A generic UI wish: every time you do something in a menu and return to the previous level, you find yourself at the top of that menu. It would be helpful and intuitive if WOD would remember your previous' menu position. This would be beneficial when updating interval schedules and also in various longer settings menus
+1 on this point!

Thanks for being a long-term user of the app. If you choose not to restore from a full backup of the old phone then you can use Apple's File Sharing to copy the data from the old phone to a computer and then to copy it from there to the new phone:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201301 (Windows)
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210598 (MacOS)

I hadn't realised that about the scroll positions but now that you mention it they could be improved. I will bear it in mind.

The next version of the app will allow you to sort routes by latest (and nearest) as well as alphabetical. So I will probably do the same for schedules when I next look at that area of the code.

Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks Ian! I always transfer my old iPhone to the new one using the standard way that Apple provides (with the glowing globe on one iPhone that you have to properly position in the camera of the other) but despite doing so, I still have ended up in the last years with a WOD where all my settings are wiped. Hence the wish to have backups done automatically, so that in such cases, I can always quickly go back to last week, or to the last time I changed settings in WOD.

Super you'll take the other 2 topics into consideration!

The settings on the watch will always be lost when you upgrade either the watch or the iPhone. Unfortunately watchOS does not preserve them. So you need to Send Yesterday's Settings etc.

In the future I may try to automatically restore the settings, or offer to send them all. It's one of those "tidying up" features that is on my to-do list. I know that the procedure when changing hardware could definitely be improved.

@cfc - have noticed something strange lately. Normally use a Polar HR sensor and a Stryd footpad, and has worked for months.
Yesterday the Stryd wouldn't connect to WOD when starting a run - thought it was the battery. Charged it. Didn't work again this morning.

I can see under Sensors in WOD it finds it, but when starting a run it forever "Searching...". Have reset the watch and Stryd to no avail. Any ideas?

A couple of people have mentioned issues with Stryd recently. Have you maybe updated the firmware on the footpod? Someone mentioned that they did that and the footpod then reported a name with a unique identifier instead of just "Stryd". This is good but it may mean that existing pairings no longer work.

So try unpairing the Stryd from the app and then re-pairing it.

Unfortunately no luck. I did update the firmware recently, though I feel like it has worked a few times since then.
When re-pairing it keeps the name Stryd rather than giving a new name.
Bit odd. Not a huge deal as I don't love the footpod...

It's worth making sure that the footpod is not connected to anything else, including Stryd's watch and iPhone apps and the WOD iPhone app.

A favor please Ian.

Just so I’m clear (since I’m hoping for watch 10 under my Christmas Tree).

If I get a new watch but keep my existing phone ... what exactly should I do to restore my settings to the new watch ?

And if I know I am replacing my phone do I export/import ?

It would be ideal to have iCloud support here. Not only would configurations be restored but I could also view my run statistics on my iPad.

Just a suggestion ...

I will add iCloud support at some time but it isn't as commonly requested as I expected. One day though.

When changing the phone then either restore from a full backup (which saves all the app data) or use Apple's File Sharing mechanism to copy the data from the old phone to a computer and then from there to the new computer.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201301 (Windows)
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210598 (MacOS)

WatchOS does not preserve watch app data so you will then need to send the data from the iPhone app to the watch app. This can be done by going to the Settings tab and tapping File Management and then "Send Yesterday’s Watch Settings", "Send Screens to Watch” and “Send Interval Schedules to Watch”. If you want then you can also send routes or workouts individually. They can’t all be sent at once because they are too large.

Have you tried rebooting both devices? And made sure that Bluetooth and/or WiFi are enabled for both of them?

If that doesn't explain it then there are generally two possible reasons for the workout not being saved to Apple's Health system. The first is if you run another workout app at the same time as WorkOutDoors. WatchOS only allows one workout session to be running at any one time, so if you start a session in another app then the workout session in WorkOutDoors will be killed off.

If that doesn’t explain it then please check that you have given the app permission to read and write all the health data. To check this go to the Settings app on the iPhone and select Privacy / Health / WorkOutDoors. Make sure that every health setting is enabled (you may need to scroll down to turn them all on). Note that if you have installed on a new iPhone or watch then you may need to give permission again.

If they are all enabled then you may be experiencing a rare bug with iOS/watchOS where the watch seems to lose the permission. To fix this switch all of the health permissions off, then reboot both the iPhone and the watch, and then switch them all on again. This procedure nudges iOS into sending them to the watch again.

