You need to choose one and install it.
Pikify partly prepares the OS, but does not include the Boot64 nor CapitanPikeFix.

Hello EGIprime,

El Capitan on MacPro 1,1 (or 2,1) does not "like" to your system shut down and was rebootedork with 512Mb memory cards. Many users have reported system instability and random crashes. In all cases we have advised the removal of the 512Mb memory sticks.

You should also purchase some higher capacity memory sticks. The benefits of more memory with El Capitan are considerable.

Those users who have taken this advice always report back that their system has stabilised.

Thanks for the help. We had (2) 512 sticks in the machine the remaining are 1gb sticks for a total of 4gb. I took out the 512's but we still get random crash / reboots the system will not launch some apps period and it just reboots.

The screen goes black then about 2-3 minutes later a grey blank screen reappears and it says your system was shut down and rebooted.

Should I downgrade to Yosemite or does this sound like a RAM issue?
Question: Which boot.efi do you install for Yosemite the most current one thats on Piker's page? http://piker-alpha.github.io/macosxbootloader/

Thanks for your suggestions and advice!

[doublepost=1475443856][/doublepost]quick update apparently with only the el cap drive in for some reason i see a flashing folder with the question mark

I removed all of my memory from my Mac Pro 1,1 (El Capitan 10.11.6), except 2 x 2 GB DIMMS located in the upper riser card. After a restart, I loaded a few Safari web pages and waited for the inevitable... The Mac Pro crashed then restarted, similarly as you reported earlier. I then shut down the Mac Pro and installed 2 x 1 GB DIMMS into the lower riser card (6 GB total memory, see attached jpg) and restarted... The Mac Pro is stable for now after a few minutes of operation. I would speculate that you need additional memory in your Mac Pro. I would suggest as a minimum that you add another 4 GB and you should be fine.

As for a downgrade to Yosemite... My understanding is that the boot.efi v3.1 will work fine with Yosemite.

Going from 10.11.5 --> 10.11.6 no boot files will be replaced, ANY other version lower they WILL be replaced.

ah im fixing to try yosemite because for some reason i can not get el capitan to boot for the life of me. idk what is the deal it worked in the past lol. copied both the boot files over to proper locations nothing happens when i reboot to it. shows up in startup disk on lion but if i unplug the lion drive it just does the whole flashing folder thing.
[doublepost=1475456884][/doublepost]not sure how it would be on an already existing installation though

Just wanted to report one more success with a flashed 2,1 Mac Pro with 12gb of OWC memory!

Installed 10.11.3 with an already pikified install media I had (3.1v8), then installed Boot64 and upgraded to 10.11.6 and all current system updates.

I saw this type of lag a while back. It turned out to be a failing hard drive.

The TRIM function may be relevant. Here's an external discussion and it includes the command to enable TRIM
http://www.howtogeek.com/222077/how-to-enable-trim-for-third-party-ssds-on-mac-os-x/

Thanks for the pointer, using "trimforce" to enable TRIM on my Crucial 255GB drive seems to have solved the performance problem! Wow I'm still amazed at how well these machines are holding up :). That just made my day! Thanks again!!:D

Cheers,

Azi

Hey all...
Thanks to all of your help I upgraded my 1,1 (hardware and software) to run El Cap. Unfortunately my work got real busy after that and I haven't had the time to get it past 10.11.3 beta (15D9c). So now I have two questions for your collective wisdom...

1. What's the best way from where I am to get to 10.11.6 (from what I've been observing this seems like the latest?)

2. Is there any point/hope of installing Sierra or will El Cap be the final version?

Thanks for your help (in the past and now)
Mike

1. Just did that recently. I used Boot64 available on this post: 2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X El Capitan right after successfully installing 10.11.3, then used the App Store to upgrade normally. Worked perfectly fine.

2. I would say yes. But a lot of it depends on the collective work of some amazing guys in the community like the OP which mostly do it on their free time, so let's give them a break :) It should definitely be possible technically, though.

