The other day my father and I were walking through town and stepped into a liquor store to check out the beers. To our surprise they had Westvleteren 12, a Belgian Trappist beer which often comes first in tastings but is difficult to get hold of.

So we chatted to the proprietors, who told us that Westvleteren was now being made available through standard wholesale channels. It used to be that you had to go to the Abbey in Belgium and you could buy only two crates, and if you could get it at all in the shops it would cost 15 euros per bottle.

But the proprietor of the shop now said, he could get 5 cases from his wholesaler and he was putting them for sale for 5 euros per bottle. Still a special treat and rather expensive for regular drinking, but nice to be able to get it for special occasions.

A lot of midsized breweries in the US are struggling right now: if you're too small to earn widespread retail distribution, but too big to subsist on direct sales at the taproom, you're in an untenable spot in the marketplace.

Here the more upmarket supermarket chains have a program called “regional favourites” where they carry local beers, pastries and cheeses, competing with the specialist shops. They seem to sell reasonably well.

Wow.

That I didn't know.

What a treat is in store for you.

A nice selection of wine, mostly from Bourgogne, expensive but so delicious:

Order to be received on Tuesday, I can’t wait.

A nice drawing to explain the difference between Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and Villages (others):

A German beer has been opened: Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier, perfect summer sipping, served in a Belgian beer glass (St Bernardus, for the record).

A bowl of crisps is alongside my beer.

Sadly my order of fine wine didn’t arrive, the carrier is accumulating late parcels, lots of customer complaints.

So while I’ll get a refund, instead I got a Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain from Château de Meursault from 2019 (only 580 bottle produced) and it’s for apéro with Comté abd some other nice cheese.

Sigh.

Commiserations.

However, I would imagine that this incredible parcel - package - of wine shall arrive in due course, and that you will be able to fully savour it then.

What an excellent idea to treat yourself instead, and do enjoy your Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru - sounds absolutely delicious - I must say that I love those wines.

Purchased beer (Trappistes Rochefort, Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel, Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier, Erdinger Dunkel), which will be delivered in due course.

Also bought a few bottles of wine from Alsace.

I do love a good Alsatian white. Give me that bone dry, minerally goodness.

I've been enjoying a 4 pack of Three's Brewing Vliet Pilsner. They were my friendly neighborhood brewpub back when I still lived in Brooklyn — they do good work.

I realized I have enough Pimm's No. 1 left to make a Pimm's Cup. It's a hot day here, so that will surely hit the spot when cocktail hour rolls around.

Likewise.

Actually, I had been hoping to lay hands on a good Riesling, - however, inexplicably, they were out of Riesling - but I did treat myself to a bottle of their Gewürztraminer and a bottle of their Pinot Gris (whch is far harder to find than is Pinot Blanc, which they also had).

A bottle that comprised a blend of Chardonnay and Viognier - I like wines from both grapes - from the Pays d'Oc - recommended by the proprietor - also found its way into my (French, hand-made) basket.

Something about Pimm's just says "summer".
