP is expected to be announced in Sept or October so it's very unlikely to see a high end iMac in 2021. Since we dont have any specific rumors about a high end iMac, maybe it will come out on next WWDC? A rumor suggested that a high end iMac is gonna share its chip with a cube Mac Pro. Kinda disappointing that they won't be able to migrate within 2 years but we'll see.

Why no 2022 on the Poll? Seems most realistic the way things are going. large imac rarely gets a mention these days.

No new info at all, but kind of sums up the thinking on what may be: (just glad to see a mention)

Yeah, that article is absolutely click-bait with little to no new information.
It talks more about the current 24" and other Macs with one paragraph about the larger iMac.

According to Bloomberg, the larger iMac was “paused” so that Apple could get the 24-inch iMac out. No ship date for the larger iMac has been set, with several reports speculating that it could ship at the end of this year. However, the industry is faced with a semiconductor shortage, which will affect when the new iMac will be available since Apple is likely to give the MacBook Pro priority. As for the price, it will likely fall in line with the pricing of the current 27-inch iMac, which starts at $1,799 since Apple kept similar pricing to the 21.5-inch iMac when it launched the 24-inch model.

Ironically, I may be getting office space, which means after waiting all this time for an iMac "pro" m series, (since I currently work out of my home),I am now looking at the MacBook pro m1x since I would want to take the machine back and forth with me each day I go in.

would putting a suped-up mac mini pro (m1x) in a backpack each day be ludicrous? I would use the MacBook pro in clamshell mode most of the time depending on how many displays it can support once it does ship.

Im really wondering how powerful the GPU of a new big iMac is going to be.

The M1X is rumored to have 16 or 32 GPU cores

The Mac Pro is rumored to have 64 or 128 GPU cores.

If we extrapolate the performance by simply multiplying the current M1 8 core GPU , we would get the following Metal scores:
M1 8c - 21.168
M1X 16c - 42.336
M1X 32c - 84.672
M1X 64c - 169.344
M1X 128c - 338.688

The current iMac with 5700XT has a score of 60.000.

So if the new MacBook Pro get a 32core option, it would be more powerful than the best iMac.

So Apple could just put that same M1X in the new iMac, and have better performance than the last, but would it also be possible they put a 64core in it?
