Which Mac is the question?

The recent M Series Macs like M1, M1 Max etc.. or Intel macs.
I only compared it to Intel macs and especially Docker was very slow compared to Docker in Linux. Hopefully I’ll switch to an M1 MBP in the future.
oh my the Taskbar is 100% worse in windows 11. Every thing is slow or freezes but the only good thing are the animations.
This whole thing is a disaster. No excuses, it should have never been released in this state.
I am not sure if it still shows in Win11 (I am on a Win10 system right now) but can you hit start and type reliability? There was a "tool" called Reliability Monitor in the old Control Panel that would show various failures or warnings. Maybe the cause of Explorer (which manages the taskbar/start menu) crashing/hanging would show there.

Shoot maybe even DWM errors may show there, though I am beginning to think it may just be Explorer that is crapping itself instead of DWM (I feel like if DWM dies it forces you to log off in the process).
The search freezes, lags, it’s terrible imo

Like @exoticSpice you probably have something wrong with your system as well. :(

there is a delay sometimes to open start and typing. The whole OS feels as though it's a beta.

Search on Windows is hilarious. It simply doesn't work. I use the workaround with Everything service + Ueli.
Way better, but still, nowhere near Spotlight or anything on Linux side.

A few days ago I've tried to start Terminal on Windows 11. I simply can't open the application. At all. Start menu finds it, but when I click on it, nothing happens. Like it doesn't recognize that I've clicked on it.

I've since installed Terminal Preview via MS Store, and use that instead. And W11 is really slow on 4K screens. At least on laptops. Animations are really choppy, and if CPU is in use, even typing is slow. M1 MBP is great in that regard, but I've somehow lost my love for MacOS. Sticking with PopOS as my main OS for now. But for some apps, I have to use Mac or boot into Windows.

Yes. It’s running Windows. I’ll fix that by switching back to a Mac this year
I couldn't do that. That would 1) be limiting myself voluntarily and caving to Apple's control (which is worse than MS these days) 2) giving support for Apple's anti-repair pro-consumerism mindset which I despise.

Can't do that. My own beliefs in being good to the planet and having my eyes opened by Louis Rossman are too strong.

Windows search on a computer is kinda weird
BUT
Searching for a solution to a minor windows problem online is horrible.
the first step: Go To System Manufacture
there is not a system manufacture

the worst was trying to figure out how to check a Lenovo security risk laptop 2 weeks ago
well they said this:
  1. Search for your product by name or machine type.
  2. Click Drivers & Software on the left menu panel.
I could not perform step1 and felt 2 foot tall trying to repair an unbroken Lenovo.

Both of which will go away if Apple is forced by EU and US governments to make their platform more open.

It's best not to influenced by youtubers. People like Louis thrive on outrage and hate.

I completely agree Apple is against repair and treating their customers fairly. You don't need some youtuber telling you that. It's in Apple's DNA. Louis started working on Macs in 2006 and let me tell you their control and need to do their way and anti repair has been a thing since 1984.

MS is not any better. But sadly PC gaming only works thru Windows and that to me is dangerous. Linux gaming is good but it's not plug and play like Windows is.

At least MS is much better than it was in the 90s. Windows is a bad OS but the the compatibility is awesome.

If Linux had the same compatiblity of apps like Windows and ease of use, techies would switch instantly.

IT's not just Apple's DNA. Everyone copies Apple. Samsung, Google, etc. It's not sustainable. Instead of encouraging folks to keep what they got and offer things like removable batteries and such, 'just buy a new one!'. and when you try to complain about it, their supporters retort 'But! Muh Recycling!' as if recycling is the solution. Recycling still takes resources. Not long ago, people believed in reduce, reuse and recycle, in THAT order!

People also cared a lot more about their things too, taking better care of and maintaining them. For some reason I still cannot fathom, people became lazy and are hardly self-sufficient anymore.

