This issue has just affected my MBP thats less than 1 Year old.

Specs: 15" MBP with Retina Display (Early 2013)
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

I just noticed it recently, and it only is visible when I have something that is black onscreen near the corners.

I'm a graphic designer, so any issues with my display is a lot larger of an issue than the average user.

My issue is that, like a complete moron, I did not invest in apple care.
I want to know if because my MBP is under a year old, am I covered by a standard apple warranty?

If I am, will they send my machine out for repair or just completely replace it?

Below are some pictures to show the severity of my issue:

The standard warranty covers the same stuff. The duration is different. People have suggested special treatment with applecare before, but there is no way to prove that. It's under a year, so you could always add applecare if you want to do so. It can be done anytime within the first year. Some third party retailers offer it at a better price, so look around. In either case, they would repair it. Regardless of your warranty, you can only get a replacement if it's within the exchange period. Under cases of chronic repair issues with the same machine, you may be able to request a replacement.

Cool spots near top of screen

I noticed that the entire screen is yellower than expected and I have a distinct 'cool' spot in the top 15% of the screen that is very noticeable when reading text while scrolling or when moving a window.

Saw the pictures above so tried my screen on all black and it doesn't look very black at all: attached pic exaggerates slightly.

Thoughts?

So I decided to go for screen lottery. I will bring back the 15'' to the store this monday and explain the situation.

But how do to go about it? 'I have a Samsung screen and it's yellow, and I want an LG one, which has pure white and less yellow tones'.

...and then maybe get a replacement that is another Samsung? They can't know which computer has which screen...

Honestly, I wonder if the best thing to do is to return it without an explanation and re-order via the online store.

Do you reckon that doing that, chances of getting a last-revision LG are better?

Just to point out, that I am not OCD, and that the screen brightness on my 15'' screen is absolutely even. But it's undeniable that the whole colour range is murky yellow. And no amount of calibration can help - I can get more faithful white, but then you lose in brightness and vibrancy.

Or you could just wait until the beginning of January (assuming you're still within the holiday return) and then exchange. The chances you'll get a better screen are better than right now.

Like to see proof of waiting would have some effect on a better screen. That is completely wishful thinking. There simply is no data to support this.

I must agree. History shows that this won't necessarily improve. I feel that if one wants a good screen, the only way to go about it is to get as many replacements as it takes... : /

Photo comparison of WHITE iphone vs YELLOW Samsung 2013 rMBP

Premise: don't focus on brightness level, but on white tone.

I will let the photos speak for themselves...

Oh my - how can anyone deal with the wait of ordering online and returning? I was exchanging in store, and even that was a waste of time.

given that the closest apple store is a 5 hour round trip drive, I can deal with the online order/return (my third MBPr comes Tuesday).

Mine has this issue in the bottom right corner of the display. I've already contacted Apple and I am replacing mine with another model.

Here is an illustration of how it appears on my display (Not this pronounced but the same position and gradient). http://i.imgur.com/eUsVWZO.png

EDIT:// Nevermind, Apple told me to do an SMC reset which has fixed the yellow tint completely. Now the display is uniformly white.

What is an SMC reset and how do you do it?

However keep in mind this only fixed the problem for me temporarily, it soon came back.

I find it puzzling that this fixed it at all. Once OSX is booted, it should have applied whatever standard color profile. Colors can shift while a display warms up, but it shouldn't have changed drastically after that. It's common to see changes over the first 30 minutes or so of use.

Thanks for your reply Quu. I've been scrolling through the entire thread reviewing your posts and skipping over everyone else's. I was desperate to find a happy ending to your yellow screen saga and I finally found it in post #799.

Sadly no happy ending ever came. I ended up returning all four units I received for a refund. Apple is unable to make these laptops reliably and I was not prepared to exchange forever.

Maybe it was just due to the notebook being cold when I initially applied it. The laptop had been switched off for a few minutes before doing it by Apples instruction but the yellowing quickly returned during normal use.

Just wanted to share my yellow screen experience.

I bought a 13" Haswell rMBP with 8GB Ram and 256GB SSD. I wouldn't say the screen was yellow, but it was pretty warm, much warmer than my iPad Air and iPhone 5S. I generally like a slightly warmer display but this was a little more than what I usually prefer. Also the bottom right corner of the display was yellow. It was not a huge area but it was noticeable if you looked for it. I would have kept it but my real issue was the lid arrived scratched and also had a small knick on the edge, which bothered me.

I exchanged it and the replacement was perfect on the outside, but the screen was VERY yellow and uneven. The top of the display was very cool, but half way down it became yellow. It was very noticeable with anything white or grey. If you had two finder windows opened one at the top would be blue/grey and then one at the bottom would be beige. I was kicking myself for returning my last one because even though the original one I received was warm, it was more even (except for the bottom corner). I tried for 24 hours to get used to it and I was beyond frustrated with it, and decided to return it again.

The third unit I received is perfect. There are no marks on the outside, and the screen is neither warm or cool. Its very neutral and even. I've run all the stuck pixel and screen yellow tests on it and it seems fine. I really didn't want to get into a return cycle but for the amount I spent, I wanted to be happy. I am now.

Just so that everyone is aware, the N, O, P, Q applies only to Samsung screens. If you have a letter that is much earlier in the alphabet, like C or D, chances are it is an LG screen. It does not mean it was made super early and is likely to have problems. The best way to check if yours was made later is to simply check App store updates when you first boot to see whether you need an EFI firmware update. If you do, you most likely have an earlier batch.

Ah yes, I see that now. Apparently I didn't read far enough into the thread. Four units all defective is mind boggling.

Starfyre, you are wrong...

I have an N model# with an LG display.

I can tell you from personal experience and provide photographic evidence that it's not always true that the Samsungs are yellow and the LGs are white: I've seen white Samsungs and now I'm on a yellow LG.

I've returned my yellow Sammy and called Apple sales to ask if there is any way of ordering a laptop online that has an LG screen.

As expected the answer is no.

But the interesting thing is that the sales assistant told me that standard configurations ship from the UK (I guess that applies to US as well?), whereas BTO ship from china.

If those coming from the factory are the latest to have been produced, they could be a safer bet at the moment.

Unfortunately mine is a standard configuration... fingers crossed!

Also, at the store today I've run the terminal string on most 15'' they had on display, and can confirm they were all samsung...
