Wow, I'm shocked, this is the closest you've come to critize apple. You're in danger of losing your uber-fanboy status. You really should be defending MobileMe as an innovative, market altering product from apple that's really misunderstood by those who are unaware of the intricacies of that product :p

Frankly, The Push and syncing services work very well. I use iDisk regularly and work off the cloud. Syncing has been fine for about a year now. But really, MobileMe is nothing special for $100/year. I use it because it just ties everything together in terms of Push services, Calendars and iDisk across all my Apple devices. This could have been delivered for $50/year, but if $100 is what the market can allegedly bear, then so be it. I don't think I'm getting my money's worth at this point. It's nice they made Find My iPhone free, though.

I just hope there's a lot more to this service in the future. It's got a sick amount of potential, especially in terms of the UI.

My big concern about "Mango" is the fact that unlike iOS on the iPhone, the cellphone companies could block this update to all early model phones that use Windows Phone 7, forcing users to buy all-new cellphones. People forget that the HUGE advantage of the iPhone: Apple forced the cellphone carriers to cede all control of software updates to Apple, so the company essentially controls all updates, which hugely benefits the user when it comes to things like bug fixes and OS-level feature additions.

Nahh, Mango is coming to all Windows phones. The carriers can legally only hold off on the update for one update. So once the update after Mango is out, the carriers have to release Mango.

The latest rumor is that Mango already went RTM, and Microsoft/"the carriers" have 4 months of QA testing before a unified release in September.

Let me think...

- MMS
- Tethering
- Multitasking
- Push email
- Third party apps/App Store
- Cut, copy and paste
- Video recording
- Video calling (also due to hardware, but still)
- Folders
- Camera zoom

I'm sure there's more, but these are some pretty big things Apple left out of iOS for the entire first year of its' existence - some (like multitasking), took three years to implement. Remember, they even announced push notifications for 2.0, but it took until 3.0 to get it working properly. So maybe, before complaining about WP7, you should remember that Apple managed to take a hell of a long time to implement multitasking, even though people had been asking for it for years. You can also bring up the fact that WP7 is still lacking features present in iOS, and maybe even a thing or two on my list above, but in the end they didn't take three years to give us the feature you're knocking them for. Who did take three years, though? Oh that's right, Apple.

And it was still a game-changer. That's because the iPhone introduced the paradigm. It brought so much more to the table that Apple could easily get away with taking their time. It was a very different landscape around 2007-2008. The competition was absolutely nowhere and the iPhone as it was on its own just blew everyone away. Total sea-change. You didn't need MMS or multitasking when you had a hot-**** touch-screen UI that captivated everyone and a platform built around apps, when no one else had what Apple had. We thought MMS would have been nice and copy/paste, but no one really cared. The sizzle sold the steak. Then as time went on more meat was added.

Jump to 2011 and this market already has very entrenched players with all basic features completely implemented for at least a year now. New entrants can no longer afford to delay and half-ass features that Android and iOS have already implemented and upgraded. It takes a helluva lot more to achieve a breakthrough these days. WP7 will be facing off against Android and MS is already playing catch-up.

The only reason why I use it is that .mac email address. I've had it since apple provided this as iTools and was free. If they force me to go to .me or icloud (or what ever) I'm pretty sure I'll not spend the c-note when it comes time to renew.

I avoid iDisk because its pathetically slow and is not cross platform. Drop box is better faster and more intuitive (and free).

Yup iDisk could be faster. I know they're different services but Evernote syncs in the blink of an eye. Why not MobileMe? Maybe there are technical barriers I'm not aware of.

I'm guessing MobileMe will be merged into whatever cloud service Apple will implement. We might even see iTunes get rolled into it. Somehow.

One can only hope. Unless the service is dramatically improved I will not be renewing.

Impressive write up, and with Nokia soon to be rolling out WP7 phones, MS may finally have all the pieces put together. If MS continues to falter on the mobile platform, I think it will cost Ballmer's job. Too much is at stake and so far the results have been less then stellar.

A big problem for Microsoft is the fact cellphone carriers won't allow software updates of the cellphone OS. This isn't like Apple, where Apple bludgeoned both AT&T and Verizon into requiring that Apple controls the upgrade process. This is why iOS has been so quickly updated, and starting with iOS 5.0, the updates will happen even faster since if you can get to any Wi-Fi "hotspot" the updates will be done without connecting to a Mac or Windows PC running iTunes.

One thing that should help in that regard is that there is a minimum spec requirement for devices and the fact that there aren't lots of different handsets to choose from.

Perhaps, and given the fact that MS' first update a while back was bricking some phones only exacerbates the problem.

I do not think the carriers have a choice in the matter because the rsdio dtack is not xhanged with tge update. Add in the fact that it is insanely easy to turn a WP7 phone into a dev phone which allows installing non approved apps. All it takes is a passport id (free to get from ms) and then the sdk which is also free free from ms then it will let you turn like 3 to 4 phones into dev phones.

My girlfriend has a samsung focus that I play around with sometimes and literally every problem I have with WP7 will be fixed with Mango, with the lone exception of no dedicated back button for the browser.

Imagining WP7 with mango....I kinda like it more then iOS now. It's a beautiful OS. But it could just be the novelty of it and I think I might just be getting bored with iOS.

I'm also totally blown away by Nokia's N9 design. If they put Mango on that, or something as cool looking as that, as much as I love iOS and Apple hardware....I'm switching. But then again, we haven't seen the next iPhone.

umm the browser does have a dedicated back button. It is on the 3 buttons on the bottom of the phone. all WP7 are required to have those 3 buttons no matter what the design. The dedicated button is there.

No I mean a back button that is dedicated to the browser. The problem with how it works now is that if you exit the browser and use other apps then go back into the browser, the back button no longer takes you back in your browser history but acts just like it does with all other apps and moves you back through your used apps.

Its been popping up all over. TBH I think Nokia planned the leak, but whatever. It looks like a nice, solid phone. Im curious about the enhancements they will deliver over other WP manufacturers.

Well, if apple agree to my suggestion of giving ios 5 a aero peek like feature for multitasking ios could still be better
