I get that there are people that haven't ever pirated anything in their lives. They do exist, without a doubt. They generally fall into 1 of 2 categories:

1) Don't know how to pirate anything, at least not safely (worried about trojans, worms, etc.). I understand these people. I'm related to several of them, and I regularly fix their PCs with a re-install of Windows XP Lite or Windows 7-Lite, written by hacker/pirates and available on your favorite torrent site.

2) Taking an actual moral stance against pirating anything, anywhere, anytime, for any reason.

The people in category (2) I don't really understand. It seems almost like following a religion - they do it without really understanding why they're doing it or the deeper implications behind their stance. After all, the companies that they so eagerly defend in their stance don't follow anywhere near the same moral code as they do. They've essentially allowed those music/movie/software companies to dictate to them what their moral code SHOULD be when it coming to sharing 0's and 1's, rather than what would actually make sense.

You don't understand people who do not wish to steal?

Just installed 10.8 GM on my rMBP and scrolling in Safari is smooth as glass now. In Lion I had a small but noticeable amount of lag; that's totally gone now.

They're using Core Animation now to handle scrolling so it should be totally slick.

I find it more interesting that the known issues listed earlier in the thread started of with In this developer preview. They wouldn't do that for a GM.

I think the person that posted what he thought was release notes for the GM actually was reading the release notes for the previous seed.

Folks on the dev forums don't see any release notes either.

If one were to install this onto their MacBook Air without having a developer account would it still work? Or do you need you MacBook registered like you need your iPhone's udid registered for iOS betas?

Just rebooted with GM build.

First thing I noticed: loaded all normal app's used, and iStat reports 24% RAM compared to the usual 38-40% previously.

This is with Mail, Calendar, Safari, iTunes, EyeTV, Spotify, 1Password, DropBox, VLC Streamer, Growl 1.4, TotalSpaces, GeekTool and iStat Menus running.

Quite a difference.

Thank you for posting something worth reading.

Nice. But I think I'll upgrade a week or two after the initial public release and see if there are major bugs reported in 10.8.0. If there are, I might wait until 10.8.1.

It's illegal because the only people who are legally allowed to download the software are the ones who pay Apple for development privileges.

Company policy is NOT law... and before you download it, you are unlikely to have already read the license anyway.

I'm really glad they took time to optimize the system instead of just adding gimmicks like they did with Lion. They were able to make the system better like Snow Leopard, but were still able to add in new features. This is what Lion should have been. OS X Mountain Lion for life! :apple:

Thanks, glad I could give some info that helps a little.

This may be a placebo effect, but I've noticed a big difference in overall speed of standard app's. Example, "System Preferences" loads and switches between various preferences so quickly I barely catch it change. App's load much faster, even on 32GB's RAM and a SSD.

Anyone else notice?

And d**n, I just used my trackpad to three finger tap on a word for definitions which was always hit or miss. It worked, and hella fast! Also, I zoomed in on this dialog box in Safari, and the fonts are crazy smooth! The graphics around are blurry, but this is definitely different.

Just noticed OpenGL Core Apple support fails for 4.0+ :(

I guess it doesn't matter, I don't think everyone and their mother is going to get it anyway. It isn't like if you typed out "Windows 7 download" and then the first Google page would be torrents.

Why do people always bother posting to the effect of, "yeah, I think I'll hold off a while and see if there are any bugs. Maybe I'll install it in a few weeks".

Who cares?

You don't understand people who do not wish to steal?

You're EXACTLY the kind of misinformed consumer that I'm talking about.

Stealing, in the eyes of the law, is depriving actual physical property from someone else. In the case of the GM that's out now, I couldn't buy it if I wanted to. Downloading it, in the eyes of the law, is not stealing.

You probably aren't even aware that of the miniscule few that have been taken to court for piracy, the charges are DISTRIBUTING copyrighted material, which is, technically, a crime. Of course, the media companies wrote the overreaching laws that made "criminals" out of some people that, to me, are far less guilty of any wrong than the criminals buying our Congressmen off in order to write those laws. Educate yourself before you spout off.

Or just keep nodding your head and being a good little consumer.

More like "for lack of a graphics card".

The real world impact of Moore's law has really lessened in the past few years. Unless you are a gamer or videographer, the impact of Core i7s just isn't apparent for the vast majority of web/email/office users. Apple is a hardware company, so they have to do *something* to get you to upgrade.

Yes but for a $1299 computer I would expect it to be able to run the latest software for at least another year or so. It was only able to go through 3 different OS: Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion. Where as in the 90's and early 2000's the iMac G3 was able to be upgraded all the way through OS 8.6 or 9 to either 10.3 or 10.4. It just makes no sense that Apple is abandoning hardware so soon now.

Did I just discover something?

/snip

Don't think so unfortunately. 17th July is the stock date that the iCal (or Calendar as it's now called) uses. Also, it says Monday in the top right hand corner. Monday 17th July does not occur this year, 17th is a Tuesday.

'fraid to say I think it's just a mockup and nothing else.

So... is it any faster than Lion and does the OS still hold inactive memory in a death grip?

Exciting news, but I am not gonna be able to upgrade until I can confirm that all the Macports I am using work. I ran into this problem with Lion, first week a bunch of things I use flat out didn't work.
