I'd say that this is exactly what my current screen looks like. The two I got from KRCS and then immediately returned were worse. This is all based on the photo. So, the question is whether the photo represents your screen.

It's funny because to my eyes, even in that photo, there is virtually no shift in tint from the top to bottom. The only really noticeable thing is a slight shift in brightness from the centre (brightest) to the edges, and pretty much every such screenshot I've seen looks the same.

Ultimately, if my work consisted of looking at a blank screen with grey bars on it all day, these imperfections would probably start to drive me crazy. But in regular use--i.e. with multiple windows open, and showing multiple colours--I don't see how anyone would notice this. I certainly can't see how it would result in any major screw-ups in colour-critical work--i.e. preparing photos for print, etc. Suffice to say, I've had to work on far worse displays...

(Just my perspective, of course.)

Edit: thanks for the Photoshop science, Quu! (I actually contemplated doing this myself. ;))

So your point is valid. It's not a severe shift, but I concede that it's there. The question is, is it a big enough deal for me to want to return it...? Could I really hope to do much better? This screen is already, objectively, miles better than the 17" I had before, and that computer was just as expensive.

I really prefer not to make a hobby of this "display mining" if I can help it, and yet, the 14-day return window makes it all so convenient...

For me at-least I noticed it as soon as I started the web browser which was the first thing I had on the screen that was white. And it was so noticeable.

Now for the first day I thought oh maybe the screen is just a little warmer and I'll get used to it, but I just couldn't because every time I looked up I saw pristine white and when I looked down I saw cat piss yellow and that jarring difference I cannot adjust to. If the whole thing was that yellow or white I could get used to it but I can't have both on screen at once it just annoys me too much.

I've never ever had a display in my entire life with this problem. And I've had A LOT. Like 20+ different displays across all my computers and portables. This is unacceptable and not normal.

Hmmm... I like the idea of having someone in the factory "hand-pick" a perfect display for me, but I'm not sure I have faith that the process will live up to your standards, pendragon. If I could be guaranteed that returning it would yield a better display, I'd probably do it. But I'm just rolling the dice every time...

My advice is if it doesn't bother you / you don't notice it in normal use then don't replace it. My opinion doesn't bare anything over your own with your own machine. If however it is bothering you then replace it for sure. I'm going to keep replacing mine until I get one that I find acceptable.

You can wait till monday, and I'll let you know whether my specially picked macbook pro is any better. LOL I am not holding my breath.

This one has also developed a bad creaking. So, if the new one is the same screen wise and doesn't creak, I may just keep it and get on with my life.

I'd love to know too as I've been told the same thing. In-fact I have an email from my Apple support person which says:

You should be receiving the RMA number via email within 24 hours. Because this is the second defective product you have received, the replacement and return is actually being handled by a specialist to ensure that this does not happen again.

I don't think they would just outright lie to us, so I'm going to take them at their word.

Okay, that's a crucial difference.

Ignoring the photo I posted--which we can agree is of limited value since even a slight shift in the shooting angle could skew the results a bit--when I have a browser open, regardless of the brightness setting, the shift in warmth is barely detectable, if at all. In all honesty. It's certainly not perceptible as a "yellow" colour. Any discrepancy I see between the white at the top of my display vs the bottom is corrected when I alter my viewing angle slightly.

Even now as I try to dwell on it, in a dark room, with my "OCD sensors set to 11", so to speak, I'm struggling to see the tint. I'm daring this display to annoy me... but try as I might, I think I would feel slightly insane phoning in for a replacement.

Still, I'll live with it for a few days and see if my impressions change.

I don't think Apple is lying to us per say. I just don't have much faith in the checkers. They may look at the screen for one second and say, "looks good enough", and then send it off. That's what I expect.

Fair enough! I'll await your report. By then I should know whether any of this even remotely matters to me in my day-to-day use. But chances are--and following my own advice--if I'm looking for something with a critical eye and struggling to see it, I should probably leave well enough alone. ;)

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm hoping I just get a good one this time. By the time this 3rd one arrives it will have been one month since my original order date (October 22nd).

Yeah, for some reason I have a hard time picturing a guy in a warehouse meticulously going over every square inch of 30 separate rMBP displays with a spectrometer in an effort to find "the right one"... but hey, my fingers are crossed for you, dragon! ;)

On the plus side, you just bought yourself a free month of Applecare! ;)

I know. Takes all the joy out of getting a new computer doesn't it?

Does yours creak at all Quu? Mine creaks like a mother f---cker! The screw under the left part of the mouse pad seems as if it's lose or something. I don't know. I don't think I have the proper tools for these screws...