That should hopefully fix it for future workouts.
Turns out in the 15P -> 16P migration, WoD had completely reset. Settings of the phone, watch and Health permissions. Re-enabling health permissions resolved the sync problem.

Hi, I searched but couldn't find anything. On my run yesterday, I noticed that the Workoutdoors screen is behaving strangely. When I raise it, I can see that some of the metrics are not displayed, just a blank space, and then they appear after a second. And similarly, I have the HR zone in a strip at the bottom and it suddenly goes to the top and then back down again.

I'm on WatchOS 11. I did recently change some settings so the new Smart Stack has its Live Activities disabled. And I also switched off a setting about syncing photos. All done to preserve battery life. Could this be affecting the screen or is there something else?

Thanks also for a wonderful app!

That is very strange! Someone else mentioned something similar a while back. I think it is some sort of glitch in the way watchOS positions information on the screen because I don't think the app could swap around parts of the screen like that.

Have you tried rebooting the watch? That is the best thing to try for strange problems.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, very odd. I have rebooted the watch, and will see tomorrow morning on my next run if that has solved the issue.

i have 2 questions, when using WOD is there any option only for specific apps to enable always on?
Is there any hope to support pool swimming?

The always on setting is configurable on a per-activity basis. Note that third party apps can't control the always on display. So this setting offers a way to show a black screen if always on is enabled in watchOS but it can't show metrics if it is not enabled. It is mainly to save the battery because non-black pixels use more power (as does updating the metrics).

The app does support pool swimming. Although it's admittedly only for completeness, and there are dedicated swimming apps out there that are better.

its my 2nd day with the apple watch (maybe a noob question) ,
The always on setting is configurable on a per-activity basis , this is at your app or on apple workout app?

at your app with pool swimming can i edit the data i can see? is there any drill option?
do you recommend any better swimmin app?

WorkOutDoors allows you to control the always on display on a per-activity basis as long as it is enabled in watchOS.

The app allows you to edit the data that is shown, but does not detect drills. I haven't used other swimming apps so can't recommend one. Sorry about that.

I'm often exporting .GPX files and have an issue with file names.

The issue is that exported file names do not include the date or time.
I have multiple files exported that received the same name.
The names are generic and overlap over multiple weeks, here are some examples:
- Sunday Morning Cycle.gpx
- Sunday Afternoon Cycle.gpx

If in future date or time would be included, overlapping could be completely prevented.
For example:
- 20241019 Sunday Morning Cycle.gpx

Would it be possible to add the date per default in file names or as an seperate option in "Settings -> Export Options"?

Allowing some sort of workout name configuration is on my to-do list. It is only requested every month or two, so isn't high on the list at the moment. Sorry about that, but I will probably get around to it eventually.

There is no official place for that. I just keep an informal tally.
These are the users (including FMUK) who were also hoping for iCloud backup.

Since last week, there were 8 users (including me) voting for it.

We hope you can bump it up your list, please. Thanks Ian :).

Maybe this is more of generic "how does the Watch work with maintaining which app has the focus during a Workout" question than specifically related to WoD...but...

I use the native Workout app to track my activities (with Watchletic used to drag structured workouts from my intervals.icu calendar automatically into the native app - with about 75% of my runs structured in some way its just an easy habit to use it for ALL runs)...and I use WoD mainly in Map Only mode (I occasionally use it 'properly').

This works really well as can just double-tap the digital crown to switch between the two apps. But what I find, when its a run where I mainly want to concentrate on the map, at first, every time I raise my wrist (I don't use AOD), the native Workout app appears, and I have to double tap to WOD to see the map...then after I've done this toggle a few times, things seem to change and when I raise my wrist, the map appears, as I'd prefer.

If I then have a spell where I want to concentrate on the metrics, it seems to take me a little while to make the native app retain the focus after a wrist raise again.

Do we know what the specific "rules" are that determine which app gets the focus when the wrist is raised whilst in a Workout and with a Map open on WOD? I feel like there's a simpler way to lock on each app that what I currently do, which is get frustrated for a bit and then suddenly its "ok" ?!

Generally the app that is running a workout is given priority by watchOS. Although how that works may have changed recently. I am in the middle of a conversation on reddit about running two workout apps at once and someone on there said that it doesn't work as well for them as it did in the past, so maybe Apple have changed something.

To be honest it's out of my control so is not something that I have investigated in any detail.
