Just because it's my only option doesn't mean I have to think it's good or that I have to like it.

Not a single new addition to Windows 11 benefits me (My graphics card doesn't support DirectStorage, I don't have an HDR monitor).

I didn't think it ever mattered to Microsoft how I used Windows either. I know it doesn't matter to them. As long as I'm using it. That doesn't mean I have enjoy using it. It doesn't mean I have to accept Windows as good.

Windows is a dumpster fire in my opinion and it's been a dumpster fire since as long as I've been using it (Windows 98). Because it's my only option to play a few games with mouse and keyboard isn't going to change that.
And again, it is doing for you what the others will not, so if you are enjoying the games, then you are benefiting from what Windows provides.

... a non-starter, sounds like. Yikes!

I expect I'll go to a Pixel 5a and tune out as much Google as I can, or load LineageOS, GrapheneOS, or CalyxOS on it. After I upgrade the home Linux server I'm going to fire up an OwnCloud instance on it. That's what I'll use for cloud storage.
I went unRAID with nextcloud....

Are the spec really that bad? Guess I will pass as well.
It’s a quad core 1.5 GHz processor. 3 GB of RAM, but if Pure OS is half as light as Raspbian, 3 GB is plenty. On my Raspberry Pi 4, I can run a ton of chromium browser tabs and 5 songs in Audacity and not hit 1 GB of RAM usage. Linux also doesn’t have the weight gain that MacOS and Windows suffer from.

Yeah, that doesn't mean I have to like Windows, respect Windows, or praise Windows. It doesn't mean I can't talk about how much I dislike Windows.

I benefit as a consumer from child labor. Doesn't mean I think it's good thing or that I'm okay with it.

My biggest problem will be weaning myself off of Applepay/Handoff/Continuity/Airdrop/iMessage/watch. I don't think any of the competition is anywhere near as polished or integrated for those features. I have 3 Macs and 2 iPads to replace along with an iPhone.

Thanks Tim Apple.

Same. Taking it slow. My goal is to quit my Apple addiction long term, so slow is ok.

I've disabled Siri as a first step. Disabling iMessage will take a bit more planning.

I'm also using wired headphones instead of Airpods because Linux support for bluetooth mics isn't good yet.

NextCloud looks promising, but after several days of trying to get the plugin in TrueNas to install (at all), I'm going to have to take another look at it.
Appreciate the tip. On desktop I've been comfortable without cloud sync/backups except for Apple Notes and Messages.

For notes, I continue to like Standard Notes. FOSS, with self-hosting options, E2EE.

For Messages I have no good solution. Switching to Signal for the majority of my communications I guess. SMS for the rest?

....and it's one of our few options for the future. If we don't support this stuff today, future options won't be any better. Mac switchers can support the Linux ecosystem with their dollars.

Don't support something thats a total rip-off. The price to performance for the Librem 5 is insane. The PinePhone is a MUCH better deal. Base model costs only $150 and it runs Linux. Librem 5 sets you back $800 with a slower CPU.

Child labor... Windows... Not quite in the same league. I just find sentiments such as yours amusing. Why use something you hate? And if you use it, hard to justify claiming to hate it... You know what they say, fine line between hate and love.

Yes, but it runs full desktop Linux. Plug it into a monitor/keyboard/mouse and you suddenly have a full Linux desktop. No other phone can do that out of the box, not even the iPad.

It stands for more than specs. It's a bold move, like the original iPhone was in 2007. Sure, the iPhone 2g was junk, but it was totally different to anything else out there. Look where continued investment took it.

As for a phone that sucks as a phone, I think many smartphones today qualify. Nobody can hear me on my iPhone X, but I don't make phone calls anymore so I'd rather get battery life back. The Galaxy Notes are so comically large you might as well hold a tablet up to your ear.

Sure one can use a keyboard and mouse and run it as a desktop. But it's not a good experience. It's slow. REALLY slow. The CPU is absolutely terrible. Along with that there is no hardware acceleration for graphics. None at all. Its a POS. Honest.

Sounds good to me, as long as people are using open source solutions.

Because I hate playing first person shooters with a controller more than I hate Windows.

I don't really understand why in your world "not having the option for something else = you must like and enjoy what you're using".

If you don't like my child labor example, let's try it this way then: I benefit from Apple not allowing an easy method to sideload applications other than the App Store. It benefits me in terms of privacy, security, and convenience. That doesn't mean I have to suddenly think sideloading apps is a terrible thing, and it doesn't mean that if I support sideloading apps I should switch to Android.

The world is not black and white.

I just see a certain irony in saying you hate something you are using. Enjoy your gaming. I am off to see what is new in Windows 11. Then I will boot up my KDE Linux machine because... well I like them all.

Most of the sites have an option where they ask for donations. I use PayPal and donate that way. I try to make at least a yearly donation to my most often used software, and a onetime donation for anything new that I try.
Good to know! I experimented with GitHub Sponsors yesterday to give $5/month to a project.

Also, surprised how hard it is to donate to these projects. To donate to Ubuntu I had to dig around through forums. Finally it's the "download" page after you download Ubuntu where I could send them $ thru Paypal. Room for improvement. Take my money!

I don't think so. Microsoft isn't into screwing over developers. However, I do all my donation on the actual sites where I obtain the software.
I don't, and wouldn't, do any development for Apple or Microsoft. But yeah Apple is just shameless in the way they milk developers.

PSA for those looking for/discussing end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) cloud storage: use any cloud storage you want (E2EE or not) paired with Cryptomator. It encrypts your files within the cloud so that whoever your cloud storage provider is (Apple, Google, Dropbox, etc.) can’t read the contents.

It’s cheaper than E2EE cloud storage providers and, more importantly, you don’t have to trust that those providers are actually E2EEing your data since they’re mostly all closed source if I recall correctly. With Cryptomator, you know for sure it’s E2EE.

I’ve been using it with the free storage tier of Google Drive and it’s been perfect. Free Mac app and one time purchase for iOS/iPadOS.

The only downside is if you’re looking for automatic photo backup/sync like iCloud Photos. You can’t replace that functionality with this. But if you just need cloud storage, it’s an excellent option.

Went to privacy.apple.com to collect the file from my second Apple ID and ran into ...
1630627487069.png
Will have to come back to get this likely....
This second id I created a couple of years ago for business.
It is significantly smaller than my long term id but still has significant data in it.
Included is around 80GB of photos. I have never backed up photos - that I am aware of - with this id.

More to come ...

Update: I have noticed that password, or FaceID protected files (like in Notes) are not included in the download.
Wonder what else is missing ...
