But let's see. After some initial research on the state of things in the Androidverse, I can only hope that the hardware situation improves in the next two or three years (among others, there's really a disturbing lack of smaller phones with decent tech, there).
Size is a problem these days for sure. I went from the original iPhone SE to a Samsung Galaxy S10e two years ago. Unfortunately the S10e is no longer being made and nothing of that quality is being made in that size. Everything seems to be huge and somewhat narrow now. Not sure what I will get when I need to replace the S10e.

Whatever happened to there being a middle grey area? Yes, this is definitely a privacy issue and there have been other privacy issues with Apple, but they also do A LOT of good things in regards to privacy. So maybe, it's not just all or nothing.
I know the west has gone that way where something or somebody is either super awesome or super horrible. But it just find this way of thinking far too tiring.

Too many have become jaded with the never ending “OMG!!!!” headlines and video snippets. We’ve adopted.

Here’s how I view it:

You’re not allowed to bring weapons onto an airplane obviously, so they have to check your bags first. But wait, these are my personal belongings! I mean, I know I don’t have any weapons, but can’t they just trust me? Why am I treated like a criminal before I’ve done anything wrong? Can’t they just check my bags once I’m on the plane? Once my bag is on the plane, they can go through it all they want, just not before hand.

In this example, the plane is iCloud and the stuff in your bag is what you’ve chosen to put into it.

Turning off iCloud Photos is like canceling your trip. Nothing is checked because you’re not at the airport getting on a plane.

Bottom line, don’t collect CP and nobody will ever view your photos. 100% privacy

You keep espousing different rationalizations while missing the point those of us who are against this are making. Keep trying and maybe …

In this latest, the TSA is searching in the Airport (call it Cloud) and not searching in our house (call it Device).

That's about as tortured an analogy as ever I've seen

What Apple's proposing would be more like stationing the TSA in my home so they could examine my bags if I'm heading to the airport.

Bottom line: If I don't collect weapons nobody will ever view my stuff. 100% privacy

This is true though hah

Apple doesn't receive any information about your photo library until they get 30 positive vouchers. Therefore, if there's no CP on your device, Apple doesn't get a single hint about your photo library. 100% privacy.

Those that collect CP can have their privacy invaded for all I care.

This won’t speed up nor slow down my current withdrawal from Apple. What I will not do is take Apple’s word any longer that they care about my privacy.
we actually owe apple a thank you for ripping the veil off of their privacy shtick, we now know the truth and can act accordingly … and apple WAS likely one of the best at privacy, this should give us all pause for thought

the odds are stacked against us with regard to privacy, all we can do now is fight our solitary guerrilla wars and create our own privacy in whatever ways we can

No it’s not 100% privacy. So you’re going to the airport but in advance I’m coming to your house to check for weapons. Maybe you’re OK with with this but most would not be. Your argument that basically don’t have something illegal then you have nothing to fear. That’s an old and tired argument used by people to take away rights. I would totally support Apple if they said they were going to scan iCloud. Is their server and they have the right to do it. There is no expectation of privacy on the Internet or on someone else’s computer/server. There is an expectation of privacy on your own device

Since I only have memes on my iCloud I do not care.
It’s not about what you have on iCloud or what you don’t have on iCloud. It’s about the government searching your phone and using Apple to do it. Granted it’s for a noble cars but is that the only reason. You’d have to be a pretty disgusting person to say do you want people to have CSAM so no one wants that. See that’s them being smart. You’re not supporting CSAM are you so it’s OK if we search your phone… I mean you’re not one of those people

If any of you think anything you own is private you are living in a dream world. All your credit info... Health.... Movement, ect. Think hard what is not electronically controlled now?
Of course everyone knows we’re being tracked to a certain extent but I think people just aren’t happy when a company like Apple who claims to be privacy focused just straight up said hey we’re scanning your iPhone. I think if Google did this everyone just would’ve laughed and says yeah well that’s to be expected. It’s just Apple using this to install a back door on the iPhone. I’m disappointed but in another sense I understand because I know they’re under tremendous pressure from countries like the USA and China to give them access. I canceled my Apple one subscription that would have renewed on the 2nd. I’m going to try Amazon photos as an iCloud alternative.

LOL What?

I've been using various flavors of Linux on servers, desktops, and laptops ever since Red Hat 5 in 1997. I've never used MS-Windows, other than as-required to support my job. I've never used Mac OS, save for a very brief period, on a Mac laptop, sometime in ±2000 (?) and now likely never will.
I've used every OS in the book. Linux is very lacking.

The S20 FE 5G isn't that big really. It's actually not nearly as wide as my Galaxy A01. It's just the right size given almost no bezel at all. Being a year old now, it's got to have gone down in price. I remember the S10 looking like an oversized remote control but it wasn't as minimal on bezel as the S20 FE is. I think it's actually smaller than the bog-standard pricier S20 itself.

Also, nothing stopping you from getting a good used Galaxy S5 or S7. Not everything has to be the newest to be good. I wish more felt that way.

Why do you keep arguing this? It's simple: People. Don't. Want. Scanning. On. Their. Devices. Why do you keep arguing "But...?" There are no "buts." People. Don't. Want. Scanning. On. Their. Devices.

Now you asked "Is Apple responsible if...?" Was that simply a ploy to re-energize this thread so you could again make the same arguments you have been? That people should be ok with be because...? Because, if so, I'll just wander back out again.
I want them to scan me.

Apple (or any other company) has NEVER reversed course at all. Not for Antennagate, Bendgate, or even iOS 7+. To do so would admit to a mistake (companies hate to admit mistakes, just ask Boeing about the 737 MAX software) and reversing course is to tech reviewers 'killing progress' as heaven forbid anyone prefer android 2.3 to Android whatever it is now. Honestly. The phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' is unheard of to anyone younger than 20 today.

Idiocracy, they live, and 1984 should be required reading/watching at schools these days.
But this isn't a mistake. It's the right thing to do.

I feel sorry for anyone who's into either DeviantArt or Cosplay. Can you imagine what kind of false-positives would come up from just photos of cosplay at a Star Trek convention?!

In your opinion. I've found it suitable.

Well, enjoy, then. Personally, I'd prefer not to be electronically felt-up every time I took a photo.
That's not how it works. Don't make up stuff to prove your point.

Are photos of Star Trek cosplay usually flagged as cp? How does that work?

Can someone please answer me, is this scan only going through iCloud and iMessage or local storage too? I use iCloud and have almost everything synced, but photos. I’ve never enabled photos with iCloud which is why I always set every new phone as “new” so it doesn’t enable the sync

This one guy above can't understand that it won't. stop. at. child. porn. It will lean to other, more controversial measures. Just like the whole covid fiasco.