Companies no longer care about catering to customer demand. Instead, they care about shareholders. Again, not long ago, back when Ames, Kmart, Woolco and the like still existed, a company built their reputation on making quality goods. If someone bought a TV at Kmart and it failed within a year, they refused to ever buy another of that brand or at Kmart ever again. Making things last used to be what made or broke a company. I do not understand what changed so suddenly to make customers complacent over buying disposable junk and keep buying said disposable junk.

I cannot support Apple. I am not influenced in my decision so much by Louis, but I know now that I'm not alone in my beliefs, and he has exposed other companies that engage in anti-consumer behavior as well that I never considered and saved me a ton of grief.

As for 1984, didn't Apple or Steve Jobs actually WANT customers to open up their Apple II computers and actually believed in hacking stuff? Apple then was a totally different company than it is today. Today they're the same company they criticized Microsoft of being in the 1990s. In fact, they have become the Big Brother they criticzed and rallied against in the 1984 ad

That is why the PC Industry must remain open. It is the only tech industry that is open. Open hardware and open software.

I could never roll back to Windows 10. Windows 10 still exists at work and it always P****es me off to use it. Today, the notifications from 'Phone Link' didn't come in because Windows once again decided to close the app (but left the most memory intensive browser, Microsoft Edge, open!) and in Windows 10, and UNLIKE Windows 11, phone notifications won't come in unless the app is open or minimized. Phone Link gives Action Center notifications on Windows 11 with or without the app running.

Windows 11 is truly better in every way. UI design, reliability, and doing what I expect it to do. Windows 10 is always half-baked, idiot proof and annoying.

It's not just the PC industry. It's all industry. From shopping, to cars, to tech, it's all homogenized, boring, collectivist crap. Nothing is moving forward. We are complacent in stagnation. If anything, I'd give everything just to get a DeLorean and go back to either 2010 or even better, 1979. Back when people cared about what they owned, bought it outright, and didn't need new things every year or so. People bought a TV once, a phone once, etc. No one treated tech as if it were fast fashion. When stores such as Kmart, Woolco, and many more existed. Variety was a thing.

Good grief, I cannot imagine living 40 more years in this....dystopia. Idiocracy was a documentary. We are living this endless cycle of consuming, trashing, and consuming again. People truly believe they need a phone every few years. Their phone today does the same things their phone a decade ago did! My God, Jim! There are people who end relationships over 'green bubble texts' for crying out loud!

When I look at the things like the Steam Deck, it makes me happy. Valve is an amazing company because it is not beholden to shareholders.

I find it to be opposite. The taskbar is ruined, the action center is gone.

Linux is my next option with a KVM VM running Windows 11 just for games in the near future for me.

The action center isn't gone. It still shows your notifications, only now it's not cluttered with a quick settings panel that fits a phone/tablet more than a laptop. The taskbar and start menu are perfect, no longer cluttered with gimmicky live tiles that waste resources.

Valve was an amazing company who made excellent games. Today they're just another corporation who forces updates on everyone whether they like it or not. Took a lot of work just to stop Steam from forcing updates down my throat.

They're updates that have broken mods, changed UI, and were never asked for. I don't believe in updates. I paid for the games, so I should be able to choose whether or not I update them or not.

If the steam client isn't broken and works fine, stop forcing updates. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. People always criticize MS for how they handle updates, but not Steam. Go figure!

Steam Deck also gets updates every week. More updates does not mean "shoving updates" if they actually improve or fix issues.

Take the Steam Deck it got tons of updates but it's got great features that Nintendo takes years to add or haven't even added yet.

Just a few days ago Valve added a lock screen and some others like Windows 11 support and keyboard support in 21 languages. These updates are useful.

more useful updates = good

bad bloated updates like MS = bad

That's why I won't be buying the darned thing. I can't stand updates breaking mods, or changing UI and making me relearn where everything got moved to. I'm sick of this behavior.
