In some ways OS X Yosemite reminds me of Classic Mac OS. We've been seeing a gradual trend back towards it since Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. Which isn't a bad thing IMO.
Here are some interesting concepts of how apps could see :

I hope Skype gets a new look
I'm using the Public Beta, and couldn't help but notice that, with all the beautiful changes, the System Preferences icons are largely unchanged. The one I most want to see updated before final release is Desktop & Screen Saver. Seriously, who's still using the purple Leopard desktop? Even Leopard users must be sick of seeing it by now.
Yosemite reminds me of a corpse. Lifeless dull look.
the only problem with dark mode is the third party toolbar icons like 1password or clamxav they don't change colour when dark mode gets enabled, developers need to find a way to change their app toolbar icon according to dark mode or light mode
Agreed, System Preferences looks really messy.I hope those change too. System preferences just doesn't look right.

It's nice how the two always seem to want to stay right next to each other...
Thanks for stating the obvious.Still a beta. They are still working on it.

I really like the UI changes in Yosemite...the only thing I can gripe about so far is the lack of focus on the active window...if you have multiple windows opened, they all kinda blend together. I would like to see lighter, or more translucent, inactive windows...or a darker active window.
Also, I'm still wondering when they'll update the clocks in the NC to match the intended design shown at WWDC... AFAIK it still doesn't look like this in the latest DP.

The inactive windows have the translucency effects disabled (after all, translucency is about pointing out which elements are on top) and they also drop lighter shadow, in addition to lighter shading. Do you think that these cues are not enough?
Apple fixed the washed-out icons bug in Dark Mode you mentioned earlier (see screen shot). Text rendering still seems off though when using a dark menu bar and Dock. More pixelated and many letters look cut off at the bottom.Right, I am not using a retina screen, and so what I see is a regression beyond belief.
Jobs once famously said in an interview that Windows was tasteless, but what we see here is not just tasteless, it is butt ugly and so below common standards that it should be plain illegal to cram out such crap.
