Yes in that there have been rumors there will be a new iMac in the 23" form factor and it could be replacing the 21.5" model.

But in that case the 21 would not stick around. I was speaking more from the view point of "we get 27 inch now and 21 will come/be replaced by 23 at a later date"... but would that make any sense? Since they already did not bump the lowest tier last year i believe.

Random thing about my current iMac wich i actually am happy with.
The finder freezing issue has not been fixed. This is something they managed to fix on my MacBookPro long before it was even addressed in the patch notes. AND for some reason, and this has been going on for years now, sometimes my iMac dos not recognize it's Keyboard while booting up. The problem is solved by just booting it up two, three, four times and eventually it is seen... but it's hella annoying. I wish they would fix these features (or i would be able to fix them when i reinstall the entire thing) so i can give it to my dad without giving him a headache about it.

Yes, I would expect the 23" iMac to replace the 21.5" iMac in the line-up. There is no technical reason why Apple could not upgrade the 21.5" to 9th generation with the 2019 refresh (the CPUs and RAM are socketed) so I am guessing it remained "stuck" on 8th generation for pricing reasons (as in they could get cheaper CPUs and RAM to keep the price+markup down). Same reason the least expensive 27" models ($1799/$1999) are still on 8th generation CPUs, as well, I imagine. The more expensive $2299 is on 9th generation.

Might be. Well see. I just hope the wait shifts over to delivery times tomorrow. Would love to finally move on.

Today I sold my i7, 512gb, 580 2017 iMac good value. In Turkey we have a 2 years of warranty. And I don‘t like to use out of warranty devices. Espacially expensive devices. I hope we’ll get new iMac‘s in WWDC.

I'm still rocking a 2009 iMac. DVD drive is gone. Wifi doesn't work anymore. Dirt and dust all behind the screen. Been waiting a few years now for a redesign, but don't think I can wait much longer. Whatever the refresh is, I'm taking it.

I am expecting a full switch. Apple is so good at creating their own chips in terms of power and energy consumption, it's probably going to be a massive blow away.
I don‘ t think that makes sense for Apple from a business point of view. Too risky for a full Mac market conversion all at the start. We’re not talking about iPhones. I expect it will go like the last attempt at Intel “core m” processors - lighter duty, aimed more at the convergence point of Mac and mobile.

Also, iMac wasn’t rumored to go miniLED next year. That was an iMac Pro rumor. Probably 2+ years away from miniLED in iMac. That, alongside Gurman and others who have spoken of a bigger change, lead me to the conclusion this is going to be more that a specs bump. How much more is the question.

I think you're right; the transition to ARM, if it happens, will be pushed to light duty MacBook first. I don't see it on desktop for at least a year but more likely 2+ if it even happens. Makes it tricky, I mean do you hold out to be ahead when/if the transition occurs or put your cash down on 14nM intel now knowing you are going to be on the outer in a couple of years?

I see spec bumps and possibly a move to 23" (from 21.5') now, with a possible iMac Pro redo Q4 (December release) with maybe miniLED on that machine. ARM MacBook Air Q2 2021, then, maybe, a WWDC 2021 announcement of new consumer iMac with trickle-down tech from the new iMP. All pure speculation of course...

Wednesday and no update.. the wait continues...

Everyone keeps setting themselves up for repeated disappointment. Now with the crisis happening in the US, I’m now less confident of an ”imminent” release. And that goes for any product in the pipeline, not just the iMac.

Should I buy an iMac Pro versus an iMac since we don't know when they are coming out? Or is the iMac Pro processors behind the curve as well?

If you can get a base iMac Pro for closer to $4000 (or less) via some of the refurb deals that have been running as of late, I think it would be a solid choice as it has great cooling, excellent CPU and GPU performance, fantastic SSD performance and four TB3 ports instead of 2.

Agreed. The move from Intel to ARM is likely to be painful if history is an indicator. PowerPC anyone? I personally won’t be on the leading edge of that change, whenever it occurs. I’ll wait 2 or 3 years. I still have an Apple Watch series 0 that is painful AF to use, but my series 4 is brilliant. We bought one of those intel core M Macbooks in 2015. Similar experience. It’s always like that.

True. The first model of a new product like this is generally not top notch. It’s always the step 0 of an iterative process.

The move to ARM has started years ago spearheaded by the iPad. Apps needs to be reprogrammed somewhat and recompiled but the iPad has already started this movement. I highly doubt the switch to ARM means a 1:1 port of MacOS. It is far easier to let the two product lines coexist until the apps for ARM based "Mac" has matured sufficiently or if ARM makes x86 embarrassing to use in terms of performance. Why would they make a halo product like the MP if they decided to kill the x86 line (Mac) the year after? No, the MP is an investment for Apple and if upgraded the design will hold for 2-3 decades.

The MP functions extremely poorly as a halo product for iPads. A 20-27 inch desktop "iPad" driven by a ARM based CPU suitable Apple GPU not intended for a mobile phone, 16-32 Gb RAM, 4 Tb SSD, a scaled down afterburner card (suspect this already exist in the A12Z chip) and four USB-C ports, would be a better halo product and would blur the line to a traditional iMac. Add to that the rumours of FCP X and Logic for iPad is soon coming. Hence, the ARM transition can come from "below".

DrRadon, it is Wednesday the 3:rd...I hope you are right in your predictions. I confess being a bit pessimistic at this point.

After yesterday’s social media blackout the chances really are down even if they ever planed to do it today. I have seen a lot more than just android and ps5 announcing to move their announcements. cyberpunk also had a presentation going. Biggest release on my (limited) radar still alive would be a new the sims 4 expansion on Thursday I think.
We will only have to wait up to 11 hours to find outing it happens or not. I doubt anything beyond a very very unnoteworthy bump would happen today.

Just teasing ;) . Now is not the time to release anything even if an iMac would fly completely under the radar.

I suppose its not. But... i would really like it to be for all possible selfish and global happiness reasons. xD

Last week: "We might actually be able to prevent a second wave."
This week: "Hold my beer!"

The riots and protests will probably calm down in the next two weeks. But i even have seen protests all over Europe, Paris yesterday with 10.000 people being the biggest one. It feels almost certain that two weeks from now the media will be all over the "second wave" pointing the fingers at the protesters. (not taking any sides here for reasons of being a tech discussion, just fairly certain these three things will happen)

It's almost like you somehow have to very carefully throw in your news announcements between the almost certain media spikes around catastrophe in the next two to six weeks. And by than it's almost election time in the US...

TBF I think the 'second wave' discussion may not be as big of a factor as you'd imagine as the UK was already seemingly moving away from the practical discussions around 'the little green $#!T that shall not be named' in to politicised chaos over 'the guy whose name may trigger a porn censorship'.

But I do think that Apple may end up quietly releasing some updates as it seems the stock for 27inch iMacs is completely dried up in most 3rd party resellers.

In the UK, John Lewis, Curry's, Selfridges, Very, Amazon, and KRCS are all either showing sold out or extended delivery dates of nearly a month suggesting that the launch really is imminent. I'm not sure how much longer Apple would sustain the low stock levels.
