LOL!!!

Sure, if you buy last years phone. A Fully loaded max with apple care and tax is just shy of $2000

your average college student isn't buying a $999 Xs
Your average professional isn’t buying an XS where I’m from either. It’s mostly older iPhones. I bought an iPhone 8 too despite it having no indication to my level of wealth.

They have launched 3 year contracts this year though so carriers are attempting to make the iPhone XS more affordable. I would expect to see more about than I saw of the X last year.

It doesn’t help having ‘Unbox Therapy’ as the thumbnail of this thread lol. That guy is a total tool and shouts and overdramatises anti Apple diatribe. I am reading a lot of complaints about quality of this device though through the mass media. Not sure how the screens can be so inconsistent since it’s a second generation device?

Where do you see that? I intentionally didn't mention UT in the OP as the guy is indeed a charlatan who simply jumped on the bandwagon.

There have been no complaint threads or posts about the iPhone 8 line?

Oh there were, I myself went through a couple of 8’s and an 8 plus, trying to get a uniform screen that wasn’t yellower at the top or bottom. I gave up in the end and went back to my 6s to see what apple released this year.

I’m nervous that the XR will have the same issues

It’s usually every single year that something arises where the iPhone is having some type of software own hardware issue after launch, but I think for the majority of people who do notice this, it’s on a tech forum, and in most instances, we don’t know how it actually affects everybody else compared to how many devices sold. But I think those that understand Apple’s methodology of how they handle concerns, know that they will rectify the issue one way or the other.

I can tell you have never owned a Mercedes or BMW!!!

I was thinking the same thing lol. The Honda I own now is in no way inferior in quality than the 5 Series I used to own. Then again BMW’s are a similar price to Hondas in Europe whereas they carry quite a big premium in the US so they are perceived as a more luxury marque.

This isn't about cars... it's about Apple's (recent) "ship it now fix it later" attitude. I hate it when people say "If Steve jobs were still alive" but Apple thrived under Steve by developing a reputation for selling quality products that justified the higher cost. Were mistakes made under Steve? Sure. Were mistakes made as a direct result of Steve's interference? Yup. But by and large a sold product was delivered with the occasional flub (antenna gate.) Steve is gone and the details no longer mater.

The Xs just has too many of these flubs for one generation
  • Camera Issues
  • Antenna Issues (WiFi & LTE)
  • Charging Issues
  • Video stuttering / playback issues
  • OS Issues
This is ignoring any industry standard failure rates. A lemon will always sneak throng Quality control. What is being discussed here are issues by design or just plan complacency & not caring about delivering a quality product.

I'm not trying to be critical of Apple here. I just expect better. I'm not just some Johnny-come-lately... I have Used Apple products for decades... And I hope Apple will continue to deliver products that will encourage me to remain a loyal Apple user.

Your point? Do I have to own something to criticise it? As a technology nerd I take an active interest in many products that I don't always own. You just can't take any criticism aimed towards Apple, would it make you feel better if I told you about all the stuff Samsung does wrong as well? there was a lot to hate about their phones before the S8 and thats why I was using other phones before then. As another example I own a 2011 MBA, its the best laptop I've ever owned, but i'm not buying the rubbish Apple is selling at the moment to replace it till they fix some of my concerns. Im sorry i'm to unbiased for your liking.

My point is that is where a large part of these “widespread” issue discussions come from. People that haven’t experienced the issues themselves and instead just taking secondhand knowledge and spread it around as some sort of truth. No doubt there are manufacturing issues, there always are, but that discussion should come from those with the device in question.

I will say that I'm finding myself less "forgiving" of these issues the higher the price apple charges. If Apple wants to market its products as premium and prices them accordingly, then they need to roll out a premium experience.
The listed issues are not called for when dealing with a premium product and its disappointing

I don't need to own it there are plenty of people that do own the device that are having various issues along with various tech reviewers on youtube talking about the problems. You also don't get 40+ page threads on macroumors if there is no issue, where there is smoke there is almost always fire. This is a 1000k phone that fails to do the essential things a phone should do, its in no way acceptable. If this was an Android manufacturer Apple users would be getting stuck in.

Personally I think this is all about perception. Social media wasn’t anything like the instant snowballing feedback mechanism it is now when Steve Jobs was alive. Nor was there such a rampant tendency for media outlets to overblow everything to create click bait headlines.

My XS is my sixth iPhone. All were bought at launch and all have been flawless. It is absolutely inevitable that any mass produced product will have some level of production issues affecting a small number of devices. It is inevitable that any software will have bugs. The measure is how the vendor addresses this.

Oh look, a newly released device having issues at launch...

No that’s not the point is it.

The point is, this is a new model phone based on last years phone which had none of these issues.
And it’s also the MOST EXPENSIVE MOBILE PHONE ON THE MASS MARKET!