It does take the joy out of it yes, this is actually the first Apple product I've ever had to return out of the I dunno 25-35 things I've purchased from them over the last decade. I really am shocked that even my replacement came faulty considering all the prior good luck I've had.

No creaking at all on either of the ones I received. Even lifting it with one hand from the side I heard no creaking.

Well, that's a good sign for me. My odds may not be sh--t.

Yes, the first batch of these new Haswell's I think was just faulty. Hopefully Apple has fixed it now. I mean it's got to be a first batch thing, because the odds would be crazy given the number of returns some people are going through on here. And I can't believe this is the new Apple.

What a sad state of affairs. Spend $2500+, and no matter the defect, as long as you got one of the rare good screens, accept all other faults and manufacturing defects.

Truly a joke.

:(

You have applecare for a reason. Take it in, they fix the problem done.

There is a long thread, which you posted in.

Read it.

Multiple replacements yield the same poor screens. If it were that easy, we wouldn't need your insight to help us out.

I have been following that thread as well. I am still talking about the creaking issue. If it LITERALLY has to do with tightening a BOLT or two like someone said above, I would rather get an applecare genius to do it then me.

Obviously yellow screen I agree, replace it, just like I did :)

Not worth the hassle to send back a replacement for a GOOD screen and a creaking noise if can be fixed easily ya know?

FYI, I have gone through 4 haswell 15'' rMBP's with samsung displays (purchased in groups of 2), and all had yellow tints in corners (mainly bottom left corner) and an overall yellow hue to the entire screen, of which I had to calibrate the white-point just to get it to look normal.

I just recently returned my last batch of 2 (almost about to give up), but decided to give it one more round. The last two that I took home were LG screens (SJE1) this time. BOTH have perfect whites and NO yellow tints in corners - completely uniform screens. Finally, perfect screens (for all practical uses). Did IR test and both passed 10 minutes of full brightness.

Might be that LG screens are the ones to be desired this time around.

Just my experience. Cheers.

Well, I've been following this thread since I ordered my 15" rmbp 16/512/2.6 750m online in late October. Thought I would add my experience to the growing list of quality control issues. My first laptop had a very slight yellow tinted strip just left of center that ran from top to bottom, otherwise no other coloring issues. However, in the yellow area there was a noticeable black smudge, almost like a permanent thumb print, that streaked from top-left of center to the top of the screen. The yellow tint was not enough to worry me but the smudge was constant and just couldn't deal with it for a $2500 laptop.

I initiated a return and received my replacement yesterday, it took only 4 days to get here, which was much faster than the first shipment which took a week, and they let me keep my first laptop until the new one got here because I needed it for lab these 2 weeks. I live in a city with no apple store and the nearest is over 250 miles away so my only option is online, I can't just go to the store to have them look at it. Unfortunately, the replacement shows considerable yellow tinting on the right side and lower corner, as well as yellowing in the bottom left corner. I will be returning this second one and will probably just get a refund and wait a month or two in hopes the issues get resolved.

This was my first experience with a mac, I have an iPad 2 which is built like a tank, it fell off my car in the middle of a busy intersection and got ran over multiple times, still flawless. I enjoyed so much about the laptop, it just saddens me that the issues seem so prevalent. I went with Apple because of the attention to quality and detail and seeing the abuse my iPad could endure, however I am beginning to wonder if quality is second place to profit in their mind. What set them apart has always been solid products that get the job done. Hopefully Apple will notice the many returns and get a hold on the situation.

Forgot to mention both my displays were samsung

I have been trying to relay the same message above the past week or so. I totally agree considering all the Samsung screens I have received had a yellowish tint. LG had a bluish/white tint and is much brighter.

A bit of a dilemma here. I got my mbp a few days ago and have been using it casually. With light browsing the display seems great and nothing seems wrong with it. I loaded up a blank white page and it seemed pretty uniform to me there as well.

However when I tried to do the checkerboard test to check for image retention, I noticed that the white checkerboards were distinctly whiter than the ones near the bottom corners. I wouldn't notice if I wasn't looking very closely but there was definitely a difference. The disparity diminishes once I turn the brightness up and in regular usage I see no problems but only on the checkerboard I can see that it is slightly less white.

So is there a way I can be sure my screen is yellow and not just my eyes playing tricks? And is it worth it to return the laptop and ask for a replacement for this level of yellow?

edit: Here is a picture comparing it to my old computer. The picture makes it look way more pronounced but there you go.
