I'd like to request a data field that shows the time remaining (in hours and minutes) until sunset or sunrise.

“Sunrise in 2h:34m”. Then after sunrise it switches to “Sunset in 10h:23h”.

Bonus points if it can be configured to show time until dusk and dawn.

Thank you
The app already has separate fields for "Time to Sunset" and "Time to Sunrise" as well as "Sunset Time" and "Sunrise Time"

You are the first person to suggest one field that does both, but it makes sense. It won't be high on my priority list though.

I am planning to buy this but trying to decide if I need to wait. I am receiving the Ultra on the 23rd (I am currently a S6 user). I am wondering if I should wait to buy this because; (1) a newer release is coming to support the 49mm Ultra screen; or (2) will the upgrade that supports Ultra be free or require a different purchase?
The app never requires new purchases. You buy it once for a single fee and then never pay again. All future updates are included.

The current version on the App Store should support the 49mm screen on the Ultra but I can't be sure. It works on Apple's simulator but I can't guarantee it will work on the real device until I try it on one. If it doesn't work then I will fix it in the upcoming version that will hopefully handle the action button.

Thanks but there isn’t a beta at the moment. The current version on the App Store should hopefully make the most of the 49mm screen on the Ultra because it does on Apple’s simulator. However we won’t know for sure until the real Ultras are available.

I am starting on a new beta that will allow use of the Action Button (if Apple ever tell us how to use it). From what I can tell so far it is only available via a mechanism which is very powerful but unnecessarily complex if an app just wants to detect a button being pressed. It is also only available for their newish coding language called Swift, whereas WOD is written in an older language (Objective C). I am hoping that won’t be as much of a problem as the requirement to use SwiftUI (which is even newer) for the always on display.

So this new beta may take a while to build, but if you want to test it when it is available then please let me know at info@workoutdoors.net.
Do you plan to update the app for always on display?

The Always on Display won't be in the app for a while because it will be a lot of work. Sorry about that. Updating the screen when inactive requires Apple's latest coding language (known as SwiftUI). This appeared long after WorkOutDoors was first released, so the app does not use it.

However it is top of my list of features to add so I plan to rewrite the app to use SwiftUI. It will take many months though, probably as a background task.

Is there a data field for GAP= Gradiant Adjusted Pace? I did not find one. It is an essential field for me when trailrunning for pacing my effort.

No there isn't. Sorry about that. It is very rarely requested (maybe once a year, if that) and there isn't a "right" way to calculate it, so each system calculates it differently.

I try to avoid subjective metrics like that because I get lots of complaints when metrics don't match those generated by other systems which use different algorithms (for example: ascent/descent). However I may add it in the future if enough people request it and I can find an algorithm that gives results that people find useful.

Thanks for the fast response. As a past Garmin user I found this data very reliable and paced several competitions on GAP when trail running.

As I just found out, Apple running power could compensate that feature. But I cannot see it on my Apple Watch 4. Do I need a newer Apple Watch?

Out of interest, does Garmin show GAP live, not only as part of analytics afterwards? Strava only shows it at the end.

Long term user of this wonderful app. For the first time in years, I’m (perhaps wrongly) setting up my new iPhone from scratch and using iCloud where required. My WorkOutDoors app on my old phone has all my workouts listed in the “workouts” tab going back years. Is there a way to move all of these over to my new iPhone?

Running Power is part of watchOS 9 which just came out last week and if you want this metric in WOD you have to make sure you are on the latest version which came out week. Have you updated your watch to watchOS 9? That would be the first step.

Incase anyone else is looking for the new bottom zone bar. In the WorkOutDoors app on the phone go into Settings and then scroll down to "Screen Bottom Line". I was looking in the Screens tab for this option at first. This will be nice to see the color change at a glance when your trying to stay in zone 2 on an easy day.

I have heard that it requires a series 6 or newer, but can't find anywhere on Apple's website that confirms this.

