Im really wondering how powerful the GPU of a new big iMac is going to be.

The M1X is rumored to have 16 or 32 GPU cores

The Mac Pro is rumored to have 64 or 128 GPU cores.

If we extrapolate the performance by simply multiplying the current M1 8 core GPU , we would get the following Metal scores:
M1 8c - 21.168
M1X 16c - 42.336
M1X 32c - 84.672
M1X 64c - 169.344
M1X 128c - 338.688

The current iMac with 5700XT has a score of 60.000.

So if the new MacBook Pro get a 32core option, it would be more powerful than the best iMac.

So Apple could just put that same M1X in the new iMac, and have better performance than the last, but would it also be possible they put a 64core in it?

Based on your post, I could see the larger iMac having a standard 16 GPU core.

Maybe, the 32 GPU core would be available as a built to order option.

I'm really wondering how powerful the GPU of a new big iMac is going to be.

We know from benchmarks that the M1 GPU scales linearly with core count - the 7 core model is 87.5% as fast as the 8 core model so the addition of each core improves performance by 12.5%. Now, if it will continue to scale linearly to 16, 32, 64 or 128 cores remains to be seen, but if it does, then Jade C-Chop would have double to GPU performance of the M1 and Jade C-Die would double that.

This time around, I have the budget for as many cores and as many GPUs as they can put into the thing.

Only this time around, getting the highest-end config will not result in a fan blowing at top speed most of the time I am doing anything of consequence.

Take that Intel.

Quiet fan amd performance is my dream.
If we can get double the M1 GPU speed, I will be happy.

I'm lucky that I don't need an upgrade as my 2017 i7 is still doing okay for non-VM use. But if I don't hear anything by the fall, I will likely buy a 2020 i7 5K as my main machine so I can keep BootCamp for work.

I do plan to replace my 2017 16" MacBook Pro and 2018 12.9" iPad Pro with a MacBook Air with MiniLED when those launch (likely with M2) so I will have an M capable Mac to use for non-work.

Then in 2-3 years I can get the M-series 32" iMac.

More rumors - more confusion.

I don't need to pull the trigger on replacing my 2017 iMac 5K before October / November, so I shall continue to patiently wait.

I feel like we won't see a new larger iMac until 2022, and that kinda sucks. I really need an upgrade.
This thread is a testament to how much time is involved with waiting for iMac redesign.

I did find it interesting that Apple has delayed releasing a larger iMac model to way later, but it does promote 24" M1 iMac sales a lot more, almost creating two viable iMac tiers for the next few years.

I have a feeling the new imacs will be announced in Dec.

Delivering "late" dec.

Meaning a few will ship on Dec 31.

I really doubt you’ll have to wait until 2022. But if by chance we do it likely will be released in early 2022.
Apple has to strategically roll out Apple Silicon products in approx. 6 month announcements so to meet demand as well as not alienate earlier buyers. The worst mistaken belief was that WWDC was going to be a time where there was a chance that M1X or M2 SoC would be available so soon and incorporated into Macs while the Nov M1 Macs as well as the very recent late May M1 24" iMac was just trying to meet demand. The next logical announcement is late November with availability December, but being like the present iMac rollout, some orders taking up to 2 months. After that you would have another announcement sometime April/May setting up WWDC 2022 to be now able to show the transition mostly completed.

if the M1X is ready for the 14&16 MBPs then I see no reason why we can't get bigger iMac at the same time. Unless the bigger iMac is getting something even better.
Seeing that all products need to transition by WWDC 2022 (2 years) then I guess we could see M2X in Spring event and new Mac Pro at WWDC with even some further modifications.

Yes, I think there may be multiple machines launched at the same time to coincide with the release of a higher tier chipset (M1X or whatever it is called).

The Apple press release when announcing the transition said the 2 years starts with the first system shipment, not the announcement. It was made much clearer when moving to Intel that the transition period start with the first product.

Apple Silicon transition: "Developers can start building apps today and first system ships by year’s end, beginning a two-year transition" https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/06/apple-announces-mac-transition-to-apple-silicon/

Oh I see. I misunderstood then :)

In that case there is still M3X in play then which is the Mac Pro :)

I am hoping "Big Brother iMac" will be on the same SoC as the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros and there is nothing holding it back supply-chain-wise so it can be launched at the same event.

If they want to release an "iMac Pro" version in 2022 with JadeC-2Die and JadeC-4Die, more power to them, but I'd really like the "baseline" machine released this September / October so I can finalize whether I buy it or go Intel iMac 5K for one more generation.

Only one problem with getting the intel machines now is having severe buyers remorse when the AS machines get released plus they won’t be able to take advantage of some feature of the O/S that will only available on the AS machines. My 2012 machine is still working fine for what I need so will continue to wait. It’s not that much of a big deal it just means I’ve been able to utilise my current machine and definitely got my money’s worth out of it. Will sell it to help pay for the new one when it come out.

I am only considering Intel because if my current WFH goes permanent (which it is looking fairly likely) then I really need a machine that can use Boot Camp as my workflow is too Windows-centric and that is not going to be an option under Apple Silicon.

I am going to buy a 14" ASi MacBook Pro when they are released to replace my 2017 15.4" Intel MacBook Pro and my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9" so I will have an ASi Mac for macOS and in a few years I'll have a better idea of if I can either adapt my workflow to macOS (in which case I will get the next generation of "iMac Pro") or I will be in a position to replace my Alienware gaming PC with a new one and I can configure that for my Windows workflow, as well.

Chances the Mac Mini "pro" will have something the Macbook pro 16" does not has spec wise?

I think (but I hope i am wrong) the mac min pro will have that 1 extra (for a total of 4) thunderbolt ports.

While the 16" macbook will only have 3 of those ports.

Discuss.

I expect the "Mac mini Pro" to be like the Intel model, except with the iMac's MagSafe adapter and Ethernet in the power brick instead of on the chassis. So 4xTB3/USB4, 2x USB-A and HDMI.

really really hoping the macbook 16" has 4 TB ports. totally don't expect it too though.

It always seems like docks (which would seem to solve) the problem have issues. Maybe less so with the M1s so maybe a dock will have to do.

Does a beefy dock like 80-90w, have enough "power" where i could route all items thru a dock and have the dock be the single TB device on the macbook itself?

Or will there be power issues?
