I got my 4th unit today and this one has insane yellowing all at the bottom. Worse than all the others I received. This one is so bad that the launchpad icon in the dock isn't even silver it's gold.

Same areas affected, top 50% is perfect with zero problems. Bottom 50% starts to go yellow and around the bottom 30% of the display it's so yellow it's insane.

This was a machine straight from China. The 5th letter in the serial is Q. I don't know what that means but I know some have asked for it.

Needless to say I'm disappointed and I'm giving up. I've requested a refund and will be returning this system. It is obvious to me this problem is extremely widespread and my chances of getting a problem free unit are almost zero.

Thats really sad to hear, even I've got 4 replacements with creaking and yellow issues and decided to give up.

Was really thinking to try once more tomorrow and make a new order, but after hearing your case with serial Q. I am holding my money and wait for the new year and see what happens:eek:

I really want one, but I don't wanna play this lottery game...

so bad... 4 machines :(

I need a macbook pro for work, so I go to take the low base model 15inch, price $1850 (8gb ram I think is enough for me) and if comes yellow tint well I cant do anything like return it... so I sell later in one year when a new macbook pro comes and maybe the yellow tint issue was complete gone... cross my fingers!

I'm probably going to wait until they upgrade the screens again. Not because an upgraded screen will fix it but because I'm hoping any change to the screens might be a positive change.

So looks like I may be waiting for Broadwell or Skylake refreshes.

Good luck to everyone else. :)

Thinking exactly the same, but I think broadwell upgrade will happen after a year , maybe next oct 2014... It will be too much of a wait

It is a long time to wait I agree. But I'm not going to spend £2,824 / $4,500 USD on a laptop with a yellow screen and I'm not going to go through an infinite amount of replacements until I get a good one.

I'd rather stick that money back in my bank account and wait.

$4,500 USD  you need that high config? 1TB SSD etc..

Yes I do. And my country pays $1,000 more for the same config as Americans do. It is really insane how much more we pay for electronics in my country (United Kingdom).

I'd also rather stick the money back in my bank account and wait for what's next. :D

Only sad thing is my Haswell rMBP is actually quite good. I'm willing to take pictures but I already tried it once and my HTC One couldn't really show it well enough to be worth posting. Might try again, but my screen seems perfect with the exception that it's probably a little dim at max brightness. And it's been almost 2 weeks and still nothing bad. Launcher icon at the bottom looks perfectly silver, everything looks white from top to bottom, backlighting is perfectly even. To bad I'm going to return it Saturday.. I'm really going to miss owning a Mac :(

Btw, body is starting to creak more and more. It's was so noticeable when picking it up today... so at least there is something wrong lol

So you're pulling out? I think you are doing the right thing, but it's just awful that you can't get the machine you want due to faulty screens time and time again.

I'm waiting upon receipt of my 13", but it seems like there are hardly any issues with the 13" and that it's the 15" that has all the problems.

I really can't hold out any longer. But at least you have a fully capable Mac right now and can.

Quu, you've been outrageously unlucky.

Sorry to hear that. And I'm somewhat bummed that my "fresher batch" theory about serial numbers doesn't hold water.

I will, for the record, reaffirm that my first-and-only replacement turned out to be a good one, so there are definitely some good displays out there. But I understand your reluctance to keep playing this ridiculous exchange game.

Tough it out with your 17" and you'll at least be rewarded with a significantly faster machine in 2014. (Just keep your fingers crossed that display production standards have improved by then.)

For a skylake refresh, you're looking at early or mid 2015.

My third machine arrived today - and I have won the screen lottery. Perfect, uniform display, no yellowing.

Serial number production week is N, and it's a Samsung A01 screen. So there are good displays out there - it's just ridiculous that it took three machines to find one.

Yep I'm giving up. The odds seem too low to get a good one.

Quu, you've been outrageously unlucky.

Yep very unlucky. I'm bummed out too. For anyone wondering this is how it went for me:

LG - Yellowing in the bottom right
Samsung - Yellowing all over the bottom
Samsung - No Yellowing at first, later (4 days) yellow in bottom + shadowing
Samsung - Worst yellowing out of all three past machines, so yellow launchpad icon went from being Silver to Gold.

For a skylake refresh, you're looking at early or mid 2015.

I'm aware. I don't mind waiting. I got a brand new battery in my 17" a few months ago so I'm happy to hold out. I'll probably buy again after Broadwell though and not wait for Skylake. I don't really care about the architecture I just want one with a perfect screen. Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake; Doesn't matter to me.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I can't remember, but did Apple say they were going to check your screen?

It took me 5 replacements and swapping the screen from the 4th to the 5th to get a rMBP without issues. LOL So, I do not think that you are unlucky. Rather, I think the people who are getting good screens are the lucky ones.

They did say they would check it yes. They said that the last two times and to be fair the 1st one they said they'd check did look good until a few days later when it started to get that weird shadowing and the white point went crazy in the lower section of the display.

This one however is the worst screen I've ever seen. Not just out of the 3 prior Retina MacBook Pro's that I received but period out of all displays I've ever laid eyes on.

Week? is that month? What are the first 3 numbers in your serial? That'll let us know the factory it was made in, and what month. Maybe Apple IS paying attention and is trying to resolve the issue by the amount of returns.

----------

Maybe I'm crazy, but from the pic, I see the center is far brighter than the edges. I suggest doing an objective test.

I agree, edges not as bright like center

I recently returned a maxxed out 13'' for a 15''.

My 13'' (LG) screen was just perfect. Deep blacks and pure whites.

My 15'' (Samsung) screen is very uniform, but it's much more yellow than the LG.

I guess I could live with it but it does piss me off. And it pisses me off that I checked it in the store when I bought it and I didn't notice the yellow then and there. I was looking at evenness only, and then again colours per se are difficult to pick up in the chaos of a small store.

Colour calibration doesn't seem to be able to fix this.

I wonder if I should return it.

If you're posting about it, it's probably bad enough to be bothering you.