Sorry you are having problems. If you don't restore from a backup then you can copy the data from the old phone to a computer and then from there to the new iPhone by using Apple's File Sharing mechanism:

I’ve haven’t tried to find running power in WOD yet but the screen is definitely not available in Apple’s workout app on my Series 5 😕

I can't reproduce that. Just to confirm: this is when you tap the Screen Bottom Line option on the Settings tab in the iPhone app?

What activity is selected when you go to the Alerts settings (because the same activity will be selected for the Screen Bottom Line settings)?

Also please could you send the crash log to info@workoutdoors.net. To do that go to Apple's Settings app and tap "Privacy" and then "Analytics & Improvements" and then "Analytics Data". Then send me any logs which are called "WatchMap". Thanks.

In the meantime you should be able to configure it using the watch Settings. To do this go to "More" and then "Bottom Line".

The Ultra reviews are coming in. Looks promising. This nugget from the WSJ struck me:

However, finding my way forward is always more of a challenge, and Garmin won here.

Before heading out on the hike, I downloaded the planned route to the Garmin watches. When we hit an intersection, instead of pulling out a phone to check our position, I consulted the Epix on Will’s wrist. A purple line on the map told us to go right, while a blue arrow showed which direction we were facing.

The Apple Watch doesn’t have a native mapping experience. After the trip, I researched apps that work with it, and Wikiloc has potential. You can import map files and download them for offline use. Its Apple Watch app has a great map view, though it doesn’t provide turn-by-turn directions.

On the Apple Watch, apps can fill in for missing features, but you have to hunt.

I know TbT nav is going to WOD, and it's going to almost single-handedly fix the biggest glaring issue with the Ultra. Can't wait.

Thanks for such a great app. Two questions/feature requests.
1) Is there a way to manually mark intervals/skip to the next part of an interval? In particular, when doing intervals on the track, the GPS isn't entirely accurate and the intervals don't line up with the track so it'd be nice to be able to mark the beginning and end of an interval for the app to smooth/correct the distances (either with the new action button on the ultra whenever that's supported or on the screen).
2) Same concept but on fixed distance/race mode, can we mark mile markers on the course to calibrate the time predictors fields?

Also, I know there's no beta right now, but if there's a signup list for that, I'd love to test out any new features in the future.

You can manually split a workout into intervals by using the "New Interval" command, which also allows you to move to the next interval when using an interval schedule. To do this touch the watch screen for a second and tap Settings and then Commands. When you are running a workout then you will see a button for New Interval.

In the scenario you describe it is best to set up a shortcut for the New Interval command. To do this go to the Commands settings again and press Shortcuts. Then choose a shortcut (e.g. a swipe, a double tap, pressing both side buttons, or a touch menu option), and set that to the New Interval command.

The ability to calibrate the distance using mile markers is on my to-do list and has been rising recently due to being requested more often than in the past.

I hope that helps. Glad you like the app!

@cfc asking for a friend who b/c of my enthusiasm about power & Stryd now likes to use power metrics in his run - but does not have a Stryd: should he be able to do so now WatchOS 9 is here, with the latest version (4.7.0) of WOD on his watch?

My friend studied the settings part of WOD, and does not see a way to show power on a WOD screen. The blue POWER field indicates "(Requires power sensor)" and the metric itself stays empty when he runs.

What model of watch does he have? From what I have heard the power zones are only available on the series 6 and later. However Apple do not say this in any of their official documentation that I can see. They do mention that the other running metrics require the S6+ so it seems likely that power is similarly restricted.

I was hoping that the limitation was only in the betas but it seems to still be there from what I have seen and heard. It could be that they are not specific because they are still trying to get it working on earlier models, but that is probably unlikely.

It works from the app on the watch, when I try on the phone it crashes every time.
Under Alerts, the Running Alerts shows.
I was unable to find a log called WatchMap, so I sent the latest log called WorkOutDoors.

@cfc For Watch OS 9 which Metric is the current power metric in WOD? The one I see "Power - Current power in Watts " says it requires a sensor where a couple other power metrics say "watch OS 9."