Don't hold your breath for Sierra.
We have El Capitan working well. Move to this, my personal opinion is that it is well worth it. El C will still get updates for another year or so....

Sierra is highly unlikely. (Never say never, but at the moment it looks like El C is as far as we go)

So I have done a clean install with Piker Alpha's 3.1 boot.efi and have the same issue streaming from my itunes library to new apple TV. After 30 seconds or so, the computer restarts. Here is the crash data from when the computer reboots. I don't know if there is anything meaningful here:

Hello fortiusfidelius,

Try re-ordering your Memory cards. On Riser A you have a pair of 1G in slots 1 & 2, and a pair of 4G in slots 3 & 4. Try putting the 4G pair first (in slots 1 & 2).

If that doesn't help, I noticed you have three 3rd party kernel extensions, Soundflower, WebrootSecureAnywhere, and Nvidia. The Nvidia extensions will be okay since these are for your graphics card. The other two though, do you really need them? I'd recommend uninstalling/deleting the Soundflower extension, this is audio, and unless you've kept it up to date is probably quite old (I used to have Soundflower installed ages ago, it helped with optical audio connections and 5.1 surround sound. I'm now using HDMI connectivity and surround sound works great with no additions).
You could also try to remove the Webroot extension. If you need that for a particular purpose, then temporarily remove it, test, then put it back.

If none of that helps, then you could be looking at replacing the 1G memory cards too.
As a final test, remove all your 1G memory sticks, and test for a while just using your 4G sticks (8G will be fine). If you try this, please do report back. I've got my suspicions that the 1G sticks may suffer the same incompatibility as the 512MB sticks.....

So I was working fine on 10.11.x, and yesterday I did the auto update via the App Store to 10.11.16 on my Mac Pro 1,1. Now it refuses to boot into 10.11.16 and always reverts to 10.7.

I've tried changing boot.efi and PlatformSupport.plist but nothing is working.

PLEASE HELP!

For those who don't care about SIP.
Disable it before installing the package.
Packages contain boot.efi v3.1 DL'd from Pike's website and updated launch daemon.
Click "Install anyway". Rest is the same as with PikeYoseFix.
Report back if it does work for you.

With deep bow to Pike.

After you replace the boot.efi files, but before you reboot, go into System Preferences: Startup Disk, select the El Capitan volume there, then reboot

Thanks for the info I have tried that, when I select 10.11 as my startup disk in 1.7.5 preferences, then click restart it reboots but goes straight into 10.7 again :(

Try a PRAM reset
Try holding the ALT key after the chime. Select the drive from the chooser.

If it still isn't working double check the boot.efi files. It's best to use the Terminal. Use a long listing
Code:
cd /Volumes/<your_el_capitan_volume_name/System/Library/CoreServices
ls -l boot.efi
cd /Volumes/<your_el_capitan_volume_name/usr/standalone/i386
ls -l boot.efi

Or use disk usage in human readable format
Code:
du -h boot.efi

The file size of Pike boot.efi files is around 312kb, the Apple boot.efi files are around twice that size 600kb+.

Months ago, i have installed El Capitan on my Mac Pro without problems, but today i have changed HDD and it seems to be a problem. I can't get further then initial white logo on black screen and progress bar running from relatively fast to super slow. I was waiting about 4 hours, but nothing happened. I have still the same installmedia on USB Disk, Machine is the same configuration. Before everything worked, but now....

Try a verbose boot...
Reboot, when you hear the chime hold down Apple V

It will show the boot sequence and text logging. It should give you some idea what's going on...

P.s. Is the new disk a clone of the old disk, or did you use the installer and then the Migration Assistant?

rthpjm,
You are a genius, I'm not sure why but I had downloaded and changed the boot.efi to the Pike version, but the file size was back up to 605KB, I did not know about the usr/standalone one and changed both again, then rebooted and its all working fine again.

Thanks again your help is greatly appreciated!
