Here are a couple of screenshots of the heart zones strip at the bottom and one using the "two small metrics" option, which has always been in the app but which I have improved in the new version. The small metrics are probably too small to be seen when you are moving fast but could be useful for hiking and other slower activities.

There are also options for a pace zones strip or a power zones strip at the bottom, and also an auto-zones option where it uses the profile of the screen to decide which strip to show. So it would show the pace zones for Pace, Speed or Target profiles and power zones for the Power or Stryd profiles. Otherwise it shows the heart zones strip.

This version is currently being reviewed by Apple, so fingers crossed.

Is the zone strip specific to Watch Series 8? I have a series 7 running os9 (iPhone 16 Pro). I selected the zone strip in settings but it doesn’t show up on my watch screens during a walking workout. Tried rebooting both watch and phone.

It should work on all watches with curved corners, so the series 4 onwards.

Someone else mentioned it getting stuck showing the same screen message, but I haven't heard of it not working. It may be worth changing it in the settings in the watch app in case the communication from the iPhone is not working. To do that go to the More screen and then tap Bottom Line.

There isn't a way to copy the screen metrics to the voice metrics. No-one has ever asked for that. I will bear it in mind if more people request it.

Again no-one has ever asked for a target pace associated with a whole workout. You can set up a target pace for each interval and a generic target pace, but not a pace for a schedule. I am not sure what you mean about the map: do you mean the source, the colour scheme, or maybe a route?

I plan to allow interval schedules to be imported and exported so I may revisit the interval types, but again I can't remember anyone ever asking for more types.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry that none of the changes are in my short term plans.
About Voice Metrics/Alerts:

That is the one part of the app I still don’t fully understand as you can configure in so many places and I’m not sure what I’m doing (Schedule/voice metric vs settings alerts). After the first run I had no voice announcements at all and I thought it was some misconfiguration from my side. But turned out the watch just needed a restart to fix this…

About Map and Workout Target Pace:

I think I didn’t express myself very well.
I was not asking for a new metric.

What I was thinking about was, that it would be nice if you could control/define the global target pace (settings/Pace&Distance/Target Pace) and route (settings/route) in the Interval Schedules.
So that you could define everything that belongs to one Interval Schedule from one place (Intervals, route, global target pace).

What I currently have to do before I start every workout is:
  1. Go to: Settings/Pace-Distance/Taget Pace (set the target pace for the workout
  2. Go to: Settings/Route (select route for the workout
  3. Start workout: Selecting the "Interval Schedule" to do.

I would love to skip steps 1+2 and just start the workout selecting a "interval schedule". The schedule should already know about the route and target pace. And yes I think to have the global target pace metric in addition to the Interval Target pace is useful :)

Perhaps I’m strange and most people using the app usually go for a run without changing/defining a route or the target pace every time or have no daily changing predefined "interval schedules"?

Another possibility is that you don't have the latest watch app. Apple often do not update the watch app when you update the iPhone app, which is very annoying. Please check that you have v4.7.0 (or v4.6.5) on the watch. To do this go to the Settings on the watch app and tap More and then scroll down to the bottom.

If you haven't got the latest version then do not uninstall and reinstall the watch app, because that will lose the data, but instead go to the App Store on the watch and install from there.

Restarting is often the best fix for any problem. The app uses watchOS Siri for voice alerts and that does seem to get confused sometimes.

As I say, no-one has ever asked for a target pace and a route to be associated with an interval schedule, but it sounds useful for some people so I will bear it in mind for the future.

Is anyone seeing a completely purple screen when looking at a past workout or route on the iPhone app with the latest version of the app? I released it a few hours ago, but on a very limited schedule and someone has already reported this. I looked at my version and I am seeing the same on iOS 16 but not on iOS 15.

This version has been tested by almost 200 people for a week or so, including many on the beta of iOS 16. It has also barely changed from previous versions which have been tested for many weeks, so I suspect it may something in the release version of iOS 16. Can anyone else see the purple screen?

Yes, I have the exact same problem. All of my past workouts have the purple screen.

I have a question, I like to go running trail but I’m not running all the time, what sport should I select? Running or hiking?

I love a feature of the Apple’s stock workout app which is the multiple workouts in a session, for example I start a walking workout and without having to end it, I can start a running workout and in the end the Watch shows me all the calories burned and all the time spent doing it. Are you planning to add something like this? Thanks.

It's difficult to know what activity type to choose for run/walks. The reason I don't like to suggest either is because I worry that it may affect the watchOS calibration if you tell the watch that you are walking when you are running, or vice-versa. I don't know for sure if this would be an issue but it could be.

So maybe use Other Outdoor if you do not want any of the steps metrics, but if you do then pick running and maybe use GPS distances instead of Apple's calibrated distances, in case the calibration is off.

Multi-activity workouts have been on my to-do list from the beginning, but surprisingly never rose to the top of the list. Maybe they will be more requested now that watchOS 9 includes better support for them.