It’s like buying a brand new BMW M5 for 120 grand and then people accepting and apologising it has multiple issues.... which stop it from actually working as a car!

This could be a few devices from the first production run, but when it’s on a phone costing this much it’s NOT excusable and people have a right to complain.

Even MORE so when the companies who’s brand name is behind the device is valued as the richest company in the planet!

I haven't noticed any of these issues on my Xs thus far. I really think people go out of their way to find issues to complain about.

Edit: Im sure this will get me labeled as a fanboy/Apple-apologist, oh well.

No, it gets labelled as the good ol..

I don’t have any issues with MY phone therefore those who complain must be going out of their way to complain about nothing..

Exactly.. I swear blind! Some people in this site would actively and aggressively defend Apple if they sold a cardboard box for a grand!
It’s getting ridiculous, when they have all that money, they MUST offer a premium service that’s faultless if they charge as you say premium prices.

Yeah the XR is the one I have my eye in, thankfully it has the same antenna design as the X and 8 so hopefully that’ll work Ok. Not sure about the rest though...

You have every right to discuss it, it just doesn’t mean much considering you aren’t experiencing the issue. Of those 40 page threads, there’s a bunch of people will the issue, a bunch of people saying they aren’t experiencing the issue, and a majority of people without the phone just chiming in saying how this is completely unacceptable. Fair points, just overblown as usual. This sort of thing happens specifically with Apple every product release. They’ll roll out a 12.0.1 issue next week, problems will be resolved, people move on. The non vocal majority who never had a problem continues to be happy with their phone, the people who had issues are now happy, and the people like yourself will move on to the next discussion about another Apple “failure”. I guess I should just be used to it by now and not bother responding. I have a Max, no display issues, no antenna issues, no WiFi issues, no charging issues, so I guess what do I know.

Pictures don’t show it justice, especially when using an iPhone 5S to capture this, but True Tone is defective as well as the screen. Too harsh on the yellow, and without True Tone, the display is dimmer and the color temperature leans more towards yellow (hard to see).

That's exactly how my iPhone XS was compared to my wife's and my Pixel 2. The screen was a disgusting yellow compared to the others. I had sent it back.

The iPhone X had other issues at launch like green marks on screens or phones freezing in colder climates. While Apple positioned its phones as a more premium models, the car example isn't completely accurate. $120k brand BMWs aren't as ubiquitous and not everyone can afford them. People have much more means to get an iPhone and less means to get a BMW.

Plus, Apple has had issues with more expensive products before. Their MacBooks had the keyboard problems before and some other noteworthy ones too. Nothing is perfect. Luxury cars aren't exempt from recalls either.

Maybe I am more realistic and wouldn't be surprised if Apple products have problems at launch like any other consumer product.

Should I still purchase an XS Max. I had the chance to purchase a Gold XS Max 256 yesterday. But after reading the wi-fi-gate and charging-gate issues, I thought I'd wait, knowing I can get this specific model at any time. Ugh... Apple is so disappointing year after year. There's always some issue. How can a company just release these products without them going through some other strict quality control?

Sure, a software update is probably due tomorrow or sometime this week to help fix the charging issues. Wi-Fi issues, haven't noticed them because my internet is a low budget speed anyways. I still get my speed.

I just read this article about a terminated employee suing Apple the other night. He states Tim Cook's Apple is the polar opposite of Steve Jobs' Apple.

I'll link it below for people to read:

I agree, Apple needs to really work on its QC for launches. I am not expecting my phone handed to me like it were the Stanley Cup with white gloves, but it's disappointing that these types of software issues occur. At least my phone isn't experiencing these issues nor is it dealing with issues like freezing last year or having green lines on them.

Oh look, a newly released device having issues at launch...

If you bought a new GMC Sierra Denali or a BMW 540i and the engine blew with a 100 miles on the dash.... you would be frustrated too

Over $1,XXX is a lot of coin for a cell phone.... as a middle class consumer... who struggled with thought of paying for these phones from the get go.... Expectations of a bugless device were expected

But an engine blowing =/= not charging until a display is waken up on a smartphone. The Note 7's explosion is similar to the engine blowing.

I got a BOGO deal w/ my phone and I will be paying $650 out of pocket for my XS Max. I am working class and still expect Apple to provide premium service too. Believe me, I am disappointed these things occur. However, I am trying to let tings get ironed out and be patient because I don't want to replace my phone unless absolutely necessary.

There will never, ever be a piece of hardware or software released without bugs so I guess it’s back to carrier pigeons then. Oh, they get ill or lost. Damn it. Maybe try scratching a message on a slate and just throwing it in the direction of the person you want to reach?

Ok, that’s all a bit facetious but the truth is humans aren’t perfect, we don’t make perfect things and stuff goes wrong. Frustrating but not life or death (well, most of the time...).