I'm on 4.7.0 and can't figure out how to add the extra bottom stat.

Go to the Settings tab in the iPhone app and tap Screen Bottom Line, or go to the watch app Settings and tap More and then Bottom Line.

As of this morning it's working, although I didn't do anything to change it. Maybe the watch app updated overnight or something. Anyway it's all good.

Also updated the phone app to your new release this morning, and all of the maps on the phone look great now.

Glad that things are working now and that the emergency fix also worked. The watch app is sometimes updated at the same time as the iOS app and sometimes it isn't.

I haven't worked out why but my guess is that iOS and watchOS both do automatic updates but not necessarily at the same time. Whatever the reason it is very annoying that the end result is different versions of the app on each device!

Hello,

Your app is fundamentally the only reason the Apple watch has a chance to compete with the Garmin line. Without it, I wouldn't even own an Apple Watch. I hope you continue to support this app for years to come or have a long term strategy to keep this app going forever haha. I am really interested in having the 49mm screen size update right away. Have you come to a decision yet if this will go out as a beta update or a public update soon? If you decide the beta route, I would love to become a beta tester because I have an Apple Watch Ultra coming next Friday that I would want to test the app out on day one out of the box. Whats usually the process to join the beta? Thanks.
Also interested in beta testing. Ping @cfc

Thanks but there isn’t a beta at the moment. The current version on the App Store should hopefully make the most of the 49mm screen on the Ultra because it does on Apple’s simulator. However we won’t know for sure until the real Ultras are available.

I am starting on a new beta that will allow use of the Action Button (if Apple ever tell us how to use it). From what I can tell so far it is only available via a mechanism which is very powerful but unnecessarily complex if an app just wants to detect a button being pressed. It is also only available for their newish coding language called Swift, whereas WOD is written in an older language (Objective C). I am hoping that won’t be as much of a problem as the requirement to use SwiftUI (which is even newer) for the always on display.

So this new beta may take a while to build, but if you want to test it when it is available then please let me know at info@workoutdoors.net.

I usually start the "Other Outdoor" in such cases. Between different types, when I rest, I put the activity on Pause.

I'm one of beta testers and I had weird problem yesterday with this app. I couldn't stop/exit with a long press of the screen or change screen with left/right swipe. I could click distance/beat and so on and they get bigger and then back but long press screen didn't do anything. It has only happened once and not after that one time so I can't say that it's a problem with the app or maybe it was something with the watch but just for FYI

My guess is this was caused by a wet screen. After runs I’ve had this happen because a drop of sweat running down the screen will interrupt the long press. I typically pause my run with the Crown/Side Button press and then wait until I’ve cooled off and can wipe the screen dry before I do the long hold to end/save the run. This has no negative impact on any of the metrics. I live in Florida and this time of the year is the worst for touch screens.

Wow, what a bummer they aren’t allowing devs to access something as simple as a button press via Objective C. I guess they are desperately looking to depreciate Objective C. Knowing Apple they will want devs to have some elaborate button action configuration experience that has a touch of just the right #orange hex to elegantly highlight the orange button. Apple is exhausting sometimes. It’s not just a “button”. It’s an Apple Action Button. Hahaha

As @noel18 says this could be due to a wet screen. If it happens repeatedly then try rebooting the watch as that often fixes strange problems.

They have introduced a great new framework called AppIntents that integrates with Siri and Shortcuts to allow users to do lots of useful things, but as far as I can tell that framework (which only works with Swift) seems to be the only way for an app to know when the action button is pressed.

I could be wrong and there is a simple way for apps to detect it, but I can't see anything in the very limited documentation on how to do that. I wouldn't mind if the framework supported Objective C because I would then integrate it and could offer lots of nice new features like Siri control of the app. That may even be possible in a roundabout way but without any documentation it is hard to know.

It's the usual frustration that developers have at this time of year. Apple announce a load of stuff in June that will appear in the software in September. But any software changes that would give away a hardware feature they understandably keep under wraps. So we get a couple of weeks between when the hardware is announced and it is released to get it coded up (or we get lots of annoyed users writing bad reviews of our apps for not supporting the latest stuff).

I wouldn't mind because, as I say it is understandable that they want to keep the features secret, but it is very annoying that they don't even have the documentation ready for us to use in those 2 weeks. In June we get lots of great videos explaining how to use stuff, but in September, when we really need the help due to the time constraints they impose on us, we get almost nothing.

Sorry for the rant!

I'd like to request a data field that shows the time remaining (in hours and minutes) until sunset or sunrise.

“Sunrise in 2h:34m”. Then after sunrise it switches to “Sunset in 10h:23h”.

Bonus points if it can be configured to show time until dusk and dawn.

Thank you

I am planning to buy this but trying to decide if I need to wait. I am receiving the Ultra on the 23rd (I am currently a S6 user). I am wondering if I should wait to buy this because; (1) a newer release is coming to support the 49mm Ultra screen; or (2) will the upgrade that supports Ultra be free or require a different purchase?
